konastoner, that would be brilliant. I also have Ben above valliantly trying to get me one and a couple of offers of loans when people get theirs.
Where does your wife work? Unless she is in the far east I doubt she works where they are made?

So last week we were interviewed by the BBC about the RasPi case we are designing. Links are above. I know they say that some people have a good face for radio. I think I have a good voice for lexicography.

Enjoy BBC Leeds at its best!

Hiya Paul, you don’t need to disable the warning. You need to find out what its warning you about and FIX it. To be fair, if its raising an audible alarm then it must be serious.
If you search on your cars relevant forum there will be heaps of people willing to do you a scan for free or a 4 pack of shandy.

ouch…hope the wee fellah is OK.
At least he will be carefull near doors now…no need for those guards.
If you wrapped in plastic and then bandage, and then ice (ie keep the ice away from direct contact with the digit to prevent it freezing.
) then you did the right thing.

Would say fingers crossed, but probably not appropriate.

In true singletrack style, can I say that neither approach is best!
Buy a 3-5 year old car instead. They are far from bangers, but have had the brunt of the depreciation.
I have a 9 year old Audi A2 that I bought for £7000 in 2006. Its still worth £4000 today and has done me proud for 60,000 miles.
Regarding the fixability of modern cars, I actually believe they are EASIER than old cars. Treat the diagnostics systems as your friend. They tell you which bit is throwing up faults. A £20 cable from Ebay and a free copy of VAGCOM lite will let you get at the fault codes on any VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat and a quick Google will tell you what the code means and probably link to some sad bloke on the internet who justifies his manhood by posting how to fix said fault.

Cars from 5-8 years old are plenty safe enough and pre 2004 diesels are often less problematic than newer ones as they are less likely to have DPF’s

Just been interviewed by the BBC for a slot on Radio Leeds! They interviewed four of us, including the principle and a pupil. We are now geared up for a full on Pi Case Project! (Still need to get my mits on a unit though!)

Mechanically tip top when it comes to bearings, gears brakes and cables. Not too fussy with chain and frame.
I cant stand having worn bits, and for the few quid it costs to keep them in fine fettlle I can be more confident that they wont let me down in use.

    Well said Mr F.
I refuse to be pigeonholed into a neat collective.
If Tony Blair and half the labour MP’s (and other partys too) are left wing, while at the same time feathering their own nests with capricious greed then I am left wing. I believe in public duty and would never act in this way.
However when it comes to work and benefits then I am more right wing. Cant do with spongers, and there are many in this country that expect to be propped up by others. Minimum wage is a good thing and should be higher. NHS is good and should be well funded.
Trains should be cheap and state owned. Immigration should be limited to need and genuine refugees.

So you see, a real smorgessbord of left and right.

Research online for best price because different shops have different offers. These offers are often better than the 10% you might get off by haggling.
    Do not buy extended warranties.
Once you are confident on what you want and what it should cost then pick a quiet day, and explain that you are after several items to set up a home, money is tight and you wondered what extra help could be given on price if you bought all from one place.

I think a mixed approach. For a the thief you need different tool for cables, chains and dlocks, so to make life hard for the scum use a combination. At home I use multiple locks of different types so that the chav scum would need half of screwfix to get through.

The flying ox is potentially right. If the new guy stuffs up the french economy then it will really play into the Torys hands come 2015.
So if the euro is back at 1.30 against sterling and the french are out in force burning sheep and turning to sean penn and other loony parties then Cameron will just point accross la manche and say…look what we avoided, can we have another go without the libdems please.

I think the above is likely. Eitherway what happens to France will feed into UK politics greatly over the next 3 year.

Definately yes. I am currently considering a spencer ivy from Crossgates cycles to help with the Leeds to Harrogate commute. The Kalkhoff and panasonic pedelecs are really good, you can still pedal hard, but you just go faster and hills are a doddle.

Thanks also! Naturally if someone can help me buy one for a sensible price in the next few weeks that would be even better. Anyone have a friend at RS or Farnell?

Thanks for the great response so far.

Hones and LX are the same, just different colours. Hone was discontinued a couple of years ago or more.
SLX and XT has carbon fibre support for the middle ring, so is a bit lighter.
If the Hone/LX is a lot cheaper then go with that, there is nothing wrong with it.

