I picked up a sony SRS X5 for £90. Sounds excellent. Can be found in sainsburys (and now currys) for £99 at the mo
CaptainSlowFree MemberI’ve been looking at TVs recently in the 55″ ish size. I’d love one that doesn’t have smart, 3d or curve but they’re tough to find. Any good examples about?
CaptainSlowFree Member@jamie – how are you getting on with the parallettes and book?
CaptainSlowFree MemberI think we get too hung up on awd ability when looking at 4×4. It’s only part of why you buy cars like the crv
CaptainSlowFree MemberMy flux is raw and has no coating. The aluminium oxidises with air and gives a matt finish. It only needs coating if you intend to polish it shiny, then clear lacquer will keep it shiny.
Every now and then I polish it till it shines just for a change.
CaptainSlowFree MemberI find the AE to be utter pants. I’d recommend paying a little extra for Apple TV and using it for audio instead. Google AE dropouts for reference.
CaptainSlowFree MemberBeen off googling as I quite enjoy listing to some of the classicly trained metal acts. Prefer the S&M type approach of mixing the two styles to say having a band covering metal songs with classical instruments. Don’t get me wrong, most of it is pleasant, but what I like is when boundaries are pushed and new pleasing noises are made :)

@ CaptainSlow – surely with a Big Muff you should be playing Mudhoney?POSTED 22 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST
Just checked em out, not really my cup of tea. I liked pumpkins around Siamese Dream, Gish and Mellon Collie so picked out Today and Bullet with Butterfly Wings to learn in the run up to Christmas.
CaptainSlowFree MemberJust stumbled across this site – http://sand-bikes.co.uk/#!home £399 for a fattie!
Local and tempting – anyone got one?

bought me a Big MuffIs that a Big Mac with a pubic hair in it?
No, it’s the fillet o ….. IGMC :D
I’m not sure whether I really bought it for Pumpkins tunes or whether I bought it just so I could say I’d bought a big muff

I bought me a Big Muff
tell me more – I have a hankering for one of these to run from my strat….Not much I can tell you I’m afraid, not used it yet (won’t be till Christmas day). I bought it from my local music shop (who price match) so paid £52.50 for it.
Cant wait, been learning some Pumpkins tunes especially :)
CaptainSlowFree MemberOur old Kenwood Chef dated back to the late 50’s or very early 60’s I believe. It finally packed up a couple of years ago and couldn’t be repaired (metal fatigue).
It has been replaced with another Chef – can’t remember the exact model but its the titanium with the larger motor.
It’s used on average every two days for bread, and then for cakes n other processing tasks so only gets the odd day off a week. I haven’t bought the mincer for it yet but will one day.Get a Chef, get one with the largest motor you can afford and enjoy the weight gain
CaptainSlowFree MemberNow this is exactly why I post on here sometimes :D
260 to the rafters (no ceiling) so the cage would fit (220) but if I did clean/jerk I’d need to pick my spot carefully (I don’t currently use a program containing those kind of moves)
Alternatively, I could to turn to chopmyroofuptrackworld for advice :D
CaptainSlowFree MemberHave you tested just using the Mac on board speaker and mic?
I don’t use a headset anymore and haven’t for a long time – both with Skype and Lync. Not sure how well it would work for a group round a table. Surely you want something from Polycom for that?
CaptainSlowFree MemberI’ve got space (just needs a little tidy first :D ) and am going to go for a cage, bench, weights and rings – the rings are a great tip.

