An average Cocks ride will include a selection of bikes from rigid singlespeeds to 150mm full sussers. Your Tallboy will be perfect.

The Humpert bar is only 630mm wide. That would put me off.

Had a great weekend – good course, good beer, good people, good band and even good weather. Thanks Wayne!

Up to a point, a heavy bike may descend better than a light one.

If all your mates are super-fit and riding light bikes and you’re struggling to keep up (and you care) then shedding some weight may be worth it. Otherwise, relax and save your cash.

I’ve been using an RSP Plummet for the best part of a year and I’m reasonably impressed with it. It came from a mate who’d had problems with it seizing and had stripped it and couldn’t get it back together. I greased it well, put it back together and added a zip tie at the top of the boot and it’s worked flawlessly ever since. It’s agricultural compared to a Reverb but I’ve found it utterly reliable. Can be had for £50 odd.

Now with a Dually and Chronicle on the front, On-One OG bars and an (ugly) dropper.

29+ in winter? Depends on your local mud. If it’s sticky clay clag be prepared for your wheels to end up weighing more than the queue at MacDonalds.

Stooge won’t take a 29+ rear wheel. Neither will a Swift

I’d agree with Nipper. It’s a nice enough ride and very scenic but the riding itself is underwhelming. I rode it on a rigid bike a few weeks ago and enjoyed it much more than previously as it slowed things down and added some technical interest. On a bike with suspension the main event is just a mildly rocky blast down a wide track with no time to enjoy the view.

Answer from Hope: sorry, no more drive rings. New hub time. 🙁

Ta for the replies. It is definitely knackered (no teeth, just humps).

I’ve emailed Hope so I’ll see what they say.

Sounds like a chainline issue. I use a standard XT front mech and a triple on my Swift with no issues.

Good work. It seems intuitively a good idea. What does the hub weigh?

Did the outer loop route from Aviemore to Braemar via Tomintoul in a day earlier this year in fairly grim weather. It’s definitely doable in a day.

I’ve used On-One and Surly tugs with v few issues on QR axles. Surli is much nicer but both work fine.

Anyone know if the standard fork will take a 29+ tyre – say a Knard on a Dually?

On-One OGs and Fleegles for me. I prefer the OGs – more swept and more comfy.

The Cocks ride from Nirvana every Wednesday at 6.30 throughout the year. It’s usually pretty fast and often fairly techy. You’d be very welcome and we won’t hold your bike against you. You’re also very unlikely to see a Santa Cruz 😉

I bivvied just off the trail in the FoD last year and was woken in the middle of the night by something smashing through the undergrowth towards me followed by a blood-curling snorty-growl-off between boars on either side of me. 😯 It took a while to get back to sleep.

You can get SLX F and R for £75 delivered from bike-discount.de . That’s probably cheaper once you’ve factored in re-posting two sets of brakes to other people.

I have an RSP Plummet, a couple of Reverbs and a Joplin.

The Reverbs are great and have only ever needed one service between them (they must be about two and three years old).

The Joplin is unreliable, wobbly and currently needs hoiking up with my thighs because it won’t return on it’s own.

The RSP is a bit agricultural but works fine. I got it off a mate who had problems with it sticking after mucky rides. He took it apart to service it but then couldn’t get it back together and gave up on it. I stripped it, regreased it and added a ziptie to the top of the rubber boot and it’s been 100% reliable ever since (cue catastrophic failure on next ride).

Get low, not back. Bend your arms and your knees and get your heels down. Look beyond the bottom of the drop to where you’re going next. Commit and ‘drive’ the bike rather than just hanging on. Relax and remember to breathe.

I love this bike. It’s got so many good ideas built into it – and there’s a purple one!

I just hope this is the first of a whole class of bikes like this.
