It’s a Pipedream A.L.I.C.E, although mine is with the matching steel fork.

Good thread to read this – I’ve just bought exactly the same frame as you OP, even the same colour, and intend to run commuter wheels(700×35) mostly, and trail wheels (29×2.1) occasionally.

With the vastly different mileages and not-too-often swaps, it looks like swapping cassette over as the most sensible option.

Yeah I know what you’re saying is right, it just seems a bit harsh. Yo be clear, I’m not branding him a jobsworth, rather that particular action.

He definitely seems to lurk around the hedge and wait for cars at that Regent’s Park junction! And rightly so, I have no sympathy for those impatient drivers

The Comet is Coming last year were incredible. Early Stone Roses gig in a leisure centre was pretty special as a teenager.

Does Chemical Brothers count? Not a band as such but superb in a festival tent in 2000.

Finally, Roni Size with Reprazent, also in a festival tent at Reading circa 1998

Finlay Quaye, sadly gone off the rails. The audience left, and his band looked embarrassed. He ended up babbling on stage, sans band, to the last few remaining drinkers.

100% Briskers are my go to glove for all but the hottest and coldest of rides. Yeah the writing on the palms vanishes pretty quickly, but other than that they are really comfy and have outlasted other gloves (I’m on my second pair in five years)

    PM sent re Mason!

    @abingham
    – the Pipedream seems a bit burly for what I’m after but I have a set of Hope Hoops that will slot straight into that frame that they have in stock. No online reviews though, so I’ll PM you for a bit more info if that’s OK.

Email sent to Bikemonger to enquire about Incoming Surlys.

    Thanks all

Thanks for the replies. I’m 6’1″ so I think that puts me on a 58cm, or large for some and XL for the Tempest.

I’ve seen a couple of Genesis CDF available Cromolyolly thanks, and also the Planet X Tempest seems in stock.

G2, Al Camino, Kona, Kepler, CGR and Surly all seem to be ‘preorder ‘.

    @normalman
Ison looks to be a distributor – do you mean that retailers should get stock from them soon?

Lots of great suggestions, many of which I hadn’t considered, thank you STW.

One notable issue is lack of stock of virtually anything, but I’m willing to wait a month or two for the right bike.

I cracked a rib in July (bike related) and was away from MTB for about five weeks. Riding on the road or biking with the kids was manageable, but any pumps or hops were painful.

The sneeze I did the week after the fall was up there with the most painful experiences in my life.

Not being too knowledgeable about Roli, is that a genuine ‘factory’ Explorer? or some sort of mod? It looks nice, especially on the orange strap

Yeah Five Tens are hard to beat for grip. I have some Ion ones which are less grippy but stiffer and have outlasted the Five Tens.

Ride Concepts are the new kids on the block and could be worth a look

Stan’s say their flow mk3s are good up to 2.8 width, and they’re 30mm internal.

29mm I thought? Either way, I’ve run 2.8 DHF/DHR on Flow Mk3s and they were fine

The rims are carbon so I’d say thermal expansion is unlikely? I bloody hope there are no micro cracks!!

Dodgy sporadic valve seal? Sounds feasible. Hopefully the retaping and reinstallation of the valve will sort it, if not, replacement valve.

    Thanks

As a relative amateur in these matters, I’m going to open myself up to potential ridicule..

Surely the top of the steerer must sit slightly below the top of the stem/top spacer in order for the top cap to clamp everything down nice and securely?

A steerer 3mm longer than the stem top sounds like a recipe for rattles after the first ride.

I wonder it it’s possible that the vendor has done this off the back of the recent news that planning permission is to become automatic?

I have the Flows but find them a bit hot and chafy on longer rides. Dakine Slayers, although they look bulkier, are actually more comfortable and more breathable – I think the way that there is no material behind the knee really helps. Good protection too.

I got a carbon composite* one cheap off Amazon and it’s really good. I prefer it to the posher steel ones in the workshop. Make sure you get a depth gauge though, as some don’t have them.

I switched back to flats after I damaged a clipless shoe. At first my feet were coming off when lifting the back end when hopping and jumping but after two rides all was fine – I think I was just over thinking it.

It sounds odd but my main issue with flats is that I don’t seem to naturally place my foot in the optimum position every time, and find myself checking/correcting when I really should be concentrating on the fast-approaching feature!

I had a similar experience in the car. Constant hum.

Much searching, much listening closely to any electrical motor in the car.

Turned out to be the game Operation being squashed by stuff in the boot.

Hope Enduro rims are surprisingly narrow at 23mm. Mine were fine on 2.3 tyres for years on all sorts of terrain.

Crumbs! I put a set of 700c x 38 Vittoria Voyagers on some 30mm internal diameter wheels for commuting purposes. They’ve been great. Went on tubeless and set to 40psi.

The Ion shoes are good. Compared to 5:10 Freeriders, the sole is stiffer but grip not quite as good (still fine though)

With great grip comes compromise in durability – the 5:10s were falling apart in two years, but the Ions are still going strong after four.

I worked in the city (not big money sales/trader, more modest back office manager) but soon tired of it and we moved to the Midlands and I retrained as a cabinet maker soon after getting married.

We got a lot of the expensive things done while earning more (travel, engagement ring, wedding, honeymoon, but not property ladder unfortunately).

Our lifestyle is modest but comfortable. Making things is much better for self esteem than endless cash reconciliations!

Sometimes I feel like a ‘black sheep’ among my higher earning friends, but I think they respect my decision. More importantly, we have kids now and I’m home by five each evening! I’m thinner, fitter, happier and poorer.
