Thanks stummpym4, it’s not the neatest job but I think it’ll do. I just used ordinary polyester thread in the end and double-sewed all the seams. I tried using v thick, strong stuff but it just jammed the machine.

A lighter material than the 1000D stuff I used would probably be easier to work with and lighter, but obviously a bit less durable.

I’m sure Singular Sam posted a while back to say that a Knard wouldn’t quite fit in a Swift fork, even though CharlieTBM’s pic shows one fitting nicely in a Niner fork which everyone seems to say is all-but identical. I’m confused.

DrP – I used 1000D pu coated stuff from Pennine Outdoors. Not the lightest but sturdy and should be hard wearing. Cheap too and good service. Here’s my newly completed seat bag, made from the same 1m piece of fabric, and there’s enough left for a bar harness.

Mudguards make sense. Unfortunately I have none. I don’t consider myself a bike tart but mudguards are the one thing I can’t bear to put on my bike no matter how well the work

Here’s my MYOG frame bag. Pretty happy for a first attempt. Now working on a seat bag and bar harness.
All bits and pieces bought online from Pennine Outdoor.

Also just bought a MyTimug from Alpkit and a cheap Terra Nova tarp from Field and Trek.

Itching to get out there now…

Having just made a frame bag, I’m half way through attempting to make my own out seat bag of 1000D PU coated fabric. I’ll post up pics and maybe some instructions if it works.

The DiY alpkit version looks like it could also be a good option.

I had one run between my wheels a year or two back, it whacked my foot (not a euphemism) as it went past and I can confirm that they are solid little buggers. A mate was sent sailing OTB by one not long after.

Ooh, didn’t realise how bad that pic was. Some lovely bikes on here, especially the Curtis and Cromag. That home made fella makes a lot of sense too. Good effort!

Oh, and get a Buzzard OP, you won’t regret it.

I got a train to Windermere then buses to Langdale, which worked fine. I was out walking by 10am. A bike would obviously make things easier. You do need to reserve a bike space with Virgin Trains though.

I was in a tent so didn’t see any meteors 🙁 but I did see all this:

I love building stuff. I’ve done bikes, lights and wheels and would love to build a frame one day. Currently working on bags for bikepacking.

Thanks for the info Sleepless. So much to do…

Ha! I had enough weight on my back without adding a couple of 35lb BSOs. Definitely wouldn’t fancy riding them on the upper section of Rosset Gill. Weather was incredible

Yep, thought about it for this trip but didn’t have enough time to prepare properly and also thought it might be more fun to take longer over it. One for the future.

I’d love one but it’s never going to happen 🙁

Well, I made the trip but I left the bike behind as I really wanted a wild camping adventure and I just hadn’t sussed a way of loading the bike instead of me.

Anyway, had an amazing time walking and scrambling in hot sunshine all weekend. Two nights out in the wilds, walking from Langdale over to Pillar via Jack’s Rake, climbers’ traverse on Great Gable, etc. Negotiating the steeper, narrower bits of Jack’s Rake with a big, heavy backpack was particularly exciting. 😯

Thanks all for tips and advice. I will be heading to the Lakes again with a bike as soon as I’ve made a frame bag, bar harness and seatpack. It’d be great to hook up with STW locals when I do. 😀

Oh, and bizarrely, coming down Rossett Gill at 9am I came across two kids’ BSOs abandoned by the path. Good effort to whoever carried them up/down there but I’m baffled as to why they bothered.

I ran mine for a short while with a double shim and a 30.9 Joplin. It was fine but it did worry me ever so slightly

I’d go with a tensioner. I’ve used the non-sprung, hanger-mounted ones with no probs in the past.

I just use a v strong spring loaded clip, like a mega bulldog clip, to kink the tube. Came from B&Q I think. Not what you’re after but it works a treat

Is there an SS-able Chinese carbon 29er yet? (Without a tensioner)

You can actually squeeze 29 in wheels in a C456. A mate has done it and said it was fine. He posted the evidence on here a while back. Another mate has 650bs on his C456 and loves it. Personally, I’d stick with 26 – it’s what the frame is designed for, you know you can get the tyres you want and you won’t be aware that the trail is failing to come alive under you (unless you’re in marketing?).

I very rarely use travel adjust and only one bike I’ve ever owned really *needed* it. I think you’ll be fine with a fixed fork between 130 and 150mm.

XT or SLX crank and groupset would be my choice. Same for brakes. Charge Spoon, Reverb dropper post, 50-70mm stem 740+ wide bars. Stans Arch EX rims on Hope hubs (as above, take the stickers off if you don’t like them). Job’s a good’un.

I can never make this work. I always have gaps and overlap. However, and I think this is important*, it doesn’t matter.

    * I actually don’t.

Good innit. I love unfamiliar familiar trails. Thank goodness we don’t have to put up with year-round dust like some poor souls in that abroad place.
