  • Mintel predicts £1 billion new bike sales this year

I think it would be great if they offered to sell them at a range of common leg lengths. Getting them taken up will cost an extra tenner (and that’s at Leeds Market), and I always worry especially with jeans that they are never as good as the original factory finish.

Admissions at Durham said that they get approx. 600+ applicants, make around 300 offers for approx. 120 places. They offer and reject end of feb/early march, but then hold a few second reserve offers back for a second wave of offers in may/june.

Sons first choice is MMath at Durham, but it needs A*AA and that’s IF you get an offer. Durham looks lovely. York is nice too, but as we live in Leeds it might be a tad too close.

Great idea. British made with passion. God knows that Hebden Bridge needs help after the floods this year. Wish they came pre taken up, I think that’s a mistake as it will add cost to buying them. Standard 32″ inside leg here. :-) Think I will treat myself to a pair.

It’s maths that he is looking to do (Durham, Edinburgh or York are top three). So info that York didn’t interview for maths recently is interesting!
Think he is set on smart casual. From the views above he ought to be OK. Thanks for all your help.

As a chunky 14+ stone bloke who often needs decelerating, I have never struggled with my 2002 vintage Hope Mini brakes (I have monos on my other bike from 2006).

The whole “be strong” driver is something that I have seen cause falls in people. As said above they keep functioning to a certain point in time then blow a fuse and collapse. This is a sign that you CARE not that you are RUBBISH. The fuse blowing is because you are carrying too much stuff (CURRENT?) and the reason for this is because people or the company know that normally you can carry it. Blowing this fuse is not a weakness, but a safety valve.
I have felt this personally from time to time, but hope I am aware of my own limits and I try to keep things in perspective. We are all human and we all have levers and buttons that make us soar or make us crash to earth. Hope your wife finds the balance she needs.

It can be incredibly hard work, and very sad to see the mental degradation that dementia can cause. Our next door neighbour died last month after two years of rapid onset dementia. To see this crossword devouring, witty man decline so quickly was really sad. As neighbours and friends we helped out (helping him turn his TV on several times a week as he kept switching it to Analogue after the signal went 100% digital).

At many schools the more academic pupils end up doing triple rather than double science. So doing triple science can be a way of ensuring you are in a class of more able pupils.

The existing cats have been fine. We had a few weeks where they re-established boundaries, but now they broadly get along fine. The big fluffy one just sleeps on the bed all day and struts around like a drugged up Joanna Lumley. The other new one (sat on the cushion) is a bit nervous, but is an absolute gannet for food. He hates being picked up, but loves to sit on a lap! Higgins (emerging from suitcase) we got as a kitten from Claraby Cats and he is just a big bumbling oaf, but soft as anything.

More British Blue love in, we have four now!
(Bought two kittens and then last year was asked if we could “help” rehome another two.

Very good natured and chilled cats!

With two urchins (one in YR13 and one in YR10) this is something very fresh for us! For bright pupils I would say stick to GCSE rather than vocational of BTEC courses. Make sure he does proper triple science and not the watered down double science.
Our school offers a choice of Geography or History, both are respected subjects. RE is a good course to top up the number of GCSE’s.
I would say that anything 9 and above is gravy. Much better to get a good set of A’s and A*’s (or grade 1 in the new ones…at least I think 1 is good, rather than 9?) rather than a larger number of B grades in other subjects.
At GCSE it is good to do at least one or two subjects that won’t be progressed at A-level, but will show a rounded skill set. eg my son is looking to do maths and science, but he has good gcse grades in Music and Drama and RE.
Universities really only care about A-levels. My son has applied this year and all the Uni cares about is whether he can get A*AA at A Level.

I once asked DC a straightforward question about whether the proposed tuition fee increase betrayed poorer potential students.
Instead of answering the question he spouted off about the numbers of black students entering Oxbridge. It made the 10pm news. Since then I have watched him dodge and manipulate his answers for the last 6 years. He is a good performer, but he lost my respect.

Good post, well done. Other than your to$$er ex boss who now has more time to spend in the Bahamas, I reckon the Environment Agency deserves a lot more credit than it gets.

Too business/results focussed for a role in public sector. Got turned down as they thought I would get frustrated by the slow pace and paper shuffling they have to deal with.

Embers Merino are the best merino product I have ever bought. Feel sorry for the company however as the kit is so good that it has lasted several years and so they have not had much recent custom from me! I make up for it by giving them a mention whenever anyone asks about quality merino.

I have a brand new (unused with tags) Altura Morph if interested. Will do for £10 less than whatever the current wiggle/CRC etc price is. I bought it with the Ortlieb panniers, but have never used as the Ortlieb are so good!

Ortlieb panniers for sure. I have a pair and they are amazing quality. Can’t recommend a rack as my bike has it integrated, but Tubus are supposed to be the best.

Makita from the like of FFX or Toolstop if you want a drill to keep for years. Some really good 18V deals with battery, drill, case, charger. ( I am a big Makita fan, and once you have a charger and battery, you can buy the bare tools for very sensible prices.)
If you just want it for very occasional use then something from Lidl or Aldi with a 3 year warranty will be OK.

Historically there were two: Victorinox and Wenger that have some right to call themselves “swiss army knife”.
For <£50 I would just buy a Swiss Champ from Amazon for about £45.
The Victorinox lock knives are good too, but a Swiss Champ is the best value knife out there.

Actually, I am not sure as a tax payer I would want Apple to do prisons. I am sure their small jails would be cheap, but if you wanted a prison with more storage capacity I bet the price of it would be unjustifiably high.

And Apple prisons too for those who FaceTime.

This question keeps coming up, and though some of the replies above cover my views, this wouldn’t be STW if people didn’t pile on their own opinions.
Science if freekin cool. Though the cutting edge of space travel may not benefit us today, as a species we need to look to the stars. As a planet we need to understand our place in the cosmos. This is what makes us human, we look beyond our basic needs and act on curiosity. This curiosity and need to be more than we are today is what makes us special as a species, otherwise we are just monkeys with clothes on.

As someone who cried as a 4 year old at the FIRST star wars in 1977, I say take him.
There are a few semi-violent bits, but nothing excessive.
The 7 year old brat sat next to me got bored and decided to play with the packet from his popcorn until his father took it off him.
I thought the film was fantastic.

I admire the history of mining and the people and communities that embody the industry, but I am not sad to see it go.
I live in an ex coal mining area and it has taken 25 years for these areas to truly start to bounce back from the loss of mining. Now that they are recovering I have to say they are better places.

I work with printers. If they mess about with artwork without being asked then they get into a world of trouble! Most printers will just print the image as sent with zero adjustments as this is what any professional client would require. If you want the image retouching or resizing then you need a designer and repro company.

If you have an Amefa/Richardson Sheffield outlet near you then I really recommend a Midori Santoku knife.

You can pick them up for about £60.

Engine oil flushing is one thing I would never do. If you have ever added a small amount of WD40 (ie thin aggressive solvent) to a bike chain then you will see how little thin oil it takes to massively change a thicker oil. Flushing oils might be great for cleaning engines, but I worry about the 5% that remains even after a thorough drain. So I just change the oil at regular intervals instead and never flush. Petrol additives I am less than convinced about. My FSI has had injector problems this year and injector cleaner made zero difference.
