Probably comes down to what you mean by pootle. She’ll be able to ride it on bike paths etc fine. I’m the same hight, but a bloke, so apparently different proportions. My first mtb was a medium and it was ok. But when I got onto a small I suddenly realised how a bike was supposed to fit. It was a revelation!

As a very short person who has ridden good 26″ and 29″ wheel frames, people need to get out of their heads the silly idea that wheel and frame sizes should correlate. The benefits of each wheel size are the same irrespective of rider size. Ie reduced rolling resistance, greater roll over etc.
Obviously there is a point where big wheels don’t fit into a small frame, but it’s a lot smaller than you guys seem to think. I think the limitation is really measured at the head tube hight. For a given suspension hight your stuck at your minimum bar hight and if your head tube and there fore bars are too high your not going to keep the front down. From my experience, with a short head tube, a 5′ person can fit on 80mm 29er hardtail. And seat and bars nearly level. That’s my wife. 5’3″ 100mm the same. But if you go for more travel handle bars will be too high.

“She doesn’t mind which size wheels she has but she cannot see the point of 29″ wheels for a 5ft 3″ person.”

The point for 29″ wheels is exactly the same for any sized person. Getting a frame that works well for a smaller person may be another matter.

I can’t speak highly enough for my Specialized Fate, but I understand Specialized isn’t very niche 😛

5’3″ here. Specialized fate. My 4’11” wife also much prefers it to her 14.5 trek hardtail.
Not all 29ers will fit small people, ie rode a small giant trance and my wife the womens anthem, neither were very great. But the specialized has a nice short head tube, small travel on forks, and pretty short chain stays. Its a great bike.

Wed morn parents in law look after youngest son who is not at school 3hrs. Thurs night late ride after kids in bed.

Half way down 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes are not discount vouchers. They read as full price vouchers to me…

Think I had some dodgy altitude reading on my last ride 2000m in 50 km. Probably should have been 800m. Not sure how to fix it.

50% but I probably will have to finish by Friday. So not sure if I will make it!

I’m 5’3 and have been fine on a specialized epic. But probably wouldn’t recommend going over 100mm suspension. You just can’t get the front end low enough. That being said I’ve really been enjoying my specialized fate. Hardly ever miss rear suspension. And so much lighter without it.

    +1 rocketdog.
The rims are same diameter, but CX bike might have a rear axle spacing which is road width or Mtb standard which 135mm wide.

I go faster on my 29er hardtail with 80mm at the front than I did on my 120mm dual 26er. That being said I’m hoping a dropper post will help out on the downs when they get bumpy.

How about On-One build a good light alloy 24 or 26 inch wheeled kids frame?

I cut the innertube so it was only about 30 mm wide. Didn’t want it to be so thick. Also you can wrap both ends under itself so as not to have unsightly cable ties. You just have to pull it all tight while your wrapping.

Edit, dunno why the pic isn’t working 🙁

You’ll have to swap the rear derailleurs as shimano and SRAM don’t play with each other.

Fuel ex has standard fork. It’s their 29ers that have larger offset fork.

Biggest issue I think is bar height compared with bottom bracket. Even with 90mm head tube and 80mm forks I can’t quite get seat hight level with bars.

Surely it doesn’t mean much without rim width? I’m 70 kg riding 2.25 RR on 19mm rims. Wonder whether going to 21mm rims would make much difference. I run 25 psi

Broken ACL in left knee from combo of skiing accident when I was 16 and fruit salad game at a youth camp when 25. A bit of pain nearly always, but after reading this lot, I don’t think I’ll mention it again.

Yes, I’m 5’3 and ride a specialized fate small. Im much faster than on my trek fuel x8 everywhere except going down, when I’m about the same.

With white forks, I think you need just a touch more white towards the rear of the bike.
