Drill some holes in the stump and pour in white spirit. That's the advice I got from a gardener – but I don't know how long it takes to kill it…someone will tell you in a second – probably.

That will kill the stumps comparatively quickly. What it won't do is rot the stumps, so they will stay there until nature takes it's course and the wood just decays. 7/10 years depending on the hardness of the wood. Stump grinder is still the easiest way.

I never said he was but as he hasn't been caught and hasn't broken the whereabouts rules to our knowledge therefore he is the winner. Whether I think he is clean or not is another matter.

Marion Jones said the same thing. Is she out of jail yet?

I've got some too; don't think travel can be changed.

My sister was made redundant at the end of June. Yesterday she was offered a new job and she'll have more money than she had before. Lucky maybe, but she got her finger out and found a job that hadn't even been advertised.

I'm in NT and go to Lakes a lot. Saves a fortune over council run car parks, and I know the funds are not just being frittered on some local council politically correct spendathon.

    ^^^^^^What the man said.

A tip with M&S. When you get your renewal, go online and get a quote for a new policy. It will be much cheaper. Then ring them up with details of the quote and they'll reduce your renewal to that level. I saved £130 on my renewal by doing that.

I'm planning a trip down there in the next couple of weeks, when/if it stops raining. I've got a couple of routes on Memory Map you can have, but they are in the 25/30 mile range. Mail me if you're interested.

I usually ride alone, and carry my phone and wallet. Wallet has credit cards, business cards and various club membership cards all of which would identify me.

There's an audio presentation of Wilfred Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est" in the Ypres museum. Tear jerking. Even the teenagers, and there were plenty about were silenced by it. It was good to see so many young folk, of all nationalities going round; education will hopefully stop a repetition.

They have a bat house in Chester Zoo. The lighting is very subdued, some form of blue, and the bats are flying around all the time. They fly right at you and only move away at the last minute. Spooky at first, but once you get used to it it's a great experience. Big things they are – fruit bats I think.

We were all going to die of SARS. NHS was put on an emergency footing and we were all given dire warnings about how to behave to minimise the risk to ourselves. Nothing happened.

Earlier this year we were told that we would be having the mother and father of all heatwaves this summer. Everyone was going to be dropping dead form heat exhaustion, and anyone over 60 might as well book their burial plot. NHS was put on an emergency footing and we were all given dire warnings about how to behave to minimise the risk to ourselves. Nothing happened.

Now we've got swine flu. If the new helpline was receiving 2000 hits per second, then everyone in the country must already have swine flu. NHS has been put on an emergency footing and we've all been given dire warnings about how to behave to minimise the risk to ourselves.

    Spot a trend here?

I'm sure I've been to that second landscape one. Is it Locarno?

Went to Paschendaele/Ypres a couple of weeks ago. It's a very sobering place. It's little wonder that those who survived didn't speak much about it, my grandfather included. We all owe an enormous debt to Harry Patch and the others.

Tyne Cot cemetery has a wall with approx 30,000 names carved into it, and the Menin Gate in Ypres has more than twice that number. Every name represents a soldier with no known grave. And The Somme is worse. Hopefully nothing like that will ever happen again.

But they won't have any sort of guarantee, will they?
    ??

    Of course they will

How? Guarantee goes to original purchaser doesn't it?

Would you replace the foam and other padding as well? If so I'd have a look at that.

ChatsworthMusters for your info,I think some of the the path/Road/ Bridleways are closed on the eastern side of the lakeshore, should be ok further up onto Claife though. [/quote]

Thanks for that, my route is not exactly "kosher", but does have good views of the lake for most of the day. However if the Vulcan is only coming at 17:00 then I'll be long gone by then.

Chasing the Vulcan looks more promising than what I had planned, so if anyone wants a ride over Claife, be at Biketreks at 9AM. Will be on both Jenkin Crag and Claife at some point. Bring some money, there's a ferry crossing involved. We should be right under it.

There is another route, which I've also done, possibly slightly easier, which you might use for the way back

That's possibly the hardest single day's ride in the Lake District.

OS maps can be bought directly from the OS website, and delivery is usually quicker than Amazon. Get the waterproof ones – Active Maps they are called.

Garstang in Lancashire. Bang on M6 so handy for Lakes, and not as expensive or full of trippers as Lakes. Handy for Dales/Peak/Pennines. Good rail & road connections to Preston/Manchester.

    And it's not in Yorkshire.

We might take Stephen Roche seriously if he came clean about the drug taking during his Tour/Giro/World Champ year.

Stumpyjon, many thanks. Received and read. Think I'll probably start it from Hurstwood, which is easy to get to for me. Clockwise looks best.

While we're on the subject, has anyone got a GPX file for the route? (Sorry if this is a hijack)

If you want to have your number(s) marked as ex-directory, you can elect to have your number removed by visiting the following web site http://www.118800.co.uk/removeme/remove.html and following the simple instructions given. Simply complete the on-line form and have your mobile with you and when you get the text with the 5 digit code, enter it straight away and you will then be advised that you have been made ex-directory.

That service is suspended. Wonder if that's because too many wanted to use it?

I hope you don't mind me looking at your legs, but they looked pretty badly bitten on Saturday. I was bitten by several horse flies, and they itch like **** at present.

a bacon buttie and Mrs Flashs delicious Blueberry, raspberry and lime drizzle cake.

Wish I'd come with you. Made it back OK, but after 35 miles and 5,500' of climbing I was asleep most of the night. Went to bed nearly sober 😥
