    Its the screen stoopid!
The screen on the iPad 3 (sorry new iPad) is fantastic. Well worth the modest premium in cost versus the iPad 2.

I went from an iPad 1 straight to a 3 and the speed difference and the screen make it a very worthwhile expense.

In my school you were either C64 or Spectrum. I was C64 and revelled in the better graphics.
Oh… then there were the kids that had Acorns or BBC Micros, they all went on to be computer programmers, or let them sit gathering dust as there were not as many games to distract from the learning element.

So a mate is 3 cars behind you and you want to park together so you can have some post ride banter while the bikes are packed away…nothing wrong with saving a space for a mate. Would say theres a gap of only a minute or two for it to be credible. The OP needs to relax.

anxious: firstly lets be clear, you have nothing to be ashamed of. One thing I have learnt over the years is that crippling crises of confidence or motivation can hit any of us. some of the “strongest” people i know have been hit by depressiion.
Though i have never had it myself, like most poeple I have had a glimpse of what it might be like, but I suspect its more “maungy lite” compared with full on depression and anxiety.
No easy answers, one thing that might help is that this is not a binary situation, I actually think all humans are complex creatures and we carry round more insecurities and fears and hangups than we ever show in public, i have yet to meet anyone who has emotions and humanity without a degree of fragility.
The things that make you weak are the the other side of the same coin that make you human. If. you dont try to be perfect and just commit to being ok and active then this might help. Therapy works too.

Take care, have fun ( pop a few pills in the meentime).

Lots of us don’t believe in a bloke with a beard looking down on us giving out luck or pestilence. However if folk draw comfort or fortitude by appealing to “something external to themselves” then there is no harm. To me its no different to crossing your fingers or making a wish. I am an athiest, but this Dawkins led neo-athiesm is almost as offensive as the religious nutters we see at the fringes of all beliefs.

I did a similar thing at Cadbury world about 10 years ago, reversed out of a bay into a low rise bollard. I always take it steady in car parks though, so even though it was a tin foil fiesta, it only ,ade a slight mark in the bumper.

So is that why Aldi (german supermarket) has nice Argentinian wine for super bargain prices? Its to support Mercedes and VW exporting to their country! Well you learn something every day. Doesn’t harm me if Germany exports to South America…so on with the plonk.

Shimano, Hope, Magura are all good, I have one set of Hayes and they are not as corrosion resistant as shimano and Hope.
    Never tried Avid.

Choron , thats a great insight, and sounds like a real risk.

HOWEVER….the important question to answer is should I buy Argentinian red wine? Am I supporting a corrupt decaying country by doing so, or showing solidarity with the producers.
For now I will stick to chilean pinotage until we can get a STW agreement on Argie plonk.

I believe in supporting local business. I don’t practice it enough.
Where there is a skill involved, ie technical, craft or knowledge then I believe in supporting the little local guy, otherwise he wont be there when you need him.
For most bike bits I buy online since I trust my own mechanical skills over those of most bike shops.
So I buy my bikes from Planet X and my brakes and wheels from hope, but source them from online normally.

Do folk actually “own” a thread? They might start it, but there is no ownership (classifieds excepted perhaps, or requests for specific info).

No appologies for being a fan of the on-one/PX business model from me.
Great bunch of folk making good products for sensible costs.
I visited their old site several times, mainly to deliver fresh supplies of tea and cake and pick up the odd bike or frame. They have a really nice bunch that work there, all the professionalism of Merlin, but without the Lancastrian surlyness.
I like to think they are happy because they drink nicer tea!

    Nice post Dave.

my bruv has a house in Quillan. Lovely part of the world.
Aix la Thermes is the ski resort nearby, i think they do Mtb in the summer.
The whole area is very popular with bikers, mainly road, but I understand that there is also good mtb trails to be had.

    http://thegwpf.org/uk-news/242-the-economic-suicide-of-green-britain.html

Though the source is not one I would normally choose, the story above checks out.

Basiically with a surplus of steel in the world due to the 2008 recession, TATA found they could get money from the EU for reducing EU emmisions (carbon credit surplus) AND get money from UN for getting Indian plants to the same standard at the one in teeside 50% approx reduction).

Big corps can be bad at this and the Northeast has had more than its fair share of abusive global corps. The Tata story is similar to the ABF one at Twinings. Twinings closed their NE plant, and applied for an EU grant to set up a new one in Poland.

Thankfully the ABF grant has now been refused:

This is good news. The teeside area is really beginning to pick up after too many years of decline.
Its becoming more popular as a destination for container ships and the steel mill is right next to the docks, so is ideally suited for inbound and outbound materials with virtually zero road miles.

Well done to the site and employees (and possibly the investors and unions) for turning this site back on, it really is good news for the area.

Tadcaster and Malton are lovely areas too! I live in Leeds because I cant afford a family home in Harrogate where I work. Should the government subsidise me to move to Harrogate?
(The fact I prefer Leeds shall be left out of this for arguments sake!).

If there is a willing audience then why should she stop. I am not aged myself yet, but have zero intention of bowing out gracefully as the years creep up. Far better to enjoy the years you have.

If you were educated in the nice schools in York and can only earn £12400 then you clearly were no t paying attention in class. There is no “right” to live in a particular area just because you were born and raised there.

I have had one for the past 5 years and its my most used lens.
It give good consistent pictures and is fast focusing and smooth to zoom.
My f1.8 50mm is a bit sharper and used in low light, but as a use anywhere lens the 18-200mm Nikkor VR is brilliant.

If you live near Leeds you are welcome to try it out.

I think itsalso supplychain and related to oligopolys/duopoliesthat exist.
If you are making a car then you have a very compact, squeezed supply chain, with multiple no namecompanies able to bid for the supply of individual parts (ok the likes of bosch escape this to some degree).
    Now look at bikes…
The number of fingers in the pie as separate brands is massive:
suspension…well that will be fox or sram taking a cut.
    drivetrain…erm well shimano or sram
Contact points has more players and that why saddles and bars and stems can be had cheaply.

We demand as users subcomponents from brands we trust. We pay this price for known quality and length of technical support (compare with CODA OR Specialized own brand stuff which will leave you high and dry for spares a few years down the road).
The price of drivetrains astounds me…..£300 or more for a friggin crankset. £300 for dura ace shifters….here is where the money is creamed off.

Overall though, bikes at normall levels are cheaper than ever….£500 buys more now than it did in 1992 when I started.

mboy, not a hard and fast rule regarding age/mileage.
My logic goes as follows a four year old car with 80k on clock will have spent its time on motorways and likely have had one business owner, probably with a full service history. I really believe that motorway miles are good for a car, esp modern ones. The build up of fuel deposits and gunk seems a bigger killer of engines and ancillaries (egr valves etc) than problems of old like piston rings and head gaskets. High mileage keeps these bits cleaner and also helps keep the exhaust in good condition.
My last volvo was 14 years old and had 175000 on it. It was age not mileage that was starting to show on it, corroded brake pipes etc. So my age thing is related to 8 years of exposure to Uk winter and daily short journeys is typically worse than 4 years with more mileage.

There are however some great older bargains out there. My next door neighbour sold his fabia 1.4 mpi in january due to his age. It was 2004 model with 11500 miles (yes…11500!). He sold it for just over £3000 and because he has a carport and only used it twice a week it was almost factory fresh. despite the low mileage though the car had recently had a load. of engine money spent on it for lambda and nox sensors.
So just use your common sense on assessing the life the car has probably has.
