I’d like a Ti version of my Buzzard with an EBB.
Please Sam.

Can you take that off easily when you don’t need it? And can you swivel it forward instead of having it vertical?

Might well take you up on that postierich. I take it you’re based in Kendal? Anyway, I’m off to look at the map

Tensioners aren’t *that* bad – but I know what you mean.

I had an 26in Inbred with carbon forks and it was as light as it needed to be. (A lot lighter than the 29er Inbred with Swift steel forks that I now have.)

^ that’s odd

If it’s
very
cold and wet or you’re only doing a short non-strenuous ride they can be great. Otherwise you’ll sweat like a pig.

Thanks for the info (and offer of a bed!). I’ll have to go and pore over the maps some more.

It won’t be this Thursday but possibly next, so I’m hoping the weather improves.

Think you can just press out the main bearings with a socket or similar.

Good luck with the Horst bearings. I made a split collet extractor from steel tubing (see Youtube for tips) which worked but was a bit of a faff

My two penn’orth:

* Don’t cut the bars until you’ve ridden it for at least a month
* Learn to brake with one finger. It gives you an extra digit on the bars
* Put the dropper back on and make an effort to use it. Not just for steep stuff but more or less anything techy or non-pedally

Enjoy your new bike. I was v impressed when I had a go on one

I have an original Phantom which I wear on most rides in spring, autumn, winter. Now need to replace it and wondering the same as the OP.

I want something that’s not too warm, that I can layer up and that will see off a bit of wet and then keep me warm when I’m wet through.

You just want a new bike, don’t you? Nowt wrong with that. But why? What’s wrong with the Stumpy? Or how do you want to rebalance the compromise?

(I’d be looking for a way to have two bikes)

Banning anything worries me. I don’t trust others to decide what I should be allowed to do.

I find it frightening how happy people are to ban stuff. I’m with Pierre Joseph Proudhon: “To be governed is to be kept in sight, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right, nor the wisdom, nor the virtue to do so . . .”

A dropper post (with remote) would be a good start. Makes a big difference IMO.

Bigger wheels won’t help you take on bigger drops. They do smooth out the trail a bit but they won’t soak up hits any better than 26in wheels.

By all means try a full sus but don’t get more travel/burliness/weight than you really need. That is, unless you’re prepared to spoil 95% of your riding for the sake of a bit more confidence on the other 5%

Tapered steerers, 650b, Maxle rear ends, tubeless, 20mm more travel – they’re all pretty marginal changes IME.

Probably not. You need a proper suspension grease like this

Simple answer: no.
Flow is heavier and heavier duty than a 717. If you’re after a Stans rim you want a Crest or, at a pinch, an Arch EX

As Matt says above, I have a Buzzard and I’m a big fan. It really is playful – and not just for a 29er.

The top tube is short but I’ve quickly got used to it and it contributes to the playful character. I’m 5ft 9in on a medium with a 50mm stem. It’s short but fun. Not done any all day rides on it yet but I reckon it would be fine.

I had one of those out of the blue offs last night. Riding narrow track between bushes and barbed wire at dusk I failed to see the substantial sawn off branch protruding into the trail and rode into it at speed. First I knew was my hand punching the tree and my hip hitting the deck. Ouch! Actually got off pretty lightly.

I hate unseen trail obstacles.

The ride before that I decided to roll a jump because I didn’t have enough speed to launch it. It was a gap jump. D’oh!

I crash fairly frequently. Like the pros. Ahem.

I’m just getting back into climbing after a few years’ break. Planning to do at least one evening at Craggy Guildford or Sutton (I’m in Dorking) as well as a weekend session. Used to lead HVS/E1 on grit, Pembroke, etc but mainly climbed on Southern sandstone. I’m looking for people to climb with so let me know if anyone’s interested.

In that case it comes down to how much importance you place on weight, price, looks and BB standard. You’ll still need to find and buy (£30) swapouts if you go for the Whippet. Oh, and I reckon the Whippet is stiffer in both good and bad ways.

That slot dropout Scandal you’ve linked to is an Inbred 😆 I don’t think they’ve made a slot Scandal for years unfortunately.

My mate’s C456 with Exotic carbon forks, Crest/hope wheels, Deus crank, Thomson post and stem, carbon bars, etc is flipping light – can’t be much over 20lbs-ish. Mine’s built much burliest with coil Revs, Reverb, etc and is much heavier but still a good weight.

I used to have a rigid 26 Inbred with carbon forks, bars, etc and that was lovely and light (but must have been at least a couple of lbs heavier than my mate’s C456).

Thinking about it – and depending on what they’re charging ATM – I’d probably go for the Inbred and spend the savings on nice finishing kit.
