Tenda’s have always been a bit pony

Mesh systems along with everything else seem to have jumped in price lately so new & not shite <£200 might be a challenge new.

I’d not bother with wifi6, wifi5 is generally more than sufficient for most domestic situations. I’d stick with tp-link, Linksys or netgear personally.

Whatever you get stick with tri-band systems.

Can’t be more specific but if you find so you think fits the bill post it up if your unsure.

If your using 2 factor authentication ideally via an app rather than simple sms you should be fine. Obviously remind any staff not to respond/share these requests.

While it maybe a nefarious intent you should never under estimate people ability to constantly enter the wrong email address believing it’s there’s.

See, as soon as someone gets all “ignore the well intended but utterly useless advice” , then goes on to talk about vacuum leaks, in a diesel car. – with no throttle to create neg air pressure i just think the well intended advice might be more helpful.

Would that be the same person who said vacuum/air leaks, I’m assuming there’s no air fed to the engine or turbo(s) then?

Would that be the same person that caveatted their comment that it might be in the well meant but tosh category?

The same person who suggested a mark specific forum might yield some more substantive responses?

Op it’s unlikely you’ll get much more that the well meaning but ultimately useless suggestions like ‘I emptied my ashtray once & then the performance was twelvety % better’ or ‘my Nan has a dog but his leads blue’

It could very well be that some kind of air / vacuum leak has been introduced by inadvertently disturbing some pipe work during the service / inspection. But that’s just another well meaning guess ;)

It might be worth taking it elsewhere & have the fault codes read, note them & reset & re-read after a week or two to see if any come back.

It might also be worth joining a MB specific forum / piston heads MB specific sub-forum & seeing if they have insight.

Perhaps try logging into your account directly from the app or website rather that the email to ascertain if it is a genuine request or not?

As for why now, perhaps in the three years you’ve been a subscriber there terms & conditions &/or internal processes have changed, perhaps those of your payment providers have & they now require a match between payment & payee…

Just handing your photos over to a 3rd party in the cloud isn’t a great call, while it’s unlikely that Amazon or google will go bust overnight they could lock you out of your account for various reasons.

It’s also not a great idea to use a cloud based file sync offering like onedrive or google drive as the offer little protection from ransomware attacks.

In an ideal world you would use the 3 2 1 method, 3 copies of your data, on two different medias, one of them offsite.

This might give you some more data as to why & how.

M.2 ssd is just a ssd but a alternate form factor / connector.

Crucial have a online app that should advise what components can be used to upgrade a system, if your unsure then using that should help you understand what your options are, obviously it will only provide crucial products.

The bigger question is how you planned on moving over your data?

Wireless not my bag but I’m sure plenty of folk can opine.

Unfortunately plenty of the scrotes know to cover up & even if they don’t plod are unlikely to do anything but I should note there’s increasing evidence of said scrotes going equipped with wireless jammers too these days.

I use office 365 at work loads. But I shut my personal account as having to 2 accounts created lots of problems

But what I’ve learnt is that what I want is back up not syncing

    Thanks again

As per my earlier post in a ideal world it would be both, sync based for those ‘oh cock’ moments where you delete a file or folder.

Weekly/monthly backups for disaster recovery, these need not be off site but it’s nice, the video I posted talks about using Blu-ray media which is quite a neat solution if you are disciplined to do manually, if not some backup sw will have this functionality built in.

    Edit:
I forgot to say you don’t really have backups until you have tested them by successfully restoring some files this should be done reasonably regularly for a couple of reasons, you want to be sure your backups are working as expected prior to needing them, secondly if you do need them that stressful enough without learning how to perform a restore at the same time.

It depends on what kind of risks you are trying to mitigate, I’ll admit I haven’t looked at Dropbox for a while but last time I did it was very much like onedrive & google drive which are file sync mechanisms with versioning & cloud storage.

This means they work very well with keeping a copy of your data of site & in sync on multiple systems if you wish & accidental deletion/file corruption is also easy to recover from with the versioning aspect.

Where they are less able is the maleware/ransomware attacks, this is where a device becomes compromised & then your data is infected & subsequently encrypted effectively locking you out of your data, at this point you’d say great I’ll restore from my backup & that works well until you are locked out again because the files you restored were already infected just not encrypted, so you restore again but not from the live ‘backup’ but a earlier version & find the same thing happening again.

This is because now days the creators of said maleware/ransomware are aware of online backups with versioning & infect the data then make numerous small changes to files so that they ‘use up’ the versions of a file meaning whatever version you restore it’s already compromised.

In a ideal world you’d mix something like Dropbox/onedrive/google drive with something like backblaze / arcronis or another true backup product.

Set up monthly or weekly these give real point in time restore points rather than simple versioning.

    This might explain more.

Think the problem in our house is the decent amount of structural steel where walls have been taken down.

Long term plan is mesh using wires for the backhaul (which Draytek WAPs will do) rather 5sn mesh with wireless backhaul.

As per my earlier post you may want to consider loft mounting.

We have a 3bed 2 story Victorian detached with a open plan gf & rear single story extension, so 3 sizeable steels. We cover this with a single tp-link eap225 accesspoint & get ~500-600Mbs up&down on both floors.

    It’s certainly worth testing experience.