and these
http://www.powerhouse-fitness.co.uk/crossfit-gym-rings.phpI’m going to hold off till Jan to see if there are any promo’s etc
And one last thought – rubber matting – where’s best? I really don’t want to knock holes in the garage floor
For the whole Gym v home setup debate – a home gym would be more convenient for lunchtime sessions as I w**k from home.
CaptainSlowFree MemberSome great setups here, thanks for sharing.
I was thinking of going for the power tec bench n weights from fitness superstore but am now thinking of getting the cf475 setup from powerhouse (thx Jamie) along with the above book (thx rob – I’ve got an Amazon voucher to use).
the main reason for wanting to do this is the time it could save and having the kit being so accessible. I’m motivated so that’s not an issue as I go regularly. Also, over the past few years I’ve spent over £1k going to the gym so in a few years would see the outlay returned so long as the kit lasts.
Anymore suggestions on kit? I’d like to keep it <<£1k so at present, it’s the cf475 cage bench and weights along with an ez bar and a set of Dumbbells (to add to the ones I have so there’s less faffing changing the plates).
Anymore good books?Ta
CaptainSlowFree MemberYou’re welcome matt.
It’s of course your choice but buying an electr acoustic means you may be paying for electronics you may never use. If it were me, I’d buy an acoustic as that’s what you want. You’d only need to amplify an acoustic if gigging so in your case I wouldn’t consider one yet.
That’s just my opinion though. Play a few and play the one that feels good to you. A guitar that feels nice and excites you is one you’ll want to play.
Regarding the electric v acoustic argument. Buy what you like and will cover most of the music you want to play. Believe me, n+1 applies here. If you stick at it, and love it, this will only be you’re first guitar.
Try and buy second hand from the shop to get a better guitar for your money. I can’t help with shops up north as I’m a southerner. Do guitarguitar have a branch up there?
CaptainSlowFree Memberive never bought a guitar either online or from a shop that wasn’t “setup”. Setup however is subjective and on some I made some adjustments. I’ve been lucky but intonation and neck relief have been fine as well.
Trouble is as a complete novice you won’t know what you like :)
What have you decided to get? Have you set your expectations realistically? How will you learn? What are your goals? How long will you be able to practice for every day? (15 mins a day is better than 2h in one sitting).
If you prepare a little by thinking through those points and committing, at any age, over time you will become proficient enough to really enjoy it.
A couple of lessons would get you off to a good start.
Apologies for going on a bit, it’s not quite as simple as buying one and putting it in the corner of the room.
Don’t forget a clip on tuner – get the shop to throw one in if you can ;)
CaptainSlowFree MemberHave a look for an older LP trad if you don’t want to blow your budget.
Also, for the home use side of things you can find the 1 watt marshalls at a reasonable price. The above approach will leave cash for a decent gigging amp as well
CaptainSlowFree MemberBig fan of howies merino. as above, wait for the sale.
I’ve gone of howies merino boxers due to the elastic band folding in on itself. Prefer finesterre boxers but they’re a bit steep outside of a sale.
CaptainSlowFree MemberThe new Machine Head album is streaming ahead of release :)
CaptainSlowFree MemberI’ve had one since approx 09 and love it. Worn daily, wherever and whatever I’m doing. Looks nice, tells the time, bit different from the usual Omega and Rolex
Serviced once after I knocked it and it stopped working. Mechanical watches are lovely but they aren’t as accurate as quartz and need the odd service/bit more care.Think it cost about £75 for the repair.
TLDR: Thumbs up
CaptainSlowFree MemberAs with any insurance shop around. Think I paid a smidge over £100 for 4 years back to invoice
CaptainSlowFree MemberIf you’re tall or have a bad back Bulldog are brilliant. Even if you’re not, I’d still give them a try. Nicely made and in the UK
CaptainSlowFree MemberMost second hand cars from a good dealer have a warranty and a hand it back within 28 days type thing.
CaptainSlowFree MemberAre you using a crossover cable two connect the two switches?
Is there a switch on it to crossover like their would be on a hub?
Edit – explanation here
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/34C3163EFAC9F30E86256B8F0060AD0CCaptainSlowFree MemberSheryl’s been kidnapped!
Gutted to hear that, will keep an eye out for you
CaptainSlowFree MemberThere are some good guides and calculators on the nationwide site.
Remember ea fees are negotiable and to add vat
Get at least 3 quotes on conveyancing as that will give you legal fees plus search costs etcCaptainSlowFree Member^ this +1000 if we’re focusing on playing for fun.
If your playing for learning pick a classic that has parts in it that are relevant to what your learning. A particular scale, mode or arpeggio etc
CaptainSlowFree MemberI bought one to try instead of Apple TV as I’ve not had a great airplay experience.
It works well using the ipad and Netflix, iplayer and you tube. I haven’t used any other apps. In order to play movies in iTunes using Chromecast you’ll have to convert them to a standard movie format and play the using chrome and casting the tab.
It all works well here using a netgear router.
CaptainSlowFree MemberWhat about a really nice cottage somewhere?
We’ve got one for a week with a pool :)
CaptainSlowFree MemberA low end trek. A 1.2 is a decent first bike. The added bonus is you’ll get a bike fit meaning you will know for certain it fits. They’ll swap stems, saddles, bars for you until it fits properly.
CaptainSlowFree MemberAs the option not to use an agent has been covered, I’ll go against the grain and say that there are some very good agents out there. Very good.
Tips – selling
1. Look for the agent with the strongest rep, best local knowledge of your area
2. Understand the fee structure (sole v multi agent). Some folk will advise against sole as multi creates an incentive. If point 1 goes well a lot of the arguments for multi disappear and you’ll end up with a higher fee for nothing,
2. Negotiate the fee (and bear in mind you will need to add VAT )
3. Read the t&cs carefully – especially around the fee and cancellation. If there is anything in the contract you don’t like, redact and negotiate.Always be polite and professional toward the agent. They are there to serve you and get the most for your property that they can and if you build a relationship you can gain an insight into the area and how agents work.
Shop around talk to at least 3 or 4 agents and get their valuations. The highest valuation isn’t necessarily the best.
Tips buying
1. Never reveal your financial info or your absolute max. Give them a loose target and view houses at the top end or over budget with a view to negotiating. Be prepared for potential disappointment depending where you are in the country.
2. The agent is not your friend. Their job is to get as much info and cash from you as possible.
3. Be aware of point 2, build a relationship with the agent and get as much info from them as you canMy own experience in trying to book viewings with some of the larger nationals is that they don’t get back to you with an appointment and don’t chase for viewing feedback. I would not want some of these agents selling my house. However, some were great and good fun to negotiate with.
You could also look at sale by tender where the buyer picks up the fee on your place. Not too common near me but I have seen them up and viewed. IIRC the one I looked at cost the seller £125 and the buyer £3k (+VAT).
