    Two sets of Wahwahs.

Reasonable weight (0.5 kg ish I reckon) and price (£40 to 50 IIRC).

Thin and pins that load from behind. Plenty grippy for me.

Sell to who you want, it’s your stuff.

Did you do right in the way you sold those brakes? IMO no, not really.

If in turn you get dicked around on the classifieds in the future I’d say tough luck and don’t moan.

I’ve used Grangers 2 in 1 (cleaner and re-proofer). Worked fairly well on two old jackets (Raceface and Helly). They only recommend a 40 degree wash so the Raceface still niffs a bit (think hotter wash would have helped and there’s nothing stopping you using a higher temp, just Grangers say it has no benefit).

To get the re-proofer / DWR to take you have to tumble dry. Wearing both jackets since they bead better than they did. Haven’t used them a lot since doing so can’t comment on how durable the re-proofing is.

Just gone from a DHX5 air to an Pushed RP23, very nice.

    Size is right.

I’ve got a Woodman and I’d agree, not up to much.

I’ve never had any problems with Salsa or Hope.

to ride good as a priority

Absolutely, but (as someone else said on another thread) there’s a very angry farmer somewhere because the sheep have got out of the field ;-0

My god you’ve managed to make that bike look fugly, in fact, incredibly fugly.

Ton – one ride, wow, really tried that one out eh?

It wasnt the fork length it was stability sorry, something wasnt right at all- it felt twitchy/nervous and unstable.

Slack HA exacerbated by (over)long forks can make the steering weird. It turns OK within a limited range and then suddenly goes, almost “over-steering”. Sort of flip-flop :-S

There’s probably a great and logical technical explanation but in general it just means don’t go too long. Given Brant designed it (IIRC) to be dead-stable with mid-length forks all this urge to put mahoosive long ones on seems a bit silly.

    Hey-ho.

Hora how do longer forks make the steering faster?

I wondered as well until I realised T’hora had posted the comment. Maybe he means more flip-flop?

Anyhoo, nice looking build. 16″ or 18″ frame?

but it’ll probably settle in if you go for a ride….

I’m not exactly sure what the problem with the headset is (or rather, where it isn’t flush e.g. cup and headtube, between race and cup or below race and top of fork). Whatever, letting it “settle” sounds like a really crap idea. Strip it and get it all together properly. Slop and play in something with bearings sounds a sure way to give yourself an even bigger repair bill.

I had a right shonky one on a set of 454s and they were repaired under warranty. Go back and show it to the shop.

On the two sets of pikes I’ve got the dial works smoothly with little / no wibble and has enough resistance to stay in the position you turn it to.

DHX 5 Air on my bike got stuck down over Xmas. It’s an old one (2 years ish). RP23 replaced it and feels much better (Push tuned as well). Never really got to grips with it.

Flooks comment something like “it’s got no proper rebound circuit”, whatever that means in reality. Interesting that it’s the one Fox shock he doesn’t service.

I have a stuck down one if you’re interested?

No charging IMO. I suspect there’s much more to a website re: traffic / hits / links / commercial ads / blah blah rather than poncing about adding 50p to some ad selling barge-like stems. If you’re bothered, donate.

Besides, charge someone and you’re starting to get into offering a service which brings in more rules, expectations, standards etc. I doubt the grief would be worth it.

A function to filter what shows in classifieds between “WTD”, “FS” or both (as is) might be useful, sort some peoples problems and sounds easy to accomplish (to an IT illiterate).

Always wanted a Transition Preston in its original guise (4″ R and up to 5″ or 6″ F). http://www.bikemagic.com/news/article/mps/uan/4328 – although in that frame size it looks goping.

Never found one for the right price (and would never have bought off the guy originally importing them – twunt). When the Hemlock mk1 came out I was really tempted. But then Cotic (just as Transition did) went to 5″ R. Pity, was something I would really have liked to try (although the reasons for the change Cy gives seem perfectly fair).

Will just have to stick to the 5 Spot and stop being such a bike tart ;-)

EDIT: and it’s always seemed an obvious way to have a bike that’d work well for most people. If long forked hardtails make sense and are good to ride then a short/long FS is surely a winning idea. Don’t really subscribe to the ethos of perfectly matched F&R travel.

