Yeah, cool.
M.
You make a very sad but undeniable point. However, now, and perhaps somewhat belatedly, that I have seen what globalisation really means, is it wrong for me to want to change ?.

Not sure how to take your post there.
I don't have a wide and varied experience of all the lights available.
If you're having reliability probs with an exposure, then I'm assuming you're out of warranty.
But remember that since 1999 we in the EU enjoy a minimum 2 year warranty on electrical goods. So if your exposure is less than 2 years old, I'd have hoped Exposure would help-out…However, someone has mentioned Ay-Ups. I've seen a pair, once. They seem to be bright, but I would guess they're getting left behind a bit in the Lumen stakes.
You've got the DIYers like Trout, and that other person, Luminous.
I think you may have a good idea of whats available.

Yeah, didn't have my helmet light with me that night, Doh 😳
M.
I doubt the magicshine is any worse for this than any other brand (apart from maybe Hope made in this country?) – their profit margins are just way higherIf I'm reading that correctly, then I think you're wrong. A light from Hope is way more expensive, yes, but the cost to Hope to make their lights will be much higher than the costs the manuf of the magicshine have to contend with. As we all know, we have different living costs, employment law and taxation to China. Not saying whether thats a good or a bad thing, but that's the lay-of-the-land.
Shandy. Guilty as charged (see above),I forgot to take my 2nd light.
Hey, I do have "Crash" in my name 😀Cheers

Point taken, but shouldn't that really be, lights costing 5 times as much shouldn't have these problems.
FB. Hhmmm. Its a strategy I suppose. But theres going to be limits to what one can do with a magicshine housing.
Last week I ran one of my lights until it went out completely. I'd never done that before. The batt warning had been on for some time. I had just completed my last run and out went the light.
In that split second the shock at having zero visibility made me realise that saving a few quid and running a cheap light which may fail, isn't a chance I would take, personally.
Don't suppose anyones bothered about the environmental impact of cheap lights from China ?, you know, one of the worlds two largest poluters.
Nor is anyone bothered about the low pay, exploitative employment practices used to provide something like the magicshine.Well, good luck, but its not for me. Saving for a few months is easier. Just wish I'd started during the summer.

Captain_CrashFree MemberAll you DX magicshine buyers. You're a brave bunch.
Have you read this:
So, I received one of these lights to evaluate. Anyhow, here's my summary after an hour or so of running various measurements.
Cheap construction and incredibly poor thermal path from the LED/Driver to the body of the light.
The driver outputs around 2.4A on high and around 0.84A on low. Regulation appears stable over time and temperature.
The inductor just 'hangs' in space on its leads – that is NOT a good plan for long term reliability as the light bounces around. Those leads will eventually snap.
The next thing is that the thermal path from the driver is pretty poor. I mounted the brass PCB 'holder' into a support to see how hot the driver electronics would get to versus the brass ring/support. After about 10 minutes the driver was at 75C with the brass ring at 30C. I'm guessing there would be an even higher temp differential with more time. This shows a poor thermal path from the driver to the brass ring.
Now, if we factor in ambient temperature in the housing due to the LED heating, then that poor driver is going to be up in 100C range in very short order. I hate to imagine what the junction temperature of the FET and switcher IC are at.
So, given that the driver shares the same thermal path as the LED that driver WILL cook over time – if the inductor doesn't snap off first…
Anyhow, I certainly wouldn't want to use the light long term and rely on it as it stands. Even beefing up the the thermal path from the LED heatsink to the body of the light will only address keeping the LED somewhat cooler – the driver board is still going to be cooking.
So, in summary, you get what you pay for. The light package is relatively inexpensive, but there's a bunch of thermal issues that haven't been well addressed and some electronics issues (floating inductor and PCB thermal path to the brass ring).
FYI.
Don't shoot the messenger.

Captain_CrashFree MemberOops, I shoulud have been clearer in my previous post.
When I wrote 600 lumens, I was referring to the DX magicshine.
I haven't seen a
toiletLUU light yet.Captain_CrashFree MemberJust a word of caution here.
The internals of the DX magicshine were recently reviewed by someone who certainly "knows their onions". It didn't fair well.
Can't say about the hand torches on DX though, they may be better made.
Just thought I'd mention it.
Edit:- Oh, and its more like 600 lumens, I rode with someone who has one, last week.

