I only really know the theatre business. You are about to get “Notes”
You no longer have to have an equity card or have done shows to get one. Anyone can have an agent. But they like you to make money so they can get their cut!
Am dram is one way to gain experience. If you are not prepared to gain any experience this way theatre is not for you. If you don’t know your USL from DSR you are screwed. Can you operate a door? Seriously. can you remember which way it opens. actors forget these basic tasks!
Life experience – the best actors have lived a bit, travelled, observed. But you don’t want too much of your own personality otherwise you will only get one type of job.
Do Not Work for Free in a professional show.. Theatre and TV have been relying on this for too long. One or two short jobs for experience but you will get exploited otherwise.
If you don’t get any work – write your own and prepare to be good at funding applications and finding sponsorship.
You can do it part time, a famous scottish panto dame I’ve worked with was a pipe fitter when he wasn’t acting. When he wasn’t a dame he was in taggart.
Training can take a longtime 3- 4 years, mature students do it as well. You need to be good at Voice, movement, history, fencing, dance, literature, music, singing. The busiest actors can do everything and may direct as they gain experience. Some retrain even if they are already working.
You have to do a lot of networking, and finding the right pubs and theatre bars to find your next job.
You could start off with some hard graft in theatre in education, Rural tours, being dead bodies in taggart. (Dawn Steel and the like all did this)
Equity minimum is about £350 quid a week. You do get overtime – but a 50 hour production week is not unheard of. The technicians will be doing 60 hours plus.
RSAMD, Rose bruford, WCMD and some of the london ones are all pretty similar for acting training. Once you graduate you will probably still have to work in a cafe or call centre though.
similar will apply to the film industry. make your own, join a film workshop, make contacts etc.
