I have the makita one 36v. Really needs 5AH batteries as it eats 3Ah for breakfast. Power wise its probably 70% the power of a good corded Bosch, but fine on all but the most overgrown. Its heavy, but I can carry it. For Makita garden stuff it is typically better to get the 18v x 2 option. The 18v hedge trimmer is a toy compared with the 36v version, which is a beast.
Strimmer wise, i have a four stroke petrol makita which is brill, but if buying now i would get the 36v electric one.

Used to be implies there is a more productive gathering of opinionated diverse educated folk I can ask a completely random question to and get at least 30% quality answers (mixed in with the own it with bombers, why do you want that, here is what i have which is not relevant etc posts).
Is there a better mainly functional cluster of nowse?

The clinical bits may be, but current ideal is anywhere near Buccleuch Street. (Edinburgh south side).

Chickenman: it’s mainly lectures for them in year 2, so needs to be close to lecture halls rather than the (amazing) hospital.
So many lectures, so being close is key.

AMAP is not the same as MAR.
MAR is tax relief on the gap between AMAP and what the company actually pays you. It makes a big difference if doing a lot of business miles in you own car. Does require self assessment tax form, but really only takes an hour or two a year and saves a lot.

I do exactly this. Bought a 2013 V40 D3 in 2018 with 22k miles. Now on 80k and hope to run it for two more years.
Don’t forget to claim MAR if using your own car.

Rapidly coming to the conclusion that alongside Audi/VW/Skoda and having a gas BBQ that fountain pens are the other STW thing!
I don’t have the car, but do have a collection of Lamy pens. The studio is my go to at the moment, but the Lamy 2000 EF fountain pen coupled with a Moleskine hard notebook is the best combo ever.
This thread has also made me look at pens I have not done in a while and I am now looking at the current lamy range with expensive birthday urges.

I had a similar gripe with GoPro. 5 year old camera bricked by crap software updates. So they are on the companies to avoid list now. I compare with Canon and Nikon who support stuff for time periods measured in decades!

Big remain supporter here. But surely after last night we have to acknowledge the consensus is to leave. Breaks my heart how the turkeys vote for christmas but gobble gobble.

MAR for private owned company car drivers is a great help to running your own car, but understood by few.

We spend 10% of income between us on two cars. Feels like the most I would ever want to spend on motoring. One is an i3 that saves on running costs, the other a poor V40 D3 that had gone from 23000 to 66000 miles in under two years!

I bought a makita 4st petrol one a few years ago. Unlike every other petrol thing I own (Rhyobi hedge cutter discarded in disgust or Einhell rotavator that needs 95Ron straight into spark plug hole to start) the makita starts first time every time.

I voted Labour in 2017. Not because I backed Corbyn, but because I (mistakenly) thought Labour instead of Tory in my bit of Leeds at least made Brexit a bit less likely. The Brexit issue trumps and left/right debate for me at the moment. Corbyn is like a quantum partical, trying to occupy both states simultaneously. He is the main reason we don’t have an effective opposition in this country and he has to go ASAP. I would happily welcome a Corbyn government if they had a clear remain stance. His most extreme left wing projects would be unlikely to clear parliament, and policies like nationalising railways and student fees I would welcome.

Love STW advice!!! All good stuff and I think this is one of the rare times I have heard consensus on this forum! Well you put us off doing the NC500. I think instead we are going to do a 5 day trip and take in the west coast and I have a strong urge to visit the distillery in Campbeltown ever since seeing it on a BBC documentary. Will Check out some of the diversion suggestions…. lobster ans dolphins sounds great (though not both on a plate). Any other suggestions for a way up to the top and back down again? Things to see (more scenary, beaches) and places to stay and stop of for scran. Ta!

GHill: interesting… my son doing MMath dropped stats to do more pure. Hasn’t a clue (or at least not sharing) what he plans to do with the qualification, probably finance of some sort.

Just had my mums done. 3m x6m flat roof with no fiddly bits. Roofer stripped back to rafters. Lined with OSB, membrane, 50mm foam insulation, more OSB and topped with 425gsm fibreglass. That cost £1600. I also had new fascias and gutters done which added £380 to the job, so £1980 all in. I had another quote for £2400 for similar. So unless yours is fiddly then it sounds expensive.

Engineering would have appealed to me, but definitely not to daughter. She is more maths/bio etc than tensile strengths and gears. Her best mate however has been offered a place doing engineering at Durham! Fabulous to get more women into this area.

Yeah my son has one year of MMath to finish at York. Most of his school mates and house mates graduated this year, but he is looking forwards to his final year of obscure maths (cryptology and other esoteric stuff). Will leave daughter to mull things over! She is smart and will make a considered choice. I was more worried in case there was anything parents should be doing or asking. :-)

JoshVegas: fully agree that wrong choice is a big mistake and the switch from Med to Maths has happened over last two years, so not a sudden thing. Gap year is an option. Not even discussed that as a family (topic of admissions was parked till after exams and she only finished further maths paper three on monday and has been partying or asleep since then ;-)). Think will encourage her to contact a handful of Unis directly in next few weeks and maybe see if we can shoehorn in visits. :-)

We kinda know the implications of maths as our son has just finished YR3 of MMAth at York, and has gone down the pure rather than applied route. Not sure what we have done to breed two mathematicians, but we have! Son is now at the point where not only do I not know the answer, or even understand the answer once given, I cannot even understand the question!! Agree maths is a very specific calling, but with a range of pathways within. The year out thing could be an option, but that would mean she graduates two years after most of her mates (state school…gap years are not really a thing!).

To be fair Garry, I probably overplayed the Jeremy Hunt comment to fit around my own prejudices. It’s more than a pre result wobble. Has been building over last two years as she has had some amazing and inspiring maths teachers (state school in East Leeds) and has grown a tremendous passion and talent for maths! Any admissions tutors on here that can advise? Or general comments welcome :-).

I was wondering if she should contact faculties at shortlisted unis over next few weeks? Or wait?

Thanks for comments so far. The move away from medicine is her second wobble on choosing that career, so I think it’s sincere and considered. You are right we do need more docs! And if she chooses this I will be chuffed, but only if she is happy. I am sure she could transfer to Math at the same uni, but I think she would prefer another Uni altogether but for Maths…Durham, Warwick (not York, her brother is there!).

Thanks all. Have found a local guy who seems good. Full strip, moisture membrane, insulation boards and GRP 450gsm. I suspected that leaving old roof in place was just a lazy option, thanks for mainly confirming that!

Thanks for replies so far! Anyone advocating laying OSB and GRP on top of existing bitumen? To be fair the old roof is not a mushy mess, but at same time it does not feel right! Keep all advice coming. Ta!

Sincere and heartfelt love to your family. I have been following Mark’s and your family’s story for a decade and the dignity, grace and determination shown has been humbling. All the best for the future, and please be aware that for every muddy cyclist at the funeral, there will be another ten silently marking Marks passing as they go about their day. Love and Peace. Shaken by this. Chris was a top bloke. I have one of the very first Lumen Liberators and a mate at my then work supplied Chris with the CAD file for the light logo (Chris soon changed to a much nicer logo!). A genuine tinkerer and outright solid man. Yorkshire is a poorer place with his passing. Thoughts and condolences to family.

Sorry if my reply was a little curt earlier.
I came within hours of losing my mum to a subdural hematoma this week and seeing my family drop everything to be there for her brought home what is important. Mercifully the old dear is now staggering round LGI making inappropriate comments again, but earlier this week she was on her way out.
