Megasack Giveaway Day 13: Tailfin Bike Luggage Bundle

I would go the route of least wires.
First thing I did was make sure my master socket was near my TV, so that it’s easy to get the best speed internet to my living room.
Gigabit 5 and 8 port switches are only £10-£15 on Amazon.
So currently I have one of my ports on my SKY router feeding a 5 port router near the TV (SKY box, PS3 and IP Camera currently). Port 2 is directly to an outbuilding to a second gigabit switch with POE, this supplies Wifi switch in the garden, LAN in the outbuilding and more IP cameras. Port 2 on the SKY router is to a homeplug that takes internet upstairs to a homeplug on the bedroom TV and urchins internet.
Homeplugs are good, but proper network cable and switches is faster and more stable.CHBFull MemberI value both the sciences AND the arts. The arts are WHY life is worth living. The sciences are the tech to make it better and sustainable. Though I am an unashamed scientist/engineer, MrsHB combines science, music, drama (!)and art. We make sure our urchins appreciate both.
As an employer, I see far more candidates who can talk, but can’t calculate than I do students who can do, but can’t communicate. So for CV’s a good science/maths/core humanities wins out over some of the more “esoteric” subjects. But at the end of the day education is only worth what you can do with it, so if confidence and communication skills are zero then all the PhD’s in the world will not get you a job.CHBFull MemberNot tried with my partner, but I have a Kalkhof electric hybrid and it is EPIC! Perfect for commuting and nipping to the shops.
If I wanted an electric MTB I would get a Focus one from 50cycles.com as they use the best drive system on the market and the quality of the bikes are great.CHBFull MemberHmmm….not sure. voices are such a personal thing. One area where BBC have got it REALLY wrong recently is on Horizon. They had Jen from the IT Crowd narrate a recent episode that was about alternate universes. I just could not take her seriously. Sounded like Philomena Cunk. Ewan Mcgregor is good.
CHBFull MemberTrain fares in this country are a national disgrace. It’s one area of policy where I agree with Corbyn. Public transport should be a national asset and fares should be set to similar levels to those in the rest of Europe. Train travel in Holland is a joy and very affordable. As the country that invented rail travel we really should be ashamed of the shower of greedy and incompetent **** that we have in charge of the rail industry.
CHBFull MemberLSN coatings in Castleford are brilliant and cheap.
I have not had a frame done there, but I have had lots of wheels done there and every time I go there they have lots of motorcross and other frames in (not many cycles). They will powdercoat anything and are very good.CHBFull Member50337 …with modern calculators having dot matrix displays, the days of spending maths lessons trying to spell words upside down are dwindling.
CHBFull MemberNot much to add that has not already been said. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed your articles.
Cancer is a proper buggeration and the sooner we unpick it’s nasty little code and consign it to the history books like Polio and Rickets, the better as it’s interfering with the riding and drinking plans of too many people I care for these days!CHBFull MemberLobster is nice, but is poor value for money. We holidayed in Staithes near Whitby this year and because of the strikes at Calais a lot of the lobster that normally goes to the French market was being sold cheap in the area (whole lobster for £5). It’s a nice meat, but for the price in a restaurant I would rarely choose it.
CHBFull MemberLots of the really nice stuff is harvested in June/July/August.
Some early onions and garlic are good.
Salad and radishes are always good too.The weeds in year one can put off a lot of people. Personally I use glyphosphte weed killer (Rosate or similar). Glyphosphate kills the roots of weeds, but breaks down harmlessly on contact with soil.
Allotments are rewarding, and my view is that the £45 a year I pay is only what I would pay for one months gym membership…but with a whole year of workouts!
CHBFull MemberWe have the “old” XC90 and it’s the perfect family car for lugging and long trips. The new XC90 looks fabulous but it will be 2020 before I can justify one!
I do a lot of my own maintenance on cars and Volvo’s are well built and don’t skimp on things like corrosion treatment on bolts.
Looking at a V60 Polestar at somepoint.CHBFull Member5 Guys in Florida is a real treat and not too expensive.
£8 is the most I could ever pay for a burger…maybe £10 if it had sides and needed 2 two whole sides of Kobe beef to make it.CHBFull MemberSorry to hear your loss.
It very much depends on the family and circumstances whether any mirth or brevity is welcome, you will know.
I did both my fathers and grandfathers eulogy.
My advice would be to do it from the heart. People want to hear the 8-10things that made that person unique to the different members of the congregation. Did he have habits or particular sayings? Shared quirks where 10-20% of the congregation can say…yep thats him. And then for the next quirk or story another section of the audience will get the link is ideal.
It’s a big job, but see it as a celebration and not a commiseration and you will do fine. Good luck.CHBFull MemberJust done this in my own house. There is some confusing terminology going on here, let me explain.
You only ever need one router. Conected to this you might have multiple switches with CAT 5 or cat 6 connecting them.
Homeplugs are wired, they use your houses electrical circuit instead of CAT5 cable.
You can get homeplugs that act as wifi extensions. These give full speed wifi to the limit of your homeplug speed.
Wifi repeaters bridge wirelessly to act as an extender. These run slower than wired ones as they have to accept and transmit every signal that comes into them (doubling traffic on the wireless channel).
