Because there’s no evidence for it other than circumstance

Ok, so we have lots of that and we can’t draw the inference?

I just don’t get how you don’t see that we are living in a patriarchal society

Ok, I’ll take your word for it. You’ve still failed to provide an example of anything that needs changing, which suggests to me they’ve got it right.

You can’t do both those things.
But for what it’s worth things may have changed considerably since i was last busy here, but i would often see racist / xenophobic comments here and either get caught in discussion with mods or report it, only to have the comments stand, excused by weasel words.
I really have no desire to search through post to find examples of offensive terminology just to get caught up in semantic arguments or excuses.

You haven’t provided any examples. Find me something racist, I’ll report it, I bet it’s gone by tomorrow.

It’s been a while, but it wasn’t when i reported it. Perhaps you have more influence

I’m all in favour of that. Abuse is wrong and should be reported and removed. I think you’d be hard pushed to find instances of reported abuse that haven’t been removed. Maybe we’re all a bit slow in reporting stuff.

    lots of the racism stuff
    abusive terminology, abusive language

Why not? What new rule would you suggest?

I would suggest the following is more clearly defined as a rule rather than an ethos

The ethos of this forum must be one of mutual respect for everyone who uses it.

    and some clearer operationalisaton of

when the argument becomes heated or abuse begins to creep in, then you will have crossed the line. If you don’t step back from it then you will likely be moderated.

which appears to allow abuse, so long you step back. Also, why only ‘likely’?

Yesterday there was a hoo-hah about the use of an offensive word. When I was young you would hear that word daily, it has taken decades for that change.

    where was that?

    CharlieMungus

If people see posts that are personal, abusive or break the rules we all need to hit the report button.

how about a reconsideration of the rules?

Why should it be upon the forum to work out what it needs to do? , have comments been made directly to yourself ?

The list of excuses and justifications from those who perpetuate these microaggressions, in race, in gender identity , in sexual orientation is long and you can never tie them down. There is always a loophole of some sort which turns the offence back on the the offended or the complainant. Not coincidentally, the perpetrators are often straight white males who enjoy a privileged position sin society, for whom the greatest discrimination experienced is to be called privileged.
I spent a lot of effort on here calling out racism or cultural insensitivity when i saw it, not once do i remember anyone recognising that what they said might not be OK, and only once did someone accept that they might change their behaviour in certain circumstances. The mods have not been supportive on occasion posting racially insensitive material themselves.

I think they do mean quite different things.

Could you please… Has an air of impatience and expectation, whereas Please could you… Sounds more like a request.

For the times, the British Empire was on the benign end of Imperialism.

Yes! they were very kind, especially that Briggs fella, giving all those funny foreign chaps ‘new villages’ to live in!

Amazing to think Wende Cragg was part of the group that invented mountain biking. Such a wonderfully talented person, really at the height of their talents back then too. Gives you butterflies just thinking about it

A man goes to his doctor because he has a lettuce sticking out of his backside.

“That looks nasty” says the doctor.

    “It’s the tip-off the iceberg”

“Don’t worry says” the doctor “I’ll put a dressing on it”

Go to mediation. They will help you work out all the things you need to work out and put something in writing which will be supportive if you ever need to go to lawyers.

Depends on use, if really to be used as a portable and carried around everyday, go for the latitude range. Just much more robust.

Have any of you, amongst all the hyperbole, mentioned that so long as a child receives love and meaningful attention from their ‘parents’, be they biological or otherwise, then there is every chance they will grow with a fully developed emotional intelligence?

I think we have, unfortunately, chance is all there is and their circumstances prior to that love and attention have a massive impact on those chances.

trying to engineer a situation where all genders are represented equally in all aspects of society, work or culture is a nonsense.

true, but not so with sexes

But then I’m not sure what relevance non-binary gender has in a debate about the importance of gender equality in society? I guess you could start argue that we should stop worrying about gender altogether and as a society ignore it as irrelevant.

The issue us if you see gender as binary, then you can see male and female behaviour (no matter the sex of the person). The idea of ‘things girls do’ or ‘things boys do’ really seems quite dated nowadays.
If, in fact you see gender as a diversity of identities, without polarisation, so not even a spectrum. Then the idea of equal representation is meaningless. It’s like asking for equal representation if personality. Gender is not a simple unitary concept. And it is not just a very small number of people who see it that way. Once you recognise gender for what it is, the idea of maternal or paternal roles become meaningless. The way in which you are a ‘man’ to your kids might be very different to the way in which I am a ‘man’ to my kids and there might be huge overlaps between those behaviours and the behaviours of their mothers, your ‘male/female roles’ might be orthogonal to mine. It’s just people.

My point is that I feel strongly that as a society, we should regard the gender roles played by mothers and fathers as equally important and equally demanding of representation.

So, just to clarify for me, from this and your earlier response, you only recognise 2 gender identities?

Geetee, can you clarify what you mean about equal representation of gender roles? Start with how many there are, if they can be counted.

Oh an do show us your website. I would respond to you original reply, but it seems a bit mixed up

Think what you like, I am done with this witch hunt. I don’t know how many times I can say the same thing. I have no issue with same sex couples, or same sex couples being parents.

The number of times you need to say the same.thing depends on the number of times you say and do things completely contrary to what you say. Nevertheless, I’m glad you are done with. Take those small minded views masquerading as intellectual inquiry and be gone

    Not what I said.

Gonna have to face it, You made some large off topic comments

    CharlieMungus

I started off by questioning who might be the biological father (it was meant to be tongue in cheek)

And there is the give away. For most, there is nothing humourous or giggleworthy or ‘wink wink’ or strange that would warrant a ‘tounge in cheek’ comment.

An idiot might take that comment to mean you have an issue with two guys bringing up a child together.

You start off by questioning a guy’s parenthood, followed by questioning same sex parenting and now someone else is the idiot?

So…trailwagger, is Tom going to be a dad?

    CharlieMungus

If you bothered to read anything else in the thread, you will see that I have no problem with same sex parents

I did, the first thing you asked for was a debate on the ins and outs of same sex parenting.

If your issue was surrogacy, you should have asked that question.

    CharlieMungus

And maybe bigotry is bandied about too much, but to question whether or not Daley can be a dad, just because he is in a same sex relationship? Pretty clear case of it there!
