If there is nothing behind when approaching that sort of situation I always pull further into the centre of the road to give the car a better chance of seeing me. If there is a car/van/wagon behind me they useually see that and don’t pull out.
I know the driver should be more observant but its our lives.

I’d get the sram apex for £350 from Merlin:

    http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop/Road+Parts/Transmission/Groupsets+-+Road+Bike/SRAM+Apex+Groupset_APEX-GROUP-OFFER.htm

Still a double but will take an 11-32 cassette so you could ignor all the MTFU advice and sit and spin like you do on your mountain bike :-)

No showers at work but live and work near the station so bike on train in the morning then cycle the 20 miles home at night, all pretty flat but sometimes extend it a bit and add a bit more up and down. About three times a week in summer keeps me fit enough, and leaves me fresh enough for whatever weekend rides I want to do.

On One have two of these left:

    http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/BCAVCOD5/avid-code-5-disc-brake

    Front only but a bargain.

Just replaced my Hayes with one of these. It’s light years better in terms of power and feel. Only used it for one ride so can’t comment on durability but performance is ace.

I am currently reading ‘We must talk about Kevin’. It is rather heavy.

If you’re more than halfway through, perservere – it is worth it by the end. If you’re less than halfway through… you could just skip to the end and not miss a huge amount in terms of plot development.

Don’t skip to the end, stick with it.

Brilliant book and her next one “So much for all that” is really good too.

ive never had the fluid seal a puncture in 5 years of using tubeless. I use it when I first fit the tyres to seal the inside of the sidewalls but I dont bother after that.

If it’s a small puncture that seals instantly how would you know?

    cbrsyd

There shouldn’t be any sealant near the valve. It can clog them up over time actually.

I got a stans syringe that screws on the valve (after you remove the inner) and injected the fluid through that!

If you are reducing your employees holiday entitlement (which you are) you are changing their contracts. Contracts are not only what is written down they also include what happens in practice so if for two years you have been giving extra hols at christmas I would argue that those hols have become contractual.
There are only two ways you can legally change contracts. You do it either by consent or by imposing the change. Consent is always the best route. It involves talking to staff, explaining way the change is needed and getting them to sign up to the change. Imposition is necessary if employees don’t agree to the change. You still have to explain why the change is necessary, listen to what your employees say, look at alternatives but if there are genuine business reasons for the change and you have consulted effectively with your staff you can impose the change. The requires that you terminate their current contracts and issue new ones with the new holiday entitlement.

That’s the strict legal interpretation and would protect you form any legal challenge in the courts. If you are small business with few employees you may chose to take a punt and do it differently but would leave yourself open to challenge by doing so.

    Here endeth the first lesson.

do you understand why the forest sell of? I really can see no logic in this at all. No money in it, upset middle england – to waht end?

No I can’t understand it either. Unless it’s to placate the slavering right wing rottweilers you believe all conservatives to be

I understand your point, I think you are wrong. I believe the whole focus of their policy is driven by a idealogical hatred of public ownership.

TJ I understand yours, but think you are wrong.

Conservatives are driven by an ideological hatred of public ownership

TJ you are missing the point.

It the same way New Labour ditched traditional labour idealogies like privatisation and redistribution of wealth in order to get elected the Cons have ditched their “ideological hatred of public ownership”.
Some right wingers still believe that but the party as a whole will not let such an ideology get in the way of them being re-elected in 5 years time.

Increased poverty, increased unemployment, decreased standard of living for everyone but the rich, increased waiting times for the NHS, increased homelessness, destroyed public services.

Politics isn’t driven by ideology any more, its about who can manage the economy best. The only way to do that is to get elected, ConDems have done that. Does anybody think they will pursue policies that will result in TJ’s predicted outcome and prevent themselves being elected again?

Bit fiddly but fairly straightforward. Only problem I had was with the wiring but found their helpline really useful and soon sorted the problem.

So, in conclusion then, stick a finger up to marketing speak about modulation. Use that same finger to “modulate” your braking.

Right, bring on the next marketing bollocks and we will talk it into sense.

Perfectly summed up thread closed :-)

    coffeeking – Member
Modulation is down to the rider – it’s just how sensitive you are to your pressure on the lever, or if you mistake lever travel for brake force and assume that the same travel should give the same force on all brakes. If you’re club fisted you’ll find some brakes hard to modulate.

