Why on earth would you not want discs? Genuine question

Try Kaesae on here (Katec bearings on EBay I think). I got bearings for my 2005 Stumpy from him for a reasonable price and they seem good

    Anyone ghettoed them on 317s?

I reckon 872 on the bars and Lumenator on the head would be hard to beat

Hmmmm. I use an XML torch on my lid with an 872 on the bars and I like it. OK, with the Magicshine on full the torch doesn’t add a lot of light but it does what a headlight should – illuminates the place you’re looking at – and it doesn’t have an annoying bright spot.

Riding solo down a trail I know very well, popped off a small lip to find a fallen tree lying across the trail. Bike stopped dead and I went sailing through the air to land on my face. Was very lucky to get away with a fractured eye socket and mild concussion as well as various cuts and bruises. Once I’d gathered my thoughts it took me about five minutes to find my bike, which had been catapulted about 30 feet away into dense bushes.

Skiing off piste properly for the first time last year, I was following the guide who said ‘Follow me carefully here. Do not fall!’ So naturally I fell, for 300 feet down a very steep slope before j-u-s-t managing to stop myself about 40ft away from a huge rock cliff. Exhilarating. 8O

You’ll be fine on a 456, Inbred or Scandal. However, for what you want, I’d go for a Scandal first, then an Inbred, then a 456. You’re on a tight budget so bear in mind that you may well need a new stem. On-Ones are long frames, designed to be used with a short stem (80mm max, I think). I’m guessing you’re aware you may also need new seatpost, front mech, BB, etc

I have an 08/09 Reign built up with 160 forks etc for Alps and uplifts. It’s OK as an all-day bike but it’s a compromise. I certainly suffer if I’m riding with others on more XC-friendly bikes.

One of the newer ones with lighter kit would, I’m sure be a good do-it-all bike. The Maestro suspension system is really good.

It’s not the road so you can’t expect people to automatically stay left, especially if there’s a better line. Having said that I prob would stick left if practical. It’s not a big deal is it.
Ee, I remember when we never used to see anyone else on night rides…

Done full service on RS and Magura and lowers on Fox. All v simple, although I couldn’t get a socket that would fit my Wotans. Grrrr! Also did an old pair of Marz AM SLs which were much more complicated with a weird air bladder thingummy and no instructions. Still went back together and worked OK though. IMO the really important thing is to keep the oil topped up in the lowers, otherwise it gets expensive.

I use mine on Amy lid with a Twofish lock lock. Works a treat.

That one that Singletrackmind links to is great. Excellent beam and good run times from a decent 18650 cell as sold by Smudge or Torchy the battery boy.

I miss those DiY lights threads. Cheap Chinese lights are great but it was fun building your own. Just not worth it now

Had a set of Cat Eyes with a big lead acid battery and not very many watts. Hit a stump within the first 300 yards, went OTB and split my helmet. Went OTB twice more then my rear mech exploded so I had to SS my bike in the dark and limp home. It was fab! Bought Lumicycle halogens the next day and haven’t looked back. I love night riding.

We see loads. I had one run into me and then between the wheels. Felt very solid! Mate was thrown over the bars by one dashing out in front of him last year. Caused total carnage. Badger was fine.

    I have one of these – http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skyray-1000LM-CREE-XML-XM-L-T6-LED-Flashlight-Torch-Lamp-Light-2x-18650-Charger-/290778308356?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Camping_LightsLanternsTorches&hash=item43b3bcdf04%5D.

My mate has a Diablo. It’s arguable which has the better beam. I can replace the battery in mine if it runs out but I rarely need to on a 2-hour ride.

I’m a Cock. 8) PM me if you’d like to pop out for an evening ride some time. There’s often a small group of us heading out on random nights and a later start than 6.30 suits me.

I bet it’s the little pill in the tailcap that needs tightening. Unscrew the tailcap and there will probably be two little holes that you can get the tips of a pair of nail scissors or something similar into. Tighten it up hard clockwise and all will be well.

I’ve had a set of Exotics for three years odd. They are fabulous. Superb value. If you want carbon then buy them

I think the connectors will be different. I used to have a Trailtech HID and I’m pretty sure it used bigger connectors than Magicshine.

I’ve had several sets of Shimano brakes of various models and never had any issues with them. Consistent performance and totally reliable.

I’ve been using Hayes Stroker Trails for about four years and now have them on four bikes. Dead cheap, zero maintenance and great performance.

Nice write-up. Love Molini and have had good times there with Jo and Ady. Some of the best riding I’ve experienced and a lovely town/ area. Must go back in 2013.

No way to tell for certain without giving them a top-up and bleed. Sounds v odd, though. Can’t think why it would have worked loose. If it’s been like that for a while then it may have got corroded.

I’ve been using one like this http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=290778308356&index=1&nav=SEARCH&nid=16271768808
For about a year. It has an excellent beam and the quality is great. Unbelievable value. I got it without batteries as I already had some decent ones from Torchy the battery boy

The size guide is pretty good IMO . I’m right on the borderline size wise and have several 16″ On Ones. Don’t sweat it though – the 18″ isn’t much longer in the TT.

Yep, had a steel one for ages and loved it. Have had a carbon one for 18 months and love it even more. Lighter, more comfy and with added zip. I have an Inbred SS to fulfil my steel bike needs

Looks dreadful and a bit more prone to damage but can’t see why it wouldn’t work OK.

Personally, I’d be looking for a neater solution.

I’ve had this a couple of times. Always assumed it was due to using CO2 so interested to hear that it’s not necessarily that.
    Hmmm…

I honestly thought I’d be able to resist this one, being a relative short arse, but now I’ve tried one Ithink my next rigid ss will be a 29er. Can’t see myself ditching 26 in wheels for more tech stuff though
