Think that could work to stop a jersey / jacket riding up?  got a couple that I feel I have to tug down at the back a lot so I was thinking a bit of silicone along the inner hem at the back and perhaps even some on the back of the bib shorts / baggies where they overlap.

I don’t remember seeing gates but have often confused fences with things like power lines.

Anyway the legend/key is here if that helps identify what line is meant to be what.  Of course all subject to whatever the local contributor(s) specified when they edited the map.

Sub-zero gloves = Aldi lobster mitts.  Otherwise I chuck some oversize Buffalo mitts in the bumbag if I’m hoping to get away with thinner gloves and need a get-you-home option if they get soaked or it’s colder than expected.

How much for the gold plated version, asking for a friend.

How is Remco?  Everyone sitting on his wheel might appreciate them

I’m running a 52-34 on the front with no issues found although i’m old school in backing off the pressure when changing.  That’s Ultegra rather than Tiagra but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work ok.  Not a huge difference but does help a little.

Last Tuesday night ride. One of use has a puncture.

None of the four of us can see it to fix it.

This is where the triple-click on the phone to get the magnifying glass is handy.  Been there before.

Though I like the sound of the safety specs with a little halfmoon in the bottom for viewing the garmin/phone/etc.  Any specific recommendations? Found these on toolstation:

Does she like aeroplanes or double-decker buses?

The Bournemouth Aviation Museum is a bargain and more to the point you get to sit in the cockpits, pretend to fly, sit in the bus drivers seat and pretend to sell tickets, drive, dress up as a pilot / cabin crew, etc.  My kids spent hours there just wandering around doing stuff. Nice bunch of old boys run the place always happy to have a chat and explain things as well.

I went for a ‘narrow-wide’ chainring when I went from 3x to 1x. You’re losing the front derrailleur and in the process losing a chain retention device so the narrow-wide teeth help grip the chain better. Not vital I expect but definitely help.

I think the Pros themselves still take some pride in winning the road race.

Wasn’t Carapaz was riding his gold bike in the TdF?  Fairly sure I saw it though it didn’t stand out much.

Greg Van Avermaet even more so with plenty of gold on his helmet and gold stem/bars iirc. That usually reminded the pundits to mention it during commentary, less so with Carapaz.

As for Anna Kiesenhofer, a phenomenal tactical win, but sadly invisible at least in World Tour events and, in any case, apparently doesn’t like riding in a peloton so prefers TTs where she hasn’t had much success other than for Austria.

Halfords had quite a few brands in last time I was in a store. Could be worth a visit if one nearby.

Takes 5-10 mins prep for the breadmaker including a quick clean from the previous bake.  put it on the timer before you go to bed and, hey presto, wake up to lovely fresh bread wafting round the house.

they’re a game changer, I too found the faff of waiting for it to rise and so on meant i rarely bothered.  though this no-knead process sounds interesting.

The big cleat interface offsets it a bit, but yeah I’d still like to try some proper stiff Carbon (£150+?) Road shoes at some point.

that was my thinking hence going second-hand top of the range

    e.g. Vinted

I figured I’d want to change the insoles on second-hand shoes of course but the man-made uppers aren’t going to absorb sweat.

Having got some cheap 2nd hand Shimano RC902 which are the stiffest that Shimano do, I was worried that that aspect could make them uncomfortable on longer rides but I’ve actually found the opposite.  It’s a really nice solidly connected feeling to the bike particularly out of the saddle on hills/sprints.  I suspect it’s all far more whether the shoe fits well or not; in my case I’m using them with some specialized body geomety footbed insoles that have a bit more arch support than the stock Shimano ones.

Also I loved the shiny red which, of course, was actually the most important thing.

    Specialized Roubaix Pro 30/32?

Nice grippy feeling tyre with added protection for rough roads / potholes / etc.

Quite a few nutrition suppliers on the Singletrack discounts page as well – e.g. Veloforte

Some of the Tribe stuff is ok, vegan, gluten and dairy free so ticks those boxes for you + they claim to be less chemically/v.natural so hopefully some truth in that.  Of course all food is chemicals at the end of the day.  I think the key with any protein powders is to have them as cold as possible especially if not having with milk so keep a bottle of water or a pre-shaken one in the fridge.

There are very frequent 30-45% off offers on Tribe either directly on their mailing list or via various cashback / work perkbox type sites so keep a look out for that if you do want to try it.

    Tiler Swift.

    Quite deliberate I suspect!

Know the feeling.  We faced an impossible task trying to get my father off Windows Live Mail, or whatever it was called in Vista, and onto Outlook let alone just using a browser for his gmail account.

Gave up in the end and somehow managed to get that installed on his new PC.

Pretty sure that only Office 2016 (aka v15.x) and later are supported on Windows 11 now.  Older versions are going to have security vulnerabilities anyway now that MS no longer provide updates for them so not a great idea to carry on with.