I got 454 air Pikes for my 5Spot. They’ve been back twice under warranty for weird knocking / leaking oil / compression lockout coming loose etc. This all happened after very little use. They are working again now and nice enough but if buying again or if I had know what I know now would get 454 coil.

Coil 426 Pikes on another bike have been fine from secondhand and much more use.

    Not ridden Floats.

Personally really like maxle / bolt thru’.

Actually, just checking what PJ wrote:

The trails are still covered in snow, but 90% rideable at present, of piste and some open sections of the climb it is up to 1ft deep

To me it’s quite clear the deep snow (up to 1ft) is off piste, i.e. not on the trail apart from sections of the climb in the open.

There were people riding last Saturday (07 Feb). They were managing but the snow was presenting extra challenges on any sections of the trail where it settled (e.g. Descent Line). In the woods many sections were clear.

I haven’t been up since but until today there’s not been any significant snow (well, maybe a little on Sunday night). I suspect it will mostly be rideable with a little caution and probably a few icy patches.

But, TBH, it’s a trail on a hill, with some trees, mud and rocks. Unless you’re driving miles and miles I’d just go and try it for yourself. How bad could it be?

” … ripped off the wing mirror and started swearing at the driver only to realise it was the wrong car.

    Getting any hints yet?

Slightly different but I remember a mate got knocked off his bike by some bloke in a Merc ML 4×4. He got up, chased after it and ripped off the wing mirror and started swearing at the driver only to realise it was the wrong car.

He looked a bit sheepish and rode off quickly before the terrified woman worked out what was happening.

Does this not speak volumes to you people?

Aye, cheers for the heads up. Generally speaking the trails there have been fairly vandal / user conflict proof. Mostly because there were few / no previous users. Some twonk kept pulling out and flinging around the markers on the Norwood side several years ago but paint markers stopped that and (I think) they got bored / accepted it.

Norwood (where all the felling and thinning has been done recently) has plans. FE backed away from a previous agreement for a formal trail on that side nearly two years ago (it was always part of SingletrAction’s intentions and the Management Plan we prepared though). Thanks to some passionate negotiation at the time and a lot of lobbying since we were able to firstly keep the trail and secondly reclaim it after disturbance.

We have permission to reclaim it now after the latest forestry works and hope that, in the process, it will expand and improve. There’s still a bunch of finessing to do through FE for all this to happen but initial reclamation work will probably have its first *day* on 7th Feb. Keep an eye on the STA forum / site at http://singletraction.frankencrank.com/phpBB2/index.php

The timber work on the Cole Chute (to give its sponsor, Cole Construction, proper recognition ;-) is a trial run and it’s good to hear it’s holding up so well, so far. Time will tell. Thanks to Andy at Amogen for the generous support so far (he provided all the timber gratis).

Shame to see in that gallery that the numpty picture of the Chairman falling on his arse isn’t there ;-)

Beard: TFT have 2008 and 2009 (bigger air sleeve). The 2009 can apparently blow through the middle of it’s travel a little more, yadda yadda, whatever, he didn’t think it was worth the difference and did me a 2008 RP23 (with delivery and fitting hardware) plus Push upgradee for £330 (instead of £350). I won’t be dining out on the saving but hey, better something than nowt :-)

Also, he mentioned Fox are due to put their prices up at any point soon. Who could avoid it with the drop in £ to $? All stuff to bear in mind I guess.

TFTuned have done me a deal on an 08 Pushed RP23. You buggers had better be right ;-)

Fivespot: sounds just like my experience as I was running similar pressures in a struggle to reduce the sag to a reasonable level. The thing wept much more onto the shaft than I expected as well. TFT wasn’t very complimentary about the rebound circuit in the DHX Air either.

Even Turner recommended a DHX Coil for big stuff or the RP23 for anything else. Guess they aren’t so found of the Air version anymore either.

Bloody hell, didn’t want to make a new shock even more expensive ;-) Interesting to know though, thanks.

What was it that you found tosh about the DHX?

TBH the ride on mine has been OK, as far as I can tell. Reliability wise it’s pretty disapointing. However, it’s one of those things that unless you’ve tried them back to back (the different shocks) it’s hard to know if a change would be worthwhile. Email from Turner raved about the RP23.