    I think coffeeking talks sense.

If modulation is anything (and not just marketing BS) it’s to do with your ability to sense when the wheel is going to lock/skid and adjust the lever pressure accordingly.

Motorbike disc brakes are good or bad, light or heavy, have good or poor feel, work well from cold or need to warm up but nowhere are they modulated.

    Ohh yes they are!

That’s how a mountain biker might might describe them but I have never once seen a motorbike road bike test that uses the word “modulation” to describe how a brake performs or feels and in the real motorbiking world I have never talked to anyone who “modulates” their brakes.

    cbrsyd
    Free Member

yep. so basically a brake you can lock dead easily won’t have as good a modulation as one that’s harder to lock, as there’s less ‘range of pressures’ you can apply to the brake lever.

I want a brake I can lock easily but one that also has good feel and little lever travel from full on to to full off.

So do I need good or badly modulated brakes?

The only way you can get ride of someone is by sacking them, them resigning or dying.

Once they have been with you a year they gain the right not to be unfairly dismissed so unless they resign you have to dismiss for one of the valid legal reasons. The three main one are redundancy, conduct (they punched someone or nicked something) and capability (crap at the job).

So unless there are conduct or capability issues or his job is redundant (which it can’t be if you are looking to replace him) you cannot sack him.

Best advice would be to talk to him and try and come up with flexible arrangement that would cut down on his traveling.

There are two kinds of people who never amount to much: those who never follow the rules, and those who always follow the rules.

So the answer to the question is yes.

Not quite off topic but I got done for doing 46 in a 40 limit so attended one of these driver rehabilitation course to avoid the 3 points. The guy running the course talked about road safety measures and explained that one of the main reasons councils put in cycle lanes was to narrow the road and therefore reduce the speed of motorists. First time I ever heard this but does explain some of the ridiculous lanes you see.
And there was me thinking they were for our benefit when really they are there to slow traffic down.

Tony24, you can see the tenons, they are covered in about 120yrs of paint so will need to strip this back to see if there are wedges. I am thinking on cutting through the joints, reducing the door to the new dimensions and biscuit jointing and screwing the doors back together, then hide the screws with dowels, I’m not sure if this would be strong enough though. Thoughts?

Make sure the joints don’t have a wooden peg, if so drill it out otherwise no amount of bashing will get them apart.
If you can’t get the joints apart and have to cut through them I’d use a router (can hire them) to rout mortices in both the stile (upright bit) and rail. Then plane up some timber that will fit into both as a “loose tenon” and glue that in.

    Good luck

    Technique is definitely the key.

For front crawl I found fins (cut down flippers) really helped. They give so much more thrust (oh er missus) than normal legstrokes so make developing arm and breathing technique much easier.

I’ve got an 03 focus and never had the dash “beep” whatever the temp. But I did have to have a new dash after about 6 years. It’s a common problem and although Ford didn’t do a recall they did reduce the price of a replacement from about £300 to about £70.
Sympoms are warning lights staying on/off and eventually speedo and revclock had a mind of their own with readings totally unrelated to road speed or engine revs.

Had an 03 1.6 Zetec for 8 years and done 80K (95K total). Good to drive and very reliable.

Other than regular servicing it’s had a left rear wheel bearing and a new dashboard (common fault so only about £100 to have replaced).

Still on original battery and exhaust, starts first time and averages about 36 mpg on a 20 mile commute.

Every man and his dog has one but you can see why.

Every day is a school day! I did not know that there was an exception from having to have consent to make deductions for overpayments.

The law relating to unlawful deductions from wages does state overpayments are an exception. But for just about everything else you have to give your consent. So an employer can’t reclaim say training expenses if you leave shortly after receiving the training unless you have given your consent.

    cbrsyd
    Free Member

Your employer doesn’t need your consent to reclaim an overpayment. Most large employers will usually agree to reclaim over the same period it was overpaid i.e if you were overpaid for 4 months most would reclaim the payment over 4 months. But your letter says you are leaving in 2 months so I guess that’s why they are reclaiming it over 2 months?

You could try talking to them nicely and agreeing to repay over a period that extends beyond your leaving. Personally I wouldn’t hold my breath because they have no control once you have left but good luck.
