I’ll top and tail the decade:

Also sort of agree the most innovative period was from the late eighties till about 94-95.

Speaking of Cathro he could do videos (#content) with Pete Scullion. Now I’m not saying he should dress in a schoolboys outfit with red hat…….but it would be fandabidozi like!

Look on ebay etc and ask yourself why there are so many hardly used (warranty replacements) for sale.

The performance and tunability of Monarch shocks is good while they are working! The design was changed for SRAMs newer shocks, with more bushing overlap to account for damage caused by side loading, which the older shocks couldn’t handle at all well.

Whilst SRAM blame frame manufactures for poor tolerances/design or the customer for poor installation of the hardware. Bear in mind shocks from other manufactures are able to not scratch themselves to bits or develop knocks internally in the same applications as Monarchs do!

an LBS can’t possibly know more than they do, so they don’t go in. Not really an issue

There’s a hardcore who treat it as a sport, talking down to the lesser educated, in a professional environment, where they are unlikely to get punched on the nose!

Yup classic arsehole behaviour that makes most small business owners despise their customers and charge top wack for everything, doing zero favours for anyone!

I’m afraid the arsehole factor in running any public facing business in the UK is a big problem.

Imagine owning an LBS dealing with the worst STW argumentative pedants, you’d end up escorting them off your premises and permanently banning them.

Wasn’t expecting to become a fan of X Fusion forks (Sweep HLR) but I am pleasantly surprised for the money I paid! I’ve seen amongst other owners (albeit a few compared to SRAM/RS), is they seem to be pretty robust and reliable with minimal servicing.

Good compromise of small bump compliance without diving and big hit handling without losing the small bump compliance. On the downside they are without doubt the noisiest forks on the rebound stroke I’ve ever had, adjusting air volume is old-school and some of the graphics are a bit austere!

I’m a long way off needing a service but will take notes from this thread.

I can ride bikes down to about 410-420 reach before it feels really cramped. Even then I couldn’t use the shortest stems and the seat would be pushed back on the rails.

Depends what you’re used to and how long your arms and upper torso are I suppose.

65 HA isn’t bad so would help it feel a bit less terrifying when steep.

    Yeah that old ruse.

Make sure you put plenty of blue thread lock on and importantly let it cure before riding! Those bolts are notorious for backing out!

Edit: That means you’ll also have to chase out (use a pick/tap whatever) any of the old dried stuff out of the threads in the frame (if there is any) so it bonds properly.

Think the Bfe is more popular purely because of the price

Sums it up. There’s only so much people are prepared to pay for less capable hardtails.

In fact I’ll put myself forward as a Tsar or Commandant of such institutions.

I don’t necessarily think it’s their fault (obviously not the dogs they’re animals). It’s a shame they need professional help, preferably long term residential, in an institution capable of dealing with their issues.

Trail sabotage appears (based upon evidence available) to be predominately carried out by old dog owners.

Edit: I would assume but don’t know for sure that they live locally to the trails they sabotage

Fox/Rockshox et al may not make stuff themselves, but they do employ busy R&D departments making and testing prototypes before they’re sent for manufacture in he far east.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the castings were manufactured at one place and the dampers and damper assembly is done elsewhere in order to retain a competitive advantage and prevent IP being ripped off before a product is even released.

Most trail saboteurs are ruddy faced gammon dog owners including the ones who have been caught both here and abroad, correct me if I’m wrong.

Go and do some research and prove me wrong.

I’ve been SRAM free for a while now.

Some of their gear Reverbs, Monarchs (more bushing overlap in the new designs), creaky CSU Pikes, Lyrik dampers leaking oil, blown dampers, some Eagle mechs self-destructing, GXP BB’s and going further back Avid brakes.

Some neck that using the buying public like beta testers and charging top dollar in the aftermarket.

How they don’t get hammered in the biking press I don’t know. The amount of problems people have had across all their product ranges!

Edit: Almost forgot that wooden feel you used to get from dry forks from the factory.

Don’t RST and Suntour make forks for other brands?

Just noticed RST have a 38mm stanchion fork, don’t know if they’re any good like!
