my 1st boy had one and is now flying along on his isla cnoc14 now at the tender age of 3 1/2 he had a rothan from 2yrs and was soon scooting around everywhere, my soon to be 2yrs old 2nd son is already feet off the ground on it now so will probably be using pedals even sooner.
i was amazed at the 5mins it took to transition from scoot to pedals, its ace!!

dont worry about cost they are well worth it imo

yes they are around 1mm wider so presumably you would lose 2mm ish of the axle length,