Captain_CrashFree MemberI see the bow-tie wearers have been busy. Its a pretty little light.
Where are the cooling fins though ?.
Q: When a nuke explodes, doesn't it generate an EMP ?.
If so, then the one thing a light could never be, is nuke-proof….

Captain_CrashFree Member"It is not about hard cash why I do it it is just a fun hobby"
You're crazy 😀 , your output is prodigious, you've 3 lights on the go, as far as I can tell.
Just where do you sleep, is it next to the lathe, the mill, or the computer ??.
Yeah, the STW crowd can be awesome.
Keep it up 😉

Captain_CrashFree MemberTrout.
That pic is classic now. I love the tongue in cheek atmos about it, but also that you put yourself up for it.
Very uplifting to see that logo and to know that it is the result of an STW team effort. This forum can be so great, and it seems that there are some really talented types here.
Looking forward to the Trout Ad on here, but sorry you got stuck for additional cost. Looking back on previous posts, you were hardly making much on a light anyway, now you've got the extra cost of the ad to cope with.
Perhaps we should consider that you're probably buying your components at retail prices, unlike the big boys.
Anyway, the logo is fantastic.
😀
Captain_CrashFree MemberAM.
Good point.
However, I suspect that you may find, all you have to do is replace the LEDs themselves.
Looking at the build and spec, I'm guessing that all you have to do is replace the XP-Es with XP-Gs.
If thats true, then upgrade may be nominal.
Just an Idea. Obviously Trout would have to confirm this, before you go messing with your light.
🙂
CC.
Captain_CrashFree MemberYeah, its a good piccy.
How long ago did you take that picture Trout ?.
CC.
Captain_CrashFree MemberHow about a simple animation of a trout leaping from the water, using similar style of graphics to the one posted for your logo.

Nice going, you seem to have appointed yourself forum police there. Well done 🙄
**** me, what is going on here. Some guy is thinking of making a light (something we all might be interested in….)
and some a-h*les chops his head off before he even gets started.GM: Where do you live, 14th century Japan ?, behead anyone who lands on your beach, before they offer the words "I come in peace".
Have you read the thread ?, this guy appears to have helped Trout, although this hasn't been confirmed.
For all we know, the light you all are wanting to buy from Trout, might in some small part, be what it is due to this guy's input.
You're totally out of order !.

Captain_CrashFree MemberYeah, been out myself since Feb, with nothing on the horizon related to my career.
Trouble is at 40, I'm not exactly at the head of the que for re-training 🙁
Difficult to let go of my chosen career, but reality is, its all gone East.
So, I'm now thinking of what I'm going to do next.
Sorry to learn of yet another joining the jobless stats.
Good luck to you.

Captain_CrashFree MemberOne farmer may encouter may different types of people riding mountian bikes around his land.
Just because you lot may be a good bunch, theres no way he can tell that you're not lycra-louts, riding where you shouldn't dropping litter anywhere you like and just generally disrespecting the countryside, etc.
Or on the other hand, perhaps you are people who are just looking around the place, with perhaps the intent of returning after dark and trying to help yourself to fuel or equipment. In these times of recession, country-side crime has increased alot.
The farmer simply can't tell what your intentions are.
I wouldn't have any problem answering simple questions about where I've been and where I'm going, so long as the person asking the questions exercised a polite tone, etc.
But I must stress that regardless of their personal prejudice, I believe Farmers should still speak politely when they approach anyone on a bridle way through their land, etc.
But it isn't just about good MTBers and bad MTBers.
Theres another side to this. I've encountered "country-folk" who think that the countryside belongs personally to them and they aint up for sharing.
Thats a sad attitude imo, but one I feel I have to put up with and ignore. If I'm exercising a legitimate right of way, then theres little they can really say, and most know that, regardless of any comments made at the time.I'm sorry to learn of yet another negative interaction between farmers and MTBers, but with such a wide range of characters involved, will it ever improve. As I pointed out, you may be a good bunch, but we all know there are bike riders who don't seem to treat the countryside with the same appreciation and respect as others. And some farmers can be very grumpy indeed.

Just what I plan to have on my next build.