It’s a great idea, but would need to be legislated for. In the same way as you can’t sell toys covered in toxic paint.
However H&S is one thing, the main difference is wage costs, and you can’t really regulate for that (at least not ethically).

I am looking at developing a low cost case for the Raspberry Pi. It has me VERY excited and will involve me, my local school and some tame packaging suppliers that I work with in my day job.

Planning to make the case out of high quality sustainable carboard and slot it together in two halves like one of those archive boxes. Should be able to sell for £3 or so delivered.

Apart from a few geeks I work with, the level of interest in Pi is very low. Shame really, but I hope it gathers momentum.

DrP: you said you are using a “tank” of oil every 700miles. How much is this? Do you mean a litre?

Molgrips: reason that the sparkplugs look greasy if there is no combustion is because they get covered in petrol, but it never burns/ignites. So I (assume) that it sort of evaporates off due to the engine temp, but leave behind any of the heavier fractions of oil.

    CHB
    Full Member

No they look oily (like a west yorkshire cafe spatula) as there is no combustion in the affected cylinder if the coilpack goes. Each cylinder has its own coil. The FSI runs at very high compression ratios compared with “normal” engines.
They are great engines, but a little high tech for many. My A2 gives 50mpg and goes like stink for a “girls car”.

    CHB
    Full Member

I have an Audi A2 with the 1.6FSI engine (presume its the same lump from approx 2003-2005?).
Coil packs are known to fail on these cars and cause very rough idling and the engine light to come on. The coils are a bit tricky to remove (friction fit so you sort of have to wiggle them off the spark plug). If a coil has failed then the corresponding spark plug will be oily.
Coils are £25 a go, if yours are original then just replace all four as the newer ones are more reliable than the pre 2006 ones.

Not sure why the car is burning lots of oil, my FSI uses maybe a litre or so in 10,000 miles (ie between changes). Could be a serious problem?
Other problems with FSI’s are Nox sensors, part for this is c£160 but easy to fit.

Ideally you need to find someone with VAGCOM scan software and get the fault codes read. If you are anywhere near Leeds I can do this for you FOC.

TJ dont disagree with higher taxes in principle, if they are spent wisely. Happy to pay more personally if it benefits society. Fact is though that gordon did the spending bit, but massivley screwed up on the “lets get value for money with this extra cash” and also messed up on the “lets raise taxes and revenue to fund this”.

He ran the country like a working class alcoholic with a winning lottery ticket (except the ticket was lost).

    CHB
    Full Member

TJ and others. Dont know if you are familiar with the idea of profit and loss within business?
Basically any company has overheads that are sort of fixed and not linked to sales volume. they then have cost of sales (ie making stuff) that hopefully they can sell for a profit. If you sell enough to cover your fixed costs and your cost of sales then you break even. if you sell more then you make a profit, if you sell too little to cover fixed costs and variable costs then you make a loss.

Now extend this model to a country.
Fixed costs are the costs of society, teachers, bin men, NHS etc etc They dont on their own generate wealth for the country, but they are vital support functions to keep the country functioning.

The variable costs and profit for the country is mainly from private endeavor and the taxes etc paid by these companies and individuals.

So to keep a country solvent you have to ensure that the fixed costs (state) can be afforded by the level of income generated.

Now ok thats simplistic, because if a state worker buys from a private company then it sort of offsets a lot of the effect, but its not sustainable to have a country with huge state because it has to be paid for somehow, and state cant fund state.
Higher taxes can fund MORE state, but the balance between state and private has to be struck and Gordon swung the pendulum to far in the JEESUS WE ARE GONNA BE SKINT direction.

Its only a very minor change. Headlines on r4 tonight…..”economy is back to where it was in autumn 2010″. well whoopee doo, thats hardly news. OK minus 0.2 is recession plus 0.1 is growth, but they are both within a rizla paper of knack all.

The economy needs to create jobs that bring in money from outside the UK thats the only way we will grow out of this mess.

It will be 2014 before the shoots of recovery start to look good for the coalition. Gordo and Balls took us into this mess with a zeal not seenin most other countries, its bound to be unpopular getting the country back onits feet.
