    It’s hard being a grown-up sometimes, innit

You know what, I have faith that CTBM will organise a responsible event and manage the risks for himself, the riders and other trail users sensibly and professionally, no matter what he has said online to reassure the SSUK crowd that it will still be worth attending.

+1 for Paul’s. I bought a Giant Reign from them a few years back with 50% off and they were really good to deal with. Had a problem with the rear hub and they bent over backwards to sort it out for me.

Anyone know if any of these places do a proper SS 29er frame, with either track ends or EBB? I know you can get EBB converters for BB30 but I’m a bit wary

Luckily, I’ve got a bike from a straightforward British company- it’s an Onion Flatbread. Or something

I have some X-fusion Vengeance and they are toptastic. V good quality, great damping and adjustability

Inspired by Kaesae, I made a split collet extractor for the Horst link bearings on my Stumpy using an old V-brake boss and a random bolt. Worked like a dream on a bearing that hadn’t been touched for 7 years!

I use the decorative end of a curtain rail + threaded rod to seat star nuts.

Bit of plastic plumbing pipe to seat Pro 11 seals.

Drinks bottle compressor to seat ghetto tubeless tyres.

My experience is that Shimano are fine if you service the rear every 2-3 months. Front ones go much longer between services. The big drawback is that the freehubs die after about a year and new ones are silly money.

Superstar are a good alternative if you’re on a budget but they may need the (cartridge) bearings replacing before too long. The good news is that this is a quick and easy job.

If you’re looking for cheap fun and a conrast to your FS then you need a rigid SS Inbred with Crests on Hope or Superstar hubs with wide bars and a big tyre up front. Or you could go for a bargainacious Cannondale Trail 29 SS.

I’ve got a 29er Smorgasbord as a rear and it’s quite drifty. Don’t think I’d put one on the front.

I doubt I could afford one even if I sold all my bikes. I’d like to try one though

Shivering, soaked through and badly hungover, drinking tea in that little Wendy house at the soup stop at CyB, giggling like a hysterical schoolgirl because one of my riding mates is suffering worse than me and looking like he might either throw up or just die out on the cold, drizzly patch of grass in front of me.

IME Evans isn’t a proper lbs. They never have those little bits and pieces I’m after like a Hope freehub seal or a crank bolt and they always seem astonished that anybody might want such things.

Maybe it’s because I go to the London ones, which are geared up for selling top of the range crap to wealthy idiots.

Maybe I’m just a bitter old curmudgeon.

Yup, looks oaky. You’ll be fine on the sap front.

Could be a lime tree, in which case your car will soon look like someone’s opened a tin of golden syrup over it.

However, from that pic on this phone, it could also be a Christmas tree or a bonsai walnut.

On-One risers are usually dirt cheap. They’re a nice shape, 685mm wide, v stiff and the ‘titanium’ finish on the ones I had was lovely. Not the lightest but a good value cheap bar.

The most important thing for long-term weight loss is finding a healthy diet you can live with for the rest of your life. The best thing you can do for this – and for your all-round health – is to get used to eating loads of vegetables. I mean *loads*. And cutting down on fat and sugar.

I ran a 26in rigid SS Inbred as a 69er for a while. I liked it – funnily enough it felt like a halfway house between the 26 and 29 Inbred I have now. The front smoothed things out nicely but the smaller back wheel kept things a bit more nimble and fun. It didn’t roll like a 29er and it didn’t manoeuvre like a 26er but it was a happy compromise. Might go for another one if I get bored with the 29er.

AlasdairMc has it. Unless you know precisely what you’re looking for, you’re likely to spend a lot of time, effort and money on this and still end up with bits that don’t fit or are worn out.

Sell what you have (Retrobike is a good place to sell old XT, etc for silly money) and buy a whole bike that’s in working order.

Isn’t the usual STW perceived wisdom to go out and spend an absolute fortune on a full-susser, which will then never see the light of day, as whenever there’s any hint of rain you’ll be riding your rigid singlespeed?

    Busted 😳

Lots of good riding south of London, esp around Dorking and Swinley Forest areas. Personally, I find road riding in and around London unpleasant and dangerous but if you’re on the outskirts you can escape to quieter roads fairly quickly.

Really enjoying this. More now I have silly wide bars on.

I moved from a 26in then 69er rigid Inbred SS and it’s definitely different. It’s much smoother and has definite zip once the wheels are turning; the trade-off is less chuckability and playfulness but I’m getting this back as I get used to riding it.

BKB is soooo smoooooooooth at the moment. Really, really fast. TBH I’m not 100% sure I like it like that but I do appreciate the efforts of the trail pixies. Made a nice change from glop.

Matt, you missed a good ride. Bits of it were … dry.

If this keeps up for a week or two I might manage a smile. Oh, hang on, there’s rain and gale force winds forecast.

    Bugger.

I have RS7s on UN52. BBs last forever but have stripped two threads when trying to remove crank arms. I have external BBs on my other bikes and I do like how easy they are to remove. Both systems have their advantages.

The Wheelpro book is excellent. Explains how to build a simple but brilliant truing stand and tells you everything you need to know. Good spoke calculator too.

Eat the pie before you go, then simply tell everyone how delicious it was when you get there.
    EDIT: Bah! Too slow.

OK a serious suggestion: deconstruct the pie, carry the filling and mash in separate sealed pots then remake when you get there.