I think he may have to bite the bullet and get a newer version, or could you include him on a family plan covering multiple users/PCs if you or a sibling have one?

    Similar question here:

    Bib shorts after Dhb

I found some Sportful ‘Ltd Shield’ ones on sale that come right down to the knee cap. The pics on their website give a good idea on leg length of the various models of shorts.

I have found the droopy bar bag thing a right faff as well.

My temporary solution is using a single clip on tri bar to keep it up and off the wheel & away from rubbing the headtube.

If I do much more bikepacking then I’ll look at either this handy Specialized Fjallraven handlebar rack.

    https://www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/fjallraven-specialized/sf-handlebar-rack/?v=F23235::7323450805333

    or the Restrap Bumper Bar

    https://restrap.com/collections/cages-mounts/products/bumper-bar

but I’ve been too tight so far to actually commit to either.

My go-to on wintry rides is to stuff a Montane Prism in a Decathlon 2.5l saddlebag which I can just leave on the bike but is quick to swapover if needed to other bikes.

    https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/2-5-cycling-watertight-saddle-bag-black/_/R-p-342837?mc=8767564

Something similar in down especially if no hood would pack down a fair bit smaller but this seems a good compromise on warm-when-damp and so on.  I got it after being caught out with a unfixable flat in the middle of nowhere and getting quite hypothermic.

I recently got some Sportful bibshorts on sale that come down right to just above the knee cap so may have the length you’re after.  I understood they are a kind of budget Castelli but may be completely wrong there.

They also do ones with some sort of dyneema type fabric on the side panels to help prevent gravel rash if you crash.  Do come up tight though so may want to size up (like Castelli).

Like the look of that FjallRaven handlebar rack.  Looks far superior to fiddling around with annoying straps and contraptions to stop handlebar bags/rolls/etc sagging.

Eurocamp-style place in the Ardeche?  generally have onsite cafe/restaurant to avoid the need to cook everyday but you get your own place to do breakfast / snacks / tea. once you’ve had your fill of swimming pools, then explore the area and book a canoe trip or two, possibly with overnight stay.

    e.g. https://www.eurocamp.co.uk/campsites/france/ardeche/le-pommier-campsite

(Not a personal recommendation, just a random google).

Sounds like Brittany Ferries had the same supplier as Disneyland Paris.  Utterly vile, bitter rubbish.  Think it was the Segafredo brand you get all over France;  definitely one to avoid.

The largest officially compatible sprocket in a 2x is a 36T and with RX820 it looks like you get a 48-31 combination, not 46-30 (that’s RX610) so I guess Madison aren’t going to hand out unsupported combinations.

Get into riding up road climbs for fun/challenge/fitness now, rather than discovering the concept ~33 years later.

Hah! 55 years old today.  My 10 year old self lived in Belgium and loved cycling.

I’d tell him all about cyclocross and road-racing.  He hadn’t even realised it was a thing despite living in the home of world cycling.

There was definitely a descent on the Dorset Gravel Dash where a dropper would have come in handy particularly if you like a fair bit of saddle to bar drop in your positioning.

The PNW Coast suspension/dropper combination would seem to be the ideal gravel post for that kind of riding – best of both worlds? albeit a bit heavy.

Decent knife sharpener?  No need to get precious about whetstones and the like with old knifes/knives (sp?).

or if you’ve got the time get the whetstone out and do an initial sharpening yourself.  She gets to keep the ones she’s familiar with but they start actually working.

Just plain old sandwiches to eat in the car on the way home?  But…

Bread machine to avoid shop bread with all the additives.  It really only takes 5 mins of prep to use it if you keep a box in the cupboard with all the ingredients and scales/measuring spoons ready to go.

Then the obvious fillers – Peanut butter, decent ham/cheese, etc.

P.S. ours was having Pediasure shakes daily for quite a while to supplement the picky eating / ARFID limitations.  Bit different to the protein shakes targeted at athletes/gym crowd.

I made a batch of rice cakes recently following a GCN recipe I found.  Very bland, very boring, but actually pretty effective mid-ride – easy to digest, etc, if a bit messy to eat with gloves.

Not sure how long you can keep them in the fridge though or if they freeze well.

Does sound like a Eurocamp / Siblu type holiday would fit the bill well for a few days of that trip.  Not used them in that area though so no specific recommendations other than look for the ones with more of a water park theme.   Some just have more of a straightforward pool + kids pool though might be near beaches to compensate.

In the spirit of the OP’s request for other questions:

    4) Road pedals/Shoes – would I really benefit from them?

I kind of like the Pro cyclist ethic of gleaming white road shoes matched with honed physique and, yes shaved legs, while riding up a beautiful Alpine pass. But the reality is that my boring slightly grubby black mtb shoes with SPDs seem to do a perfectly good job in the potholed muddy lanes of Dorset and let me walk around coffee shops, pause by a farm gate to faff/change a layer, etc.
