Cut threads are a bit weak

Not neccessarily, depends on the thread, If turning them they can be made any size/ shape for strength.
threaded rod = stretching issues and generally made of crap grade steel padded with sand and sawdust.

    Metal?
Use coolant/oil and slow speed if doing by handdrill.
Cut the metal, dont rub, thats the way you destroy drills.
Good drills for metal include Dormer or Titex

    That mallet must be heavy?

I’ve made myself a sine bar, lots of clamps etc from my engineering days, got some home made mic head holders, extended drills,
Also cnc’d my pc tower case side panel with a bio hazard sign.

Wish I had access to mill/lathe etc these days. What fun I’d have making bike bits!

Try the samaritans way north out of exford, then turn sharp right at the top and come back over prescott down, down stone lane..bet you get off and walk!

Then you could track across from there to rocks bungalow/higher coombe drop down to the river and travel along to winsford, more XC than downhill.

Then back to exford by going south out of winsford to townsend,up over yellowcombe lane, up through the woods etc to caractacus stone*, over around the punchbowl and downhill to the farm at withycombe. Probly best to have a compass/map.
Climb back up onto the road,
EITHER turn right for 500m and head up north just past the sheep dip to pick up tracks down over Bye common, then track back to exford the way you came along the river.

OR turn left and head along the road til you get to room hill and pick the track that heads northish back to exford via road hill
(avoid the ford at 869362, cos its not really passable and the tracks down from room hill/little ash is a bstard of a climb back up.

*caractacus stone to yellowcombe lane is good going the other way too, esp if you can do the steep dropoff/ditch jump as you come down into the woods at 905334!

..Oh, and my choice would be Doyle, he was the copper and stands to reason he was a much more nasty f0kker than Bodie, the bloke from the softy SAS.

As much as I bloody loved the professionals it seems as though they are both a couple of w4nkers because they try to distance themselves from their time doing the show.

If I remember correctly*, Martin Shaw has it on his rider that he doesn’t answer any questions on the professionals.

    Shame.

Still, I loved the stunts n stuff, especially as they did a lot themselves. You dont see much of that these days, even car chases are pissp00r boring CGI crap. VROOM VROOM RS2000, none of that traction-controlled-jason-statham-audi-A6-pish.

    *waits to be corrected*

Thanks all for your replies, seems like there’s a good variety of techniques to use.
I’ve been mostly trying to stay in my saddle for most of the climbing I do but I do get out when I need to give my thighs a breakfrom a long slog!
I had to use the ‘crouching’ technique at haldon, where theres a big gravelly low grip climb, just after the ‘ black’ section.
I assumed there was a right and wrong way to climb, as there are in so many other aspects of biking.
Got any other tips..apart from adding one of those motor things ? 🙂

Why arent there any ‘american football’ style chin protectors on bike helmets?

I’m sure TJ will talk about them not having bloody eps either, but they’ll stop a f4t b4st4rd y4nk’s fist from taking your face off.

Mrs Cheeze uses them front n back..

Sticks to most things but a bit of gloopy mud and shes spinning/sliding..

I dont use them, I prefer something a bit more tractor-like.
I quite like a swamp thing on the front, seems to cope well with all conditions and doesnt seem to wear too bad on the road.

I’m also using schwalbe mountaineer 2s at the moment (F+R). Although a lot o peeps say they lack grip, I find them pretty good as all rounders, cuts through the gloop that has Mrs Cheeze off and walking with her Nevs. Puncture protection and a bit skinnier at 1.8 for a lil less rolling resistance.
Of course, I’ll probably change my mind if I have a prang

Great guys, thanks all for your input.

We went to Les Gets last year about the same time and found that bugger all shops were open (The week before the main season gets going)
Thats why I’m concerned that if I break something, its not a matter of paying for a new one at a cost, its a matter of finding what I need in the first place.
As you say, if I buy spare mechs, they’ll at least be there in the future also. We only have 8spd mechs, so they’re reasonably cheap.

    Thanks Steve,

    Yes, we’re flying.
I plan on sticking on my tough-as-old-boots-but-bloody-heavy high rollers, with the folders to carry for emergency.
I’d better get two mechs, as shes on Shimano and I’m on SRAM, I dont think they’re swappable.
