Sorry boys, you'll have to count me out. My little four year old has died today. Might not be around for a while.

Also I wonder how the family of the dead policeman will manage, feel as thoufh I should be doing something.

They will be well looked after. Polis are very good when death "In service" happens.

Can't help feeling that a small number of bits of Gisburn are designed purely as an obstacle course. I'm thinking of the approach to the highest bit. (That's the second section after the pub) There was a complaint on here last week that rocks were being bypassed. I had a good look on Saturday and it's true they are. But, the rocks just seem to have been dropped on the trail in the hope that we will ride them. Doesn't seem very well thought out. Also, there are a few sections of rock garden which completely knock your speed, then there is an upwards slanting rock, with a drop off at the top. Speed is needed to ride the rock/drop off section, but speed has been lost on the approach. It may be OK for mtb gods, but most of us are just ordinary blokes.

If one is allowed to criticise the course designer – this style has been seen in other trails that he's designed. I get the feeling that too much is being crammed into too short a stretch, then the rest of the course is comparatively "easy". The staircase on the bottom loop is excellent, as is much of the sweeping singletrack . Of course it's an XC course, but to my uneducated eye it looks as if the top loop has taken the bulk of the funding, and everything else has suffered for it.

I'm left with the feeling that this trail has been designed to fit nicely on a CV somewhere. Good bits to show off to prospective clients, but large bits are there just to make up the distance.

I'm available for public execution on Thursday morning!!!

    even more fiendish log rides

The one that you're building looks quite fiendish enough for me. Don't have a clue how to do the drop off, on a corner from the top tree to the bottom one. Might chicken out of that bit.

I use spds and can't ride if I'm not clipped in. Gives so much more feel of being in control than flats ever can. Don't worry about being stuck to the bike if you come off – they are designed to release. I've come off several times, and never yet had a problem of remaining fixed to the bike – it simply don't happen.

Saw your van there yesterday Ed. Didn't see you hacking those trees into logs though. They are massive!!!

Maybe I was OTT but why should folk feel able to build jumps and trails without permission – especially in working forests.

Don't often agree with you, but this time I think you are spot on.

Think that tag might be construed as objectionable.

Why are you asking a UK based forum what is acceptable in Germany? Seems a stupid question.

I use the compass screen, and as long as it's pointing dead ahead I know I'm right. If it points to the side then I need to turn. Simple really, as long as the plotting on the map is accurate!!!

I had something similar last week. We – by that I mean Peter next door – finished up by wiping every single thing from the hard drive using some special utility he downloaded from somewhere. Hard drive had nothing at all on it. Had to rebuild from scratch, re partition, install all the hidden techy bits that only anoraks know about, then put all the drivers back on. Only then could Windows go back on. Seems like hard drive had become corrupted way down deep in the works. Peter reckoned that a repair shop would have just ditched the drive and sold me a new one. Saved me a small fortune. In fact if it had gone to a shop it would probably have been more economical to ditch it and buy a new one.

You could do with finding a Peter!!!

Listen to abductee. He knows his stuff.

best for off-road? The Topo maps (But they're not up to OS map standard)

Must disagree. The talkytoaster maps in abductees post are far superior to TOPO. So good in fact, that I've got the North of England TOPO maps sat here, on a card, looking for a good home.

How long does it take to get round?

2.5 hours should be enough, depending how long you spend talking/sessioning.

I use a Legend on every ride. BUT>>>they are not like in car sat navs. They will not just navigate you. You have to plot/import your intended route before you set off, then they will tell you how to follow this. I use Memory Map for this, but there are lots of other systems out there, a lot of which would be better left in Disneyland!!!

If you cannot plot a route on a map then you'll have difficulty with a Legend, or any of the other similar devices. You cannot just put in a destination and be directed there. They do not come with built in maps, and you cannot put OS maps on them. Bodges do exist, with varying degrees of usefulness.

They are a completely different item from an in car Satnav, and are also completely different form a PC/laptop. You'll have to learn new skills. I love mine, and wouldn't leave home without it, but there is a skill to using it.

Hope I've not put you off!!!

IIRC the credit card company will refund if you've not had delivery within 45 days of the entry. Give them a ring, waht have you got to lose?

I've got the same problems, so it's going to be Gisburn for me.

They have a habit of taking money from credit cards as soon as the order is placed. From what I can remember they are not supposed to charge you until they are sending the item out. I got my money refunded through my credit card company, seeing as Bonthrone wouldn't respond.

Contact Trading Standards in Windsor. They are doing a big investigation into this company. Don't hold your breath about getting any sort of response from Bonthrone – you won't get one.

We must pass each other regularly, but how often do we stop other than at a gate. All we give/get is a nod of the head as we cross. There used to be a guy on here who made a point of not speaking to anyone. He even rode straight past a guy with a mechanical without enquiring if any help was needed. Mind you he did ride an On One singlespeed.

(He might still be on here under a new name, after he got shamed away.)

It rains in the North. We live with it. It's called winter. Then in July it rains some more. That's called summer.

Won't feature on the 6 O'Clock news. Too far from Lunnun.

Why were they using a crane to lift the tree over the house? Why didn't they just bacon slice it? They can't have been wanting to use it for timber as it's got a massive bend in it.

I was in Grizedale on Sunday and thought it was OK. Not much standing water. Lakes is rock, so it all drains quite quickly.

Also rode through Rydal Water, and my wheels were completely under water!!!

I once had my freehub pawls pack up, so no drive. I took the front mech cable and ran it between the spokes, and through the holes in the gear block. Could pedal quite nicely – chain was effectively pulling the spokes, which moved the wheel. Only trouble was this gave me a fix gear bike, and as I was half way to Tan Hill at the time it wasn't the easiest of rides back, especially down some of those hills. I finished up getting a lift back to Kirkby Stephen on the back of a tractor pulling a flat bed trailer.