Captain_CrashFree MemberDon't be bullied by any retailer into buying anything, "I can hopefully sort a test ride on the Orbea but the shop in question use the terms "fitting" and "before you buy".
You've got the folding, and they want it, which places you with the "upper hand".
If they want your money and make a sale, they need to earn it. Jimbos comments are along the right lines, imo.
Haven't Orbea just bought the assets of OneCarbon ?.

Captain_CrashFree MemberI got caught by a camera once.
The road had recently been revised to a 30 from a 40.
I was doing 40, didn't see the new sign, which was very small, and got kodak'd.
Turns out the Police had been naughty, they should never have erected that camera where it was, and since then it has been removed.
Word was people who'd been caught by that particular camera could get their points removed because the camera shouldn't have been there.
I didn't bother. I was doing 40 spot-on (where once you were allowed to do so) in what had become a 30. I was, unintentionaly speeding.
Strange thing is, the road hasn't been changed. Just one day, whomever makes these decisions, decided to reduce the limit form 40 to 30.
Its just my opinion, but speeding in a 30 is very bad. As we all know, 30s are usually for urban areas where pedestrians may be. Its the presence of peds in urban 30s which is why I stick to the 30 more strictly than any other speed limit. You can't justify speeding past people who are just a few feet from your car.
Thats my view on 30s.CC.
Captain_CrashFree MemberTJ.
Hat off to you there.
Perhaps some of my posts have been, err, a bit visceral.
I eat some of my words.
😉
CC.
Captain_CrashFree MemberTJ, Hah, hah-hah, hah !.
You sligh old fox, you nearly got me debating with you then.
"find a post where I have done that"
Yeah, and I'll come back with something, then you'll say "yeah, well thats right" and we'll be into debating/arguing.
Nearly got me.
😆
We agree on something !, I am staggered !. Arrogance and losing-touch. I believe it happens to any party in power for too long…
However, as I'm just about to hit the send post button, I think to myself( and please forgive me, according to . I am not intelligent enough for poltical debate).
Still, there are distinct differences between when a Tory gov reaches its "sell-by-date" and when a labour Gov does the same.So when the three people in the UK who can be 4rsed to vote, do so (and those of your who don't vote really should be ashamed of yourselves, imo). Are they just deciding how they want things to end for the incumbent, one or three elections later ?.
In the case of the Tories, they'll cut everything to the bone become arrogant and out-of-touch and get voted out by a generation who can't recall Blair,Brown, Smith, Blunket, Harperson, etc.
In the case of the Labour, they just completely wreck the economy, become arrogant and out-of-touch.
So prehaps we're just really deciding what mess we think we'd prefer to face, at some point in the future.
Uplink. I'd never suggest that one should look to the Gov, any Gov, for providing contentiment with life. IMO my contentiment is my job. Which would be higher, if I could find one……
Oh !, thats it, I've got to go.
🙂
CC.
Captain_CrashFree MemberTJ is in with the numbers now, watchout.
Who was it said
"If voting actually worked, they'd abolish it"
TJ, I've seen enough from you to know that we'll never agree on politics and were I ever to feel ashamed about anything again, then it would be when I read some of your posts and see you pick out the stats and pseudo facts that conveniently support your arguements, and ignoring any incovenient truths about Labour.
You're a selective fact machine, but no worse, I suppose, than the people we let loose in Westminster. And in the end, thats what its really about with you and others on here. You know best and must win, win, win any debate. The rest of us should learn from you.
Well, I've learnt something from you, debating politics with you can only be seen as an exercise in patience, and I've no time for that now.
Instead, I'm scanning the employment wasteland that is the UK, after a record 3rd successive term labour Gov, for a job now.
"An end to Boom and Bust"
My **** 4rse.
He was Arrogant to even claim that, and insulted all in the UK when he thought we'd believe him.
Brown and Co are arrogant and out-of-touch. Just as the Tories were in the mid 90s.

Please, stop it, I'm aching from the laughter !.
"Or was that the only dig you can make about gordon brown as you don't have the intelligence for political debate"
LOL at the DOT
Are you serious ?. shouldn't that read"as you don't have the foolishness for political debate on here with those who pick and choose FACTS and Stats to suit their own political leanings."
No, I am not that foolish. To try and debate with dyed in the wool Labour-Lovers like TJ and ., would be a waste of my mentally disabled life. 🙄
