Looks purposeful. In fact, that back end looks brutal. How does it ride?
Surely there’s no way there’s 120mm of stanchion showing on those forks

I’d get the classic ‘cos it looks nicerer :D

I’ve never been interested in riding at Mayhem before but this thread’s made me want to do it. Think I’ll go and get my wiring checked

Fairly big, fairly chunky, good grip. Got one on the back. I’m sure it would be good on the front too. I rate it as an all-rounder, riding in the Surrey hills

Surely you’d need to pick up a biggish piece of root on your tyre and then dump it somewhere else to spread the stuff?

Doesn’t sound very likely to me (especially on thin CX tyres) but I’m happy to be contradicted by someone who knows what they’re talking about :-)

I have an Inbred. It’s very good and incredible value. Slot dropouts just work. I’d like to try a Sanderson but isit easy to adjust that BB? Doesn’t it need a special tool?

Agree with Chucker that this conversation would be a lot more constructive face to face over a cuppa. Is ‘t riding bikes great, by the way

Yes, you’re right. It’s exactly the same. I’ve been a fool.

I understand some of you are feeling defensive. You’ve done something silly and now you’re feeling a bit confused and guilty. It’s quite natural to lash out under the circumstances but don’t worry, it gets much easier to deal with your emotions when you grow up

Zesty would be a closer match to the Stumpy and would be a better bet for the riding he’s doing. Either bike would be fine. He should pick the one he likes best

As I said before, I’m all for pushing the boundaries but you have to do it responsibly. This event has zero chance of improving access for biking. Quite the reverse.

    @ Freeride Nick

Next time you mince your way down Northern Monkey or ride round the jumps on flytipper just remember who built these trails….he has virtually single handedly made what Surrey Hills riding is today. aggravated more landowners than any other mountain biker in the SE.
Oh I forgot, you all stay on rights of way the whole time..

Funny how some people equate “radness” with a right to do whatever the hell they like

Splash of water if it’s really muddy, wipe clean with a soft rag. Done.
Never use stanchion lube, don’t see the point. Just keep lube topped up in the lowers where it’s needed.

I’ve had this when using a non-standard adapter. Solved by using a different one. I’ve also had rotors which looked fine but obviously had a minute high spot which would bind every revolution. My money’s on the adapter, though

Go singlespeed . It will be properly light. You’ll love it

I bought the wheelpro book. It’s excellent. I made a nipple driver out of a screwdriver that came in a cracker. If you buy a really cheap screwdriver they’re easy to bend and file into shape. Also made the wheelpro truing stand and dishing gauge. Not difficult just took a few hours and very rewarding. Really handy for truing up wheels, replacing rims or building up whole new wheels. None of it’s hard, you just need to be methodical and take your time

I can see how this started off as a nice idea – a few mates having a very informal race on the quiet. Very slightly irresponsible but hey, as long as everyone’s sensible and considerate, lots of fun and no harm done.

Then it gets popular, numbers rise, race numbers get printed, it gets plastered all over the web and it’s bad news for all of us.

I’m all for pushing the boundaries on the access and trail building front but you’ve got to do it responsibly or you lose the moral high ground. That’s bad for the cause, but more importantly it makes you a selfish twunt.

Racing your mates for fun in a small group is a million miles from racing at an ‘event’ , no matter how informal. Next year expect 200+ riders and some proper trouble.

If you’re happy to do the build yourself then yes, why not? If you’re paying someone else to build it up then you may find it’s cheaper to buy a whole new wheel.

Is that a Hope hub? If it is it would be worth sending back to them. They’re very helpful and it might save you a few quid

I’ve found previous models of XT hubs not all that tough. Have bent axles and destroyed freehubs without trying too hard

Just grind 3mm off the non-drive side of the BB shell. It’s only a cheap frame

Don’t know if you’ve considered singlespeed but it’s a great way to build up a light bike on the cheap. Get a slot dropout inbred and you can try it singlespeed and, if you hate it, bung gears on later. As said above, don’t get too hung up on frame weight. I have an SS Inbred with Exotic forks and it’s properly quick

What about a STW mass naked trespass to demand Scottish-style access rights? Brings a new meaning to cheeky trails…

Nice. Glad I can’t afford one of these – deciding whether to go for old-fashioned skinny beauty or fat-tubed dropper-friendliness would almost certainly drive me bonkers :?

I’ve got several sets of Stroker Trail’s. Cheap because they’ve never been fashionable and don’t look all that pretty but perform superbly. Bleeding’s not the easiest but not too tricky. Prob not what the OP is after though, I’d guess

A little bit of grease will help them go in and should make them easier to get out again when the time comes

I have a C456. It’s bombproof, light, comfy, versatile, cheap and I actually like the look of mine (stealth black). Personally, I’d find it hard to justify spending more on an all-round steel frame for any reason other than looks, which is of course a perfectly valid reason

To make the most of the downs in the Alps you’ll want something with a fair amount of travel and stiffness (not an XC focused full suss). However, if it’s more about the climbs then that would probably be ideal
