I always liked John McCain.
John McCain passes intelligence report to FBI – Gruaniad linkConducted himself with dignity when he lost to Obama in 2008.
From 2008: McCain corrects woman calling Obama an “arab”Hopefully he’ll spend the rest of his term blocking Trump
cheshirecatFree MemberHad my knee serviced via arthroscopy about 15 years ago. They thought it was a meniscus tear but found it was just debris when they went it. Bit of a clean up, some follow-up steroid injections and was back driving within a few days.
Still running and cycling happily on it :-)
cheshirecatFree MemberWas in a hotel recently. Clearing the windscreen before breakfast. Guy next to me starts his car and walked back in (BMW M3, so a hell of a lot of cash to lose). Ended up sitting next to him at breakfast.
Thought about moving his car to a difference space, but being British, I just mentally told him off.
cheshirecatFree MemberSports Pursuit had the Helly Hansen merino/polypropylene tops cheap a while ago (I bought three, and they’re my go-to base layer this time of year). Worth a look.
cheshirecatFree MemberI suspect most parents (including us) have had that “Oh shit! What if?” moment. Good for the parents (despite the inevitable abuse) sharing this video to encourage people to secure furniture. From the BBC story:
“Parents Kayli and Ricky, from Utah in the United States, were hesitant to share the video, but did so in order to spread awareness about the importance of bolting down furniture.”
cheshirecatFree MemberThe MiL has drunk an entire bottle of wine for the second night in a row, and is singing badly…..again
I’ll be hiding out in the home office this evening, and the kitchen tomorrow. Pity I can’t get out for a run tomorrow, as I have for the last two days. On the plus side, them being here is doing wonders for my fitness :-)
cheshirecatFree MemberLike others I always thought I’d been too savvy to have had PPI, but with the window starting to close, I popped in a complaint with Barclaycard (also had Egg and Goldfish over the years, so now same company). Turns out that I also hadn’t “unticked a box” 24 years ago.
Took about 10 minutes to fill in the online form, and a £2700 cheque landed on my doormat this week.
cheshirecatFree MemberNo idea about the original question, but my FR235 gets used almost every day. It’s a great watch, and they seem to be fixing some of the niggles with fairly frequent firmware updates.
cheshirecatFree MemberI have SRAM Road hydros (my first road discs). I’ve been riding on them since August and they’re great, no issues.
I also quite like the hoods. Nice and chunky to hold onto.
cheshirecatFree MemberFor me, the line diagram showed where to apply the Veet and plaster. All provided by the clinic in advance.
cheshirecatFree MemberIn the spirit of recommending what you have, a Motorola G4 (though I did research this, so it counts).
16GB storage, but you can configure a (fast) micro SD card as internal memory. Got a 64GB card in there, so currently have 70GB available after all the Android gubbins. Think it will take up to a 128GB card.
Only irritation is that it’s fairly big (5.5″) and no NFC, so no Android pay.
cheshirecatFree MemberI’ve had a Forerunner 220 and now have a 235. Has run, bike, indoor modes and optical heart rate. I’d recommend it – use it most days.
The Forerunner 35 also looks good. Lot less money, but with optical heart rate too. Vivoactive HR also looks good.
cheshirecatFree MemberI’m on android 6 here – and on Moto G can use the memory card as internal memory. I have 40gb internal now.
Thanks for this – just bought a Moto G4 a couple of days ago. Just configured a 64GB card as internal memory, and hey presto, a 70GB plus internal memory phone.
If it stops working or something goes wrong i’ll just stump up the £150 for a Moto G4 in 16GB for her.
Just got one of these, very impressed so far. Screen resolution is indistinguishable from my work Samsung S6 Edge, but the camera in low light is somewhat worse. £150 is a bargain.
cheshirecatFree MemberLooked at the Discovery a few years ago (and XC90s), but was put off by people on campsites telling me about the £1000 bills every year or so, mainly for air suspension components it seemed. Ended up with a Hyundai Santa Fe, which was totally reliable and did 90% of what the Disco did (albeit rather plasticky), and also had 7 seats. Was so good, we recently bought another, but with the 200bhp 2.2l engine. Reliable so far (kiss of death, I know).
cheshirecatFree MemberAuto for me for most of the last 20 years. I prefer it, especially on a diesel, but wouldn’t presume to tell anyone that it’s better.
how do folk who regularly jump from auto to manual car and back find it ? This will be my situation when new car arrives next year and wife still has a manual…
Swap between my auto and the wife’s manual a few times per week. It’s fine.
cheshirecatFree MemberHad one of these in my 20s as a company car – Mitsubishi Galant 2.5l V6. A very discreetly quick car for the time. I’d have something similar again.
cheshirecatFree MemberEr… definately not my first car. Chevette in snot green and rust
Second car…maybe :-)
Neither pics are of mine

cheshirecatFree MemberLooks like £4000 will get you a 2006/7 Hyundai Santa Fe with 100k miles and the 150bhp 2.2ltr diesel engine. We had one of these, and whilst it’s not as good as the current 200bhp 2.2, it’s not bad at all. Boot is very large, and as a bonus, it has a proper spare wheel too. Never broke down whilst we had it (up to 100k miles)
4WD is standard, and whilst not a Land Rover, it seemed fine on snow and mud.
cheshirecatFree MemberHalo liquid works for me on running gear that been left in a suitcase for a week in a plastic bag after use. Sainsburys stock it.
cheshirecatFree MemberIt/you won’t need it.
