I’m sure we all know the physics now of better attack angle of a larger wheel, better rolling etcetc BUT it does come with increased weight. I have a humble Cotic Soul parts in special weight is 23.5 lbs, I am not going to get a Solaris down to that weight easily without a lot of carbon!
You still have to pedal/push these bikes up hill.
Everyone seems to forget the weight side of things frame wheels tyres forks all by default are heavier as they are larger whether 29 or 650B
Certainly as one gets older power gets less so bike weight is important!

Do a little research and find out the cost of design, mould prep, and tooling costs for Carbon and the lead in times (2 years?), then test prototypes, it can only be done overseas (labour costs), therefore loses one of Oranges unique selling points ie made in UK.
Then after all that which wheel size 26, 27.5 or 29 you going to pick as one mould size doesn’t fit all?
    Not that easy

Five : long slack and low , not many true 140 mm travel trail bikes with 67 degree head angle.
    Bring it on

I run a 34 / 22 x 9 speed on the Five, a mate runs a 36 /24 x 10 speed on his and has no problems, I think it has one spacer in the BB, He is a lot younger than I am (40 v 57 years) so I tend to spin the gears to protect my knees rather than stomp!!
The great thing about the Five it is slack, long and low, in fact I dont think there are any other true 140 trail bikes that have a 67 degree head angle, most seem to go 150 or even 160 to get that slack.

Goat track that runs down gully at north end of the glider school, ride road and back up track to southern end of glider school, some run off in the trees as well if you want a little more techy down hills, but then need to climb back up again!! no suprise really!!

Was up there on Sat great day 38 km, out of castleton down rocky cart track to a road up other side dropped into ladybower, bacon butty, climb out, down bermed cart track to cross road, up the Beast, across the top down in to Edale, pint at the Ramblers, tarmac climb out to where the parapenters are, contour the hill, rode the ridge and dropped back into castleton via foot path and bridle way.
    Great ride in great conditions!!
My Five just ate it up!!

Update on demo Clockwork (basic spec), ridden by a 17 yo good bike handler who has raced junior downhill,( the gap jumps he does I would end up in the ortho ward|) he felt it was amazing, fast accurate and he ragged it round all local trails as well as the downhill runs, came back with a huge grin on his face!! It was all on to stop him trying a road gap drop on it, but as someone else is demoing the bike tomorrow…!!
I would agree with a previous poster, 10 speed 120 fork light rims would make this bike a peach. £350 frame only seems pretty good value.
Just to add a little more, pointing this bike downhill, gives the same level of confidence as my 140 mm travel FS enduro bike, the slackish head angle coupled with the “rollability” of the 29 er sized wheel is preety good. On the flat and in singletrack it doesnot seem to get hooked up in ruts/bog compared with my Soul 26 er, so when or even if the trails ever dry out this is going to be some seriously quick trail bike!

I have one on test and in standard form (28lbs) it rides woodland single track as well as my Cotic Soul (23.5lbs) both on 120 mm forks, It has surprised me somewhat. In the deep mud where the soul digs in and threatens to chuck you out the front door the clockwork seem to just muller the mud!
It does seem to be as comfortable as the Soul
Given if I had one I would use the bits from the Soul, and use crests lightweight wheels, 9/10 speed and tubeless and I reckon it would be a cracking bike, like all Orange bikes, the angles seem to be spot on.
And It can be manualled (size 17 inch Me 5’10”)!!!

If you look at the video footage from 2012 (day 5 I think) you will see some of the carbon frame chain stay fractures! light bike but didn’t make the grade under the unrelenting conditions.

Thing was Jam bo, it picked it speed very quickly when the trail pointed downhill and was not in any way disturbed by the underlying trail, very smooth and fast lulling me into a false sense of security!!
I guess it would take a little longer to get used to its smooth trail ironing speed.

I rode both the Gyro and the 140 29 er at an Orange uplift day at Cwm Carn back to back with a Five ( I own a Five as well), the Gyro was staggeringly good, better up hill and equally good and probably faster than a 140 mm Five downhill.
The 140 29 er was a rocket ship, so fast it was unbelievable, in fact I could not slow it down and went over the top of a berm, could have been in the next county!
Steve Jones of Dirt mag reckons the fastest most capable 140 trail bike he has ever ridden is an Intense 29 140mm travel bike.
However I contacted some friends in Molini where I rode last year, posing the question of 29 er use on their Superenduro trails, and the riders using 29 ers did struggle on some of the super steep tight gnarly bits.
Certainly as an avid supporter of Orange bikes, I cannot decide to go down the Gyro route, given at 57yo I am getting a more wheels on the ground rider!!
    No help really !!

Less likely to be fibrosarc on belly as usually found on back.
Could be a mammary tumour, or even an eosinophillic granuloma complex.
best way to find out before surgery is fine needle aspirate (quick and easy to do no GA required) and surgical decisions made on that basis.
Mammary tumours in cat are more unpredictable than dogs as can spread across the cat from side to side as have differing blood supply to dog (which tend to spread linearly)

Fastest bike I have been on recently was a 140 mm 29 er, so fast it needed air brakes, well into warp speed. Crashes probably leading to an orthopaedic unit visit! However the biggest problem is rim strength , as they were being trashed at a regular rate due to the impact speed. Bigger tyres, yep ok but then you have a 2 kg plus rotating mass!
So the best 29 er for my skills/self preservation was a lightweight 120 mm full sus 29er,
    Just a thought!!

Great review, the problem is always building in strength, as these bikes are going to be ridden hard by some.
As well as a light “woods” Soul I have an Orange five with two complete wheel sets the bike then weighs either 27.5 or just under 29 lbs BUT completely different in character. I only run 140 mm bolt throughs and Maxle back end.
Which is why going to a 100 mm fs soul would be the one for me!

Orange have just got rid of their ST4 which was basically a 120mm trail bike, problem was that built up its weight wasn’t that shy of a well specced Five..!

100 mm travel ripper, as slack a head angle as you dare (67 with 120 forks) built up with light weight rims, single front ring would weigh 25 lbs, given I have a Cotic (medium) with 2.25 and 2.4 tyres on, that weighs in at 23.5 lbs.

The Orange Gyro 29 er is as fast if not faster than a Five on same light terrain, quicker uphill, but down side is it is not as good for tight switchback downhills, or when the terrain gets somewhat more lumpy, so overall not as versatile, if one does the odd Alpine trip. However their 140 29er was like a rocket ship and needed air brakes downhill.
