Four months ago things looked stable. Two weeks ago I thought things had hit their low point. Then Teresa announced march for Brexit and since then our currency has hit lows I never thought possible. Can it go lower?? I don’t see how, but I also would not rule it out. We are (yep…still are, just) a key part of and a stabiliser of Europe. We have announces we are taking our bat and ball home. I think we will look back on late 2016 as the calm before the storm. :-( Not happy. So get your currency whenever, it’s not likely to get much better or worse for any particular reason in the days ahead.

Twisty has it right. A bottom of the range Nikon (or Canon) DSLR with APS size sensor and a reasonable zoom lens. My daughter has a Nikon D3300 and its an amazing camera for the money. Add on a top lens and it takes pics nearly as good as my D610. DSLR has the shutter speed and with more pixels you have the ability to crop the image (I guess that’s like post shooting digital zoom!).

Son starts at York tomorrow! Tuition fees will be his. Most of his bottom tier loan will be for accommodation. We will top up where we can, but he will need to get a job to top up income.

Have ( and using now) a Pro 4. Absolutely love it. Had a Pro 1 before it that bricked prematurely. Microsoft replaced with a Pro 3 but not before I had already bought the Pro 4!!!
Son now has a pro 3 to take to uni!
As an aside, if anyone wants a pro 1 genuine Microsoft charge cable/pack for £15 delivered then let me know….found it last week!

In twisted Monty Python style, is that a Brown Rat (Ratus Norvegicus) or Black Rat (Ratus Ratus). Don’t even get me started on European Swallows.

@wobbliscott : If you think global warming has not killed anyone yet then have a look at the war in Darfur which was driven by water shortages. There are regions of the world that are going to suffer lots of desertification over the coming few decades driven by climate change. And yes, before the inevitable denial comes in, the climate has always changed and areas that were once ocean are now your back garden, but the PACE of change in the past 100 years is driven by fossil fuels and population growth.

Electricity generation in the UK is changing and fossil fuels are on the way out, gradually!
Once we have enough electric cars plugged into smart meters we will be able to store renewable energy and supply it back to the grid in peak demand, then recharge overnight.

Should add, that after 10 years of being a fuel efficient petrol owner (Audi A2) I have just made the switch to EV and am amazed!

Nope, I have travelled much, but love my native Leeds. Easy links to everywhere, good living and on the doorstep of one of the worlds most beautiful regions. Many places have better weather, better wealth, beter transport and photographic beauty, but as a place to live and travel from then Leeds has a lot of advantages, and as a city that was at the centre of our industrial revolution I believe we can take our country screaming into a profitable and enjoyable 21st century.

This is a dreadful thread with regretful grammar. Therefore I shall have not part of it. (Returns to my bottle of 2007 Clos des Menuts for comfort).

Bite the bullet and get a Makita LXT 18V from FFX or Toolstop. I did and now have several LXT bare tools to go with it. The quality is a big step up from Bosch, and the price not a huge step up!!

If folk want to start new threads then that’s cool. If all you want to read about is XT gear ratios then there is the bike forum. For “chat” I can’t think of anything else on anyones mind at the moment other than football and the EU mess we have stirred up. Please mods, don’t close or merge threads. Threads with no energy dry up due to lack of contributions. Trust in natural selection of threads to pick the ones that will stay on the front page.

Crikey, this looks close! lots of folk (myself included) surrounded by IN voters, but there are a lot voting OUT in other areas.

    Thanks for re-opening Drac.
For me, most folk I know are IN.
But there are some folk (two in particular) that I know, are travelled and educated that are firm OUT voters.
It’s is a tough call to make on voting and depends on how you see the world. For me the countries that make up the EU are more similar to how I want to see the world than any other region on our planet. The EU is big enough to set standards that will hold across the globe. In a world of global companies then the EU has a better track record of holding these companies to account than our own country. So I am voting in, and so are 80% of the people I speak to, but I realise that I speak to a small section of our country so am interested to hear the national spread!

Drac: We have a perfectly good report post system for any posts that offend. I really don’t see the role of Mods as determining what threads are superfluous or too similar to existing threads. If we go down that route then we will have one thread for 29ers, one thread for hating certain online etailers and one for Jamalaya etc to rant on. Not normally one to criticise mods as I know it’s a thankless task (an I won’t post more after this), but I do think that STW “report” system is the best for weeding out threads that need deleting, not the personal preferences of mods.

EDIT: just (belatedly!) noticed the other thread reopened. Thanks for doing this. As said, I don’t envy the job of mod, but hope my challenge was taken in good spirit :-)

Drac….WTF? Closing a perfectly good thread that had not descended into the normal mess? Not good use of thread closure.

Most car manufacturers do not make their own parts, specialist companies do. So for bearings if they are made by the likes of SKF or FAG then they will be every bit as good as genuine.
For filters Bosch, Hengst or Mahle are common OEM producers. Ferodo make brakes for Porsche, VW and others etc etc. Basically if you buy from a reputable OEM producer then the parts will be OK.

Such sad news and disturbingly local to me. All I can say is that my thoughts go to the family. No matter what your politics, we do not do this crap in our country.

ah…that’s where you failed. Keep it 95% tidy, but always have a bit of superficial detritus lying round. That way you can always find what you need, but don’t set unrealistic expectations.

Daftvader has a real talent for excellent ironmongery in it’s most elaborate form. After his last post a few months ago I approached him to make something for me. A few knowledgeable emails later and this arrives in the post….

The handle is a lovely piece of walnut.

For the benefit of Drac etc. These were not being offered for sale when I emailed. But he agreed to make one for me. I suspect as more folk see his amazing work that it will become trading as the quality is fantastic and the prices sensible for the hours of work that go into each one. STW is a fantastic hub for UK manufacture, whether it be Troutlights, HebTroCo or sharp pointy things. Hope the moderators can support these fledgling artisans in their early days.

Wow, some great suggestions. I won’t buy a car/not buy a car because of a certain stereo, but I want to have a test CD so that I can see whether (for example) it’s worth paying extra on a BMW i3 for the upgraded sound system. Keep you tracks coming as this could be a in car play list!!

I have some external CAT6 cable on a reel that I used for the run to my garage. But then you need terminal tools to fit the ends. If buying premade cables then you need to make some big holes in the wall if you need to feed the connectors through. Much easier to thread through the naked ends and then terminate them in situ.
If you want cable and a few ends then I am happy to send/sell at cost+postage. You would need to buy your own £10 crimp tool.
Make sure any cables you buy are full copper and not something called CCA (copper clad alu).