I suspect it’ll outlast me – easily. It can be my legacy to my kids :-)
cheshirecatFree MemberGot a Karrimor Jaguar rucksack from the late ’80s. Just as good as it ever was, and my son is now using it for his DofE expeditions. Suspect Karrimor will no longer honour the lifetime warranty though :-(
cheshirecatFree MemberTwo here, aged 17 and 15. Happy with that, and love them to bits. Wife would have carried on to 3… or 4 etc.
What’s becoming increasing obvious is that they’re each others’ best friend. I suspect they’ll always be close.
cheshirecatFree Member100% for 6 months, 65% after that. Company provided disability insurance.
In 17 years, had one day off sick (very lucky). Work from home, so no-one to infect when I have a cough/cold (agree with the poster above about infecting colleagues)cheshirecatFree MemberJohn Menzies (edit – beaten to it!)
Martin’s newsagents?
Still a couple round here
cheshirecatFree MemberWas wandering down the Strand on the way to an afternoon meeting (after a pleasant relaxed lunch with a friend). Spotted my fellow attendees walking the other way, and queried where they were going. Turns out the meeting was in the morning (to be fair, all the previous ones had been afternoon).
cheshirecatFree MemberNot a particular make of car, but the older drivers round here (yes I know I’m also getting old) are especially dangerous. They don’t drive fast, but seem to have no appreciation for what they need to do to pass a cyclist. No variation in speed or direction = a very close pass.
Shouted at one the other day – fixed stare forwards. His female passenger looked suitably embarrassed.
cheshirecatFree MemberWe’ve had great care on the NHS, especially during the birth of my daughter, when it seemed there was a motorway running through the room, full of consultants, midwives etc. She’s 17 now, and I’m reasonably convinced that she wouldn’t be the person she is but for the care we received. During my son’s birth, he was fine, but my wife wouldn’t stop bleeding. Cue a worrying couple of hours holding a newborn baby whilst his mother was in theatre.
For a little bit of balance, we’ve also had excellent care on the reciprocal French system whilst on holiday.
cheshirecatFree MemberIt’s designed for trailers. By law there needs to be an indication that the indicators are working, so buzzer (aftermarket kits and older cars), or light (newer cars with integrated electrics).
It’ll be a black box hidden somewhere behind a panel. Mine is behind a panel in the boot where I access the rear bulbs – depends on the installer though.
cheshirecatFree MemberMy experience with a dodgy knee.
Referral from GP to specialist.
MRI scan to diagnose the issue (kneecap not tracking)
Referral from specialist to physio with knee expertise
3-4 physio sessions (guy knew his knees)
Keep up the exercises he/she gives you to realign the knee (this is important – I’ve lapsed, and I can feel the knee issue coming back. Have restarted exercises)Company provided private healthcare, so all relatively quick.
cheshirecatFree MemberAsk your local cycling/running/triathlon club for recommendations?
cheshirecatFree MemberKids have been through two Islabikes – great bikes which have stood up really well to being abused, dropped, scraped etc. Kids described them as “fast” compared to other bikes. Resale value is very good, though I let one go for a fairly knock-down price a year or two ago. Buyer passed it on for the same price, and subsequent buyer has promised to do likewise (which was nice I thought). As above, there’s a very active used buy/sell group on Facebook.
Mate has a couple of Frogs for his kids – seem like great bikes too.
cheshirecatFree MemberLong time ago for us (17 and 15 years old now), but still remember the sleepless nights and colic, especially with child #2.
Just wanted to say that there’s some great advice here. All the best to you, your GF and son.
cheshirecatFree MemberYou have to wonder how long it will be until you can pay for a private GP service where you can just Skype or Facetime them.
Already here. Part of my (work provided) healthcare with Vitality. Not used it though.
From the messages above it seems really patchy, and strongly depends where you live. No long waits here, generally same or next day.
cheshirecatFree MemberI use Adidas Climalite or Kalenji (Decathlon) running t-shirts which are both wicking materials but once they are wet with sweat they are on a losing battle. They will often dry out within minutes of finishing a run.
These are the kinds of running tops I use, so nothing to change there. Tape ’em up!!
cheshirecatFree MemberOnly time I’ve ever had this was when I wore a cotton t-shirt – never again. Nothing else to add as using proper running t-shirts stopped this 100%
Mate has this – last 2 half marathons I have done with him he has worn a white top and ended the race with 2 large red circles on his shirt, not a good look.
Saw this at the (rather warm) Liverpool half. Ouch!
cheshirecatFree MemberI also have these brakes, and was similarly confused. The tech doc makes it fairly clear now I think:
The spares I have are F03C, but I think the old G01A I have for my Deores will also fit.
cheshirecatFree MemberFrequent traveller here.
The standard card I use for travelling abroad is the Halifax Clarity – no loading fees. Backup card is a Santander Zero (which I don’t think is still available).
However, I do have an AMEX card tucked away, mainly because it once paid a restaurant bill for around 20 of us in France – nobody’s Visa or Mastercard would work. I can only conclude that the payment system is different, so worth having (for me) as a backup of a backup..