Wireless access points however are wired in with cat 5 and can act as an extension to your wifi giving full network speed.I bought two 5 port gigabit switches, a wireless access point and a reel of external at 6 (make sure its not CCA cable!).
Had wifi at the end of my garden for about £60.
CHBFull MemberSon got AS results. Did well, especially in maths and further maths. He seems re-invigorated for doing Maths at Durham.
His friends (mainly) did less well regrettably.
Teamhurt’s Rudyard imposters quote sums it up.If you try your best you will get what you are able to get, if you slack off then you will get what you deserve.
To the poster above who’s dad died: I was in a similar situation 20+ years ago and have since done OK. Losing your dad has an effect on you, sometimes this effect can come out years after your loss. Hope things go well.CHBFull MemberDidn’t the UK manufacture more cars in 2014 than anytime ever (passing the previous peak of the late 1970’s)?
As an owner of 3 Leyland cars (mini and two metro) I can say I am happy for them to go to the wall, never has a car rusted as much as BL crap.
National infrastructure should be national however, eg gas, electricity, water and rail. Though we have some of the cheapest energy prices in europe, our rail prices are a national disgrace.CHBFull MemberIDS tyres based in Halifax. I normally use Ian, even though I live in Leeds. Mobile fitting, great service and competetive prices.
CHBFull MemberYeah, I thought “M” too to represent the housing of a typical daytime TV watcher.
CHBFull MemberHad it a few days now. Generally like it. Edge browser has lots of issues…Ebay and my work remote email don’t fully work on it.
CHBFull MemberAbsolute nonsense to object to the word in this context. Not a huge fan of CMD, but this is nitpicking in the extreme.
Thought David Davies came closer…what we need is camps…erm not bad ones, good ones. He skated on very thin PC ice by talking about camps and people that we don’t want in our country…R4 classic!!CHBFull MemberAmazon drivers have our house preloaded as a regular destination in their satnavs, we use them LOTS. Glad that after a few years of nothing worth watching on prime that they are finally getting my favourite TV trio.
CHBFull MemberHardcastle crags (try the eccles cakes and curd tart…best in England).
Billybobs for icecream and lovely burgers.
The limestone pavement at Malham…weekend done!
CHBFull MemberIn my experience…light bike and comfy woman specific saddle and some kind of front suspension are the main things that Mrs HB cares about.
For the kids it’s ease of changing gears and good brakes…oh and again a light bike.CHBFull MemberCoop are the most confusing retailer I can think of. Prices higher than Waitrose and own label products of worse quality/lower specification than Asda’s basic range.
With a Lidl down the road that is 30% cheaper and better for food I really can’t see the point.CHBFull MemberGenerally I have seen unions cause more damage than they solve…selfish short term gains have killed a few companies I have dealt with. However for those in public sector I understand why you would join a union as the government has no loyalty or pragmatism in negotiations generally, as found out recently by a family member who works for UK border force (redundant).
CHBFull MemberSome good bit’s in the budget. Increase min wage and capping family credit at two kids makes sense. The betrayal of higher education continues and I do fear that smart poor kids will increasingly see it as a luxury they cannot afford. Tertiary education for the smart should be based on talent, not willingness to take on huge debt or well off parents. Tertiary education should be paid for by an extra 1p or whatever on 40% tax payers as that’s the fairest way of covering the cost of a high skill knowledge based economy.
CHBFull MemberGreat city, and getting better every year. You do need to take local advice on where to live as half a mile can make a big difference in desirability! Most areas of Leeds have nice bits and naff bits and some really expensive areas are only a few streets away from some absolute grot. Personally I like the bit of South Leeds I live in, it has great motorway links and is 10mins away from Leeds centre by train (or 6 miles along the canal). Leeds Uni is good too (I studied there and keep in touch with my old faculty). Good levels of research and a vibrant feel.
CHBFull Memberjivehoneyjive has it…but with less sunshine, more drool and bigger jowls. ;-)
CHBFull MemberYou guys are amazing…yes it was a Spyker C8.
I was right behind it so couldn’t see the side very well.
Despite driving as close as I dare without backending it I could not see the brand name.
:-)CHBFull MemberMakita LXT 18V here. Have a few of their tools and two batteries. The naked tools can be bought for very little money from places such as FFX. I always find screwfix to be expensive for Makita.
CHBFull Memberdoh….where is that? We are all after places to view this magnificent aircraft!
CHBFull MemberHoping to see this saturday. Does anyone know the take off direction from Doncaster? I would either go and see it somewhere near Doncaster or somewhere near York. Any knowledge gratefully received? The fact it gets from Doncaster to Scarborough in 23 minutes means it will be moving at speed. (bit excited!!!).
CHBFull MemberMy favourite is taking a famously frugal mate to a disability bike exhibition at Dalby about 8 years ago. He ended up ordering a £3500 Hase recumbent (with Rohloff!). This in itself is not the story. He then recieves the HASE and realise it doesn’t fit in a VW Golf motability car. So he has to trade up to a big Volvo estate to fit it in. That was a good day helping others spend their money.
