Issues around safety and ventilation in those tunnels iirc.

The only safety hazards are the 400kv cables currently plonked through the tunnels, they were only built in the 20th century and ventilation wasn’t an issue because they were intended for operation by electric traction. Considering the Sheffield end is likely to be electrified towards London sooner rather than later the ventilation argument becomes increasingly null & void. In any case, ventilation is already an issue on the existing rail route through Totley tunnel.

Rail isn’t really suitable for short trips like Sheffield to Manchester + there is already a rail line between the cities. It’s naive to think that a single trip would be saved if there was more freight capacity on the route.

Of course it is, two large university cities less than 40 miles but the best part of 90 minutes apart by road?

The current rail route is circuitous and takes an hour which is nearly as bad as the road journey, and is also operating at full capacity having to make allowances for slow stopping trains and freight services to and from Peak Forest.

When washing the car I’ll try not to pour so much oil over it in future.

No. As in no, they didn’t do 2×9; only 3×9, 2×10 and 3×10.

Better off with two, one low range (ie Syntace 1-20nm) and one higher, I use a big Teng 20-60nm.

Had a look at that E955, impressive. Probably a bit pointy for us in this country though, the RSSB would have a heart attack and condemn it for the risk of making cows in nearby fields miscarry.

I don’t even count the amount of tick bites I get every year, even had a couple on my Nuts mm that was unpleasantly itchy. Thankfully none have been infected.

So does pretty much everything on the main line these days, air brakes on rolling stock are slightly different to air brakes on other stuff…

But back on topic. As a driver wouldn’t mind having a spin in a 92 – ticks most boxes:
    Noisy
    Big
    Heavy
    Right number of wheels
    British made
    Fast enough
Just shy of 7,000hp should do it (continuous)

Even go for a jolly through the tunnel if you wanted.

‘Chemical free’. So what’s it made out of then, photons?

    or,

‘95% fat free’. That’ll be 5% pure lard then. And probably shedloads of sugar and salt to compensate but hey.

There is one well known (cheap) branded cat food that is notorious for increasing risk of struvite crystals according to my other half with her vet nurse hat on, I’m not 100% sure what she said it was though so don’t want to risk giving out duff info (or open myself up to libel). My parents’ cat suffered badly with crystals and we started him on Hill’s SD every other day in supplement to wet food which stopped the problems (vets since recommended Hill’s CD). Too much reliance on SD/CD foods can apparently also be detrimental as it can form a different type of crystal which is harder to dissolve.

Who are all these people with ‘helmet cams’ in their cars

Give it a couple of years and everyone will have one, you can get a mini camera (ie 808 type) that records in full hd and is small enough to sit on top of the rear view mirror unobtrusively for less than thirty quid now, cheaper than the memory cards they record to.

So what’s the consensus on the Pollard’s place in Walsden? Overrated? I’ve always found it all right, above average at least (and opening at 9am & selling carrot cake helps) but a mate of mine down the road reckons it’s not even the best chippy in Walsden. Definitely the best-known though.

Not sure of the experiences of others but the KMC equivalent of the powerlink needs pliers to fit and remove on both my X10SLs, simply too stiff to split or join by hand, just the most obvious observation between them and SRAM. Works perfectly with Shimano IME.

Camden market is full of them. Or their approximation. Overheard a trader on Saturday giving his spiel to a young lady: ‘these are the good fakes and those are the **** fakes where the wires come out’. The mind boggles.

Reminds me of a mate at work who, while touring in Australia, misjudged his logistics rather on one occasion and resorted to drinking from puddles. He now lives off out-of-date food.

But to the OP I would think the biscuit isn’t helping.

My Hope Pro 3 SP XC6 hubs on Stans ZTR355 are the lightest wheels I’ve ever ridden, highly recommended.

If the shifters are rotating there’s something wrong with the way they’re fitted. It’s the newer HBSP263R you need. CRC have them, although only in silver. No problems with mine and shifter vs lever spacing is good, has about 1/2″ lateral shifter adjustment. No excessive tightening required.

Until recently I had the Tacx Antares (IIRC), I sold them to a mate who does road and track due to my space constraints ATM. Seemed well made and had no problems,.weighed a ton though. They will definitely improve your cadence & coordination if you stick with them, start with that before taking the plunge on resistance kit. I didn’t find the noise excessive, less than my turbo, but I wouldn’t use them too regularly upstairs or in a non-ground floor flat etc.

Edit – just seen Zerocool’s post – the Antares did have plastic rollers but I personally didn’t have any problems with static using Specialized slick 26″ tyres. Maybe investing in an earth strap would be recommended!

In Iceland and parts of Scandinavia it can apparently be seen as rude to tip, with the number of Americans usually in Reykjavik it’s no wonder they (and their volcanoes) are so angry…

That’s rubbish, sounds like you got a jobsworth guard. I work as a driver and this sort of thing is embarrassing. Guidelines definitely do allow the guards to use discretion, I’m not sure of the exact wording and we as drivers are not trained in any ‘retail’ stuff but most trains have at least (physical) room dotted about for five or six, depending on wheelchair space occupation etc. What really boils my wee is that every day dozens of little toerags crowd onto trains together with their ‘accessory’ bmxs, they’re slowly stuffing it up for the rest of us. Myself and my guard had twelve of these little darlings turn up at one station this time last year, we told them we would take six of them and for our efforts then got six mobile phones thrust at us with whining parents on the other end.

As a suggestion perhaps try writing in, if you feel the train was quiet (can’t see it being busy up there) and you should have been afforded the benefit of the discretion at least the guard in question might get his/her ear bent by their manager and be a bit more lenient in future. We can hope. Leeds and Skipton guards (who most often work the route) are renowned as jobsworths though so it might be a drop in the ocean.

Blade orientation. New windscreen won’t solve the problem. Use more rain-x anyway as it’ll bead the water and at least allow you to see for now.

The cap/bolt jobby does adjust bearing preload but also compresses when the actual NDS crank arm fixing bolts are fully torqued – try to remove the plastic bolt when the cranks are fully done up and it won’t (shouldn’t) budge. It’s made of plastic so it has these characteristics.

I can only hope that they get it in stock sharpish or I will report them to the Office of Fair Trading, using this site (as well as numerous others) as evidence of malpractice.

Considering a certain bike shop in Buxton is still staggering on after all these years it might be a waste of time. I ordered some X0 shifters a few months ago from Tredz, price was cheapest by a margin and they arrived within a couple of days max. Obviously only one order but there you go.