Why not try fitting some kind of air extraction / circulation system focused on the dvr?

That said I’ve got my boiler, e ufh controller, hw cylinder, accesspoint, switch, nas x2 & server in my south facing loft & have had zero fires or extraction.

You may be worrying over a non-issue.

Granted know very little about this subject so will be doing more research – I might have done it at home had I realised how little might actually cost! – my solution for providing internet to an outbuilding was an extremely cheap fibre-optic cable (between two extremely expensive fibre-compatible switches 😂)

Take a look at crosstalk solutions youtube channel, lots of setup / config videos, it’s a piece of the proverbial if you have los & can get ethernet to both radios.

There are so many individual variables that it is impossible to advise.

The general advice is to buy from a retailer with a good return policy & try, if it resolves the issue then great, if not return for a refund.

Not all mesh systems need ethernet cabling. Some like Orbi use another wifi channel to communicate with each other, others will use the same WiFi channel to communicate, others can indeed use cabling. But you are right, it does depend on exactly what they are trying to achieve.

Indeed, mesh especially in domestic settings is a nebulous marketing term, it generally relates to systems that use wireless for the interconnect between mesh ‘nodes’, it could be systems labled dual, tri or now quad band, in the strictest sense wired accesspoints are not a mesh system as they have a single route to the router rather than the potential various routes a wireless interconnect could offer.

So by there nature you need to place mesh nodes where they have a good – mid wireless signal to the preceding node to ensure they have a reliable interconnect. Often you find folk place them in the dead zone & wonder why the wifi experience barely improves.

That said wherever possible I’d encourage a wired interconnect if possible. I’ve found them to be more stable, offer greater throughput & can often be cheaper as you often need less accesspoints to cover the same area as wireless mesh nodes.

As ever the devil is in the detail.

You are going to fix it much faster by getting some sort of mesh system now.

As ever that will depend on the size, shape, number of floors & construction type of the home

The incoming line location & speed, where any existing wifi dead zones are & level of performance the op is looking to achieve.

Plus the budget & willingness/ability to install some ethernet cabling.

Wireless mesh systems are very good for some solutions & inappropriate for others.

They (generally) create something like a spherical ’bubble’ though misshapen I.e. not as large/powerful in back 120° Or so.

Depending on the home construction especially the ceiling/floors if the are standard wooden boards/joists & non foil backed plasterboard then you can often get very good results mounting the ap’s in the loft ~1-2 above floor level.

It allows the wireless ‘beam’ to form before it encounters any walls.

yeah. I’m being somewhat tongue-in-cheek here. I probably will check him out, based on what you’ve said. Specifically my worry is that he’s doing all this to generate clicks/views/revenue – which means sensationalism in the same way that tabloid journalism is not a good thing. It’s his expression rather than his actual face, but it’s the exact one that you get in local newspapers when they’ve obviously been instructed to look surprised/concerned 😂 But maybe that’s just his way.

    @footflaps

I’d leave Virgin and go to a generic OpenReach provider – same service, lower price and much easier to swap around come renewal time. The problem with Virgin or dedicated Fibre providers, is there is no competition using that connection.

    Not true.

Yes VM don’t share there coax or fibre infrastructure.

Other fibre infrastructure providers do, do all of them do this, no.

@ratherbeintobago As ever it depends on the wobbly fleshy thing making the connection more than the connector type.

If you were doing 100’s of drops day in day out I’d likely go with a good old style crimp tool & or punch downs.

20 or so domestically with some other cable types thrown in toolless all day long & twice on Sundays.

As it was a lease car I took out return to invoice, used https://www.ala.co.uk/previously and 10% cashback via  https://www.topcashback.co.uk/search/merchants/?s=ALA%20Insurance%20%E2%80%93%20GAP%20Insurance

ala are a good option, worth talking to them to confirm what policy meets your needs.

last time we brought a new car the first years insurance covered new for old replacement so we took replacement insurance from ala & deferred the policy start date by 12m to being covered by the car insurance policy

Simply check with them if you can use your existing deco’s of if they force you to use the eero.

if it’s the later iirc it doesn’t have a modem mode, it may have a bridge mode that is similar if not disable wireless & set the existing deco’s in accesspoint mode.

The vast majority of IoT devices are only 2.4GHz wifi capable, splitting the bands / ssid’s will have zero impact.

Where splitting the bands can help is when you have devices that fail to make a connection at all & that is relatively rare these days.

If you can’t run a cable then powerline is worth a try, it imho stands more chance than a wifi 6 platform, wifi 6 will still use the 5GHz frq as the wireless backhaul the same as your current bt disks & as wireless transmit levels are limited by law most devices are around the maximum out of the box, so the new set is unlikely to be a significant improvement.

I would try a three pack of powerline devices & use ethernet to all the bt disks, I’d buy from Amazon for the return policy in case it doesn’t improve.

If it doesn’t I’d try getting the master & 2nd disk closer together.

Failing that it’s likely cable time.

It’s often worth looking on eBay for sold listings rather than auto trader as it removes the haggle ambiguity.

I wouldn’t go back much more than 6-8 weeks, also the results should be within a reasonable travel distance I’d say 100miles max but it could be less.

If they refuse to move satisfactorily then escalate to internal disputes process & ultimately to insurance ombudsman.
