    What’s the bike?

It’s like Jamie’s 30 minute meals. If you have all the right parts and tools laid out in front of you, plenty of practice and no distractions you’ll get it done in no time. In the real world, 2014.

What about the Bontrager and Specialized versions?

I’ve got 3 of ’em. The last one I bought, cheapy black version about 18 months ago, was really sticky when new and would ‘t let go of my shorts. Nearly had me off the bike once or twice. Fine now the surface has smoothed off a bit. Anyone else notice this?

I’ll let you know. I’ve just changed my 26in Inbred SS for a 29in Inbred SS. First ride coming up…

I can tell you that a 29in front wheel makes a big difference if you’re riding rigid forks. I ran the old Inbred as a 69er for a while and really liked it

I’m not a complete beginner – I can bash out a pretty decent noise (to my ears!) and improvise a bit but I don’t really know what I’m doing which limits what I can do and i’m sure I’m making all sorts of schoolboy errors.

    I really enjoy practising/playing so that’s not a problem.

Think I’ll see if I can get some lessons but will try these sites in the meantime.

Great stuff. I’ll check it out. Is it worth getting a few lessons just to correct all the bad technique, etc that I must have picked up. Don’t think I want lessons long term

Relax. It will all be fine.

Price is showing as £34.99. Are we expecting it to go down from that? It seems to have gone up then down to the price it was before…

    I’m confusticated :?

I’ve also fitted Rons and Ralphs on Crests with zero probs. Went on much easier than either a Bontrager somethingorother or a Smorgasbord

Steve Marriott was pretty cool. And he couldn’t half sing

Tried skipping over a semi-frozen swamp and ended up OTB with mate behind landing on me from a height. He was rolling around in agony and my already titanium-reinforced finger is an interesting shade of purple today. All good fun : )

If you like riding 29ers then a 29er might be for you

I have 170s on my Reign to improve ground clearance, 175 on all others. Don’t notice the difference for pedalling

Had to buy a lighter to thaw my lock at the station this morning. Heading out for the first non-muddy ride in living memory tonight (I hope). Yee-haw!

Cup and cone needs regular maintenance. If you have several bikes (and a family) it’s hard to keep on top of that.

But it’s the disposable freehubs that put me off more.

I was sh*t on by what was either an owl or a monkey when out nightriding in the woods. Like a warm avalanche.

Also had a bird of prey dropped the innards of a rodent on my shoulder while riding my bike.

    I’m just lucky.

Yup, I reckon full carbon will be better. The Exotic ones are light so I’m guessing will have some flex, hopefully in a good way. I’ve been looking out for reviews on these without much success, so please report back if you do get them.

I had a quick explore at Puddletown last year when visiting friends in Darzett. Found some nice stuff and reckon I’ll be back.

Couldn’t be arsed to look at the vid

Sounds like it’s gone as far as it’s going to. If it’s in all but 0.5mm you could try using threaded rod plus nuts, washers and lumps of wood or similar to finish the job. If that doesn’t do it then I’d be asking a friendly shop to help remove it and replace it with something that fits

Mine – 18in SS Inbred – should be finished this weekend as long as I can find some crank bolts at the LBS.

Really nice pearl white finish on the frame – much classier than the, still nice, flat blue of the Swift fork I’ve paired it with.

Just hoping it’s not going to be too big. Always had 16in before but the geo is v similar to a medium Swift, which I found fine on a test ride, so fingers crossed.

    Will post pics when finished.

    So, science* tells us that:

    • lots of STW users are still buying 26in bikes
    • lots of STW users are still buying 29in bikes
    • everything’s going to be fine

    29er – 43
    26er – 50
    700c – 12
    650b – 7
    24er – 1
    20er – 1

    * not really science but as close as STW is likely to get

Crest are great rims, though. Very light, which for me is important for a 29er wheel. I was also tempted by the Merlincycles offer but I always seem to kill Shimano rear hubs in a year or so

Hoping to finish building my 29 Inbred SS tomorrow if I can sneak out to the shed without being collared for domestic duties

Mmmm, rules for inclusion in the tally = definite purchases only. No, “I’m thinking of getting xxxx in the next few months”

But feel free to tell us all anyway :-)

Lots of enthusiasm for (and buying of) 29ers among the chaps I ride with at the moment.

I used to think 29ers looked odd but these days I catch myself looking at 26in wheels and thinking “they look tiny”.

I see the advantages of both and I like variety in my riding so I think I’ll have at least one of each for the foreeable future.

It’s level pegging! My god, the adrenaline…

    29er – 23
    26er – 23
    700c – 7
    650b – 7
    24er – 1

Go for it. Perfect bike for trying out SSing and will be great in the area you ride, especially in current conditions
