Average speed comparisons are a bit pointless, there is a big difference between a commute through london and a commute through the countryside.
Traffic, Lights, Crossings etc play a big part in your average speed in how much slowing down and accelerating you have to do.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberI do 44 mile round trip, consistently 3 times a week but when work doesnt get in the way i do 4.
In the summer I could do an extra 8 miles each way, not so sure I would want to in the pissing rain in the winter.
Decent kit is a must, clothing, bike etc
Disagree about the commuter miles being a chore, puts me in a really good mood before work and I sit there looking forward to riding home (except for rain…)
BuzzlightyearFree MemberIn an effort to improve the braking i recently swapped the standard discs for some old shimano ones i had lying in the shed. Braking has been vastly improved, no more brake judder from the front!
BuzzlightyearFree MemberIm part of that thread, i dont recall anyone having a 60, most have a 51,54 or 57. Ive got a 54.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberI’ve covered about 500 miles on mine now, just tonight i have had to tru the rear, tension throughout was a bit uneven with a few non driveside spokes having lost all tension.
Will see how they go from now, all i had heard was good reviews on them.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberBig thanks to Dom, emailed him about a lower top cap. He found one and sent it out to me along with a mug!
BuzzlightyearFree MemberI am not overly impressed with the Lyras, have the same experience as Drp. Alot of vibration from the front and noisy from the rear. Interested to hear ow you get on with the TRP @Somafunk.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberTLR, yup much faffing on the front, used a vice and some molegrips. Im also not happy with how much the front guard sticks up, ive got some metal brackets to make up an extender to get the guard lower.
I made up some spacers out of old TF tuned nylon shock bushing to get the rear guard closer, worked a treat.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberI used a sunken caliper nut and then what i think was a long disc caliper bolt from my spares box:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-caliper-brake-sunken-nut/rp-prod17557
BuzzlightyearFree MemberWell this took a long long time. Fitted P35 chromoplastics and a Tubus Airy Rack. Alot of trial and error getting the rack and guards stays nicely round the calipers.
Fitted the rear guards directly to the rack so i can take both off together with just 4 bolts and get the knobbies back on. The bike will mainly serve me for my 44 round trip commute which i do 3 or 4 times a week so it will stay like this the majority of the time.
Still to cut the steerer, I want to drop the bars more but i still cant find a small top cap cone spacer.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberI am 178cm, I have a 56 equilibrium and also felt it was to long, it has a 90mm stem on it now. My 54 tripster with its 100mm stem is pretty much exactly the same length as my equilibrium, I can put them next to each other and take some pics if it will help? I’m really glad I went for the 54, the 57 would have been way to long and the head tube would have put me sky high. The 54 actually has a 55 tt and 54 st, the 56 equilibrium has a 56 tt and 53 st.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberIve not fitted them yet but will be, its going to involve some creative bending of the guard stays but im sure they will fit on fine with a rack. Soma has posted pictures of his with this set-up earlier.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberGreat stuff eshoote, please keep us updated with your progress, do you have a blog?
Ive covered 88 miles on mine now commuting, i currently have 28c gp4 seasons and they are fine on dry paths/light gravel. Had a really annoying creaking, after taking the BB off and re greasing everything it turned out to be the rear qr was not quite tight enough!
The rear brake on mine is a bit annoying, noticeable engaging noise when the pads hit the rotor and move in the caliper, had it apart but cant see much i can do about it. Anyone else’s do this?
Riding it like a loony, its just so comfortable over rough ground and dodgy roads compared to my old road bike.
Tubus Airy Ti rack should be turning up this week.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberDoes anybody know if you can get a smaller fsa conical spacers? The current is 15mm and would ideally like a 7.5mm to get the bars a bit lower.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberRe routed the cabling this evening, wasn’t convinced by how freeborn had done it. They had crossed the gear cabling over down the down tube and the rear brake outer round the head tube and up over the top tube. I can see why they did it to stop the outers rubbing on the head tube but it left a lot of outer that was affecting my OCD.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberM Part sticky cable guides will be fine.
I dont see the advantage of drilling a hole apart from making it alot harder when taking the post off.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberWOW!
I now understand what you mean by just taking this bike everywhere, it is seriously fun, picked it up today, really good service from Freeborn.
Just had a quick spin for the initial set-up, really glad i went for the 54, the 57 would definitely have been to long and upright.
First Ti bike, how does copter tape look on it and is it worth doing?
Off for a proper ride tomorrow.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberThere is little point in a UHD screens under 60″, the physical limitations of the nodes in our eyes cannot take in the detail. Under 60″ yes the picture will looks pin sharp but you will not be able to see the detail. Go view the same material on an 80″+ screen and get the viewing distance correct and the picture comes alive, your find yourself looking all over the screen.
BuzzlightyearFree Member@somafunk This is my equilibrium with a tortec velocity rack and front rollers, would like a better rack than the velocity, will go with a tubus fly but not sure i can afford the Ti version yet.
I have some 28c GP 4Seasons on it now which will be going on the tripster. Need to buy some new guards, chromoplastics are the obvious but does anyone else have any suggestions?
Also did anyone get this mount with theirs? Ive seen it in a few reviews:
BuzzlightyearFree MemberGreat news! I am in no rush for mine just yet, still need to get some bits for it. Trying to decide if i can justify the Ti Tubus Fly rack…
BuzzlightyearFree MemberIve also ordered from Freeborn, silly not to go with them at that price.
I am 178cm and have gone for a 54, ive long legs and a short upper so the 57 would have been to long.
Up for a ride, i am surrey way.
BuzzlightyearFree Member@somafunk, thank you for those pictures! That has helped massively, my only niggle preventing me from ordering one was the rack mounting. I have just gone ahead and ordered one! Its main role will be to replace my Genesis Equilibrium which I commute 135 miles a week on but plan on using it for a bit of everything.
BuzzlightyearFree Member@Somafunk, did you have any issues with fitting the rear rack with the seat stay mounted caliper? The caliper mount looks intentionally designed to move it inwards away and the rack mount is a little higher than normal. is clearance for the rack ok?
BuzzlightyearFree MemberThanks Soma, what you have described so far really has made me want to get it even more, it sounds just what i am after.
I am 5’10” 1/2 with a 32.8″ inseam, ive got long legs and a short upper so im pushing towards the 54 which actually has a 55 tt. I currently ride a 56 Genesis Equilibrium but have a 90mm stem on it.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberVery nice, im looking at getting one of these as a long distance fast commuter.
Is that the 57? Im struggling to decide between the 57 or 54, if you dont mind me asking how tall are you? inside leg etc. Thanks
BuzzlightyearFree MemberBe-careful for what disc frame you go for with regards to rack mounting. With the calipers mounted on the chain stay you can pretty much mount any rack, some frames have the caliper mounted on the seat stay which will often mean your have to use a disc specific rack which makes and ugly addition even worse by how wide they are.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberIf your buying just for commuting, plan on riding in all weather with loaded panniers then i would definitely go for disks.
You also have to factor in with the amount of mileage a 20mile each way commute racks up you will put alot of wear on the rims. I wore out a set of rims in a year.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberI do 22miles each way, three or four times a week.
I have a Genesis equilibrium, with full guards with long flaps and panniers. Ive covered 7000 miles on it now and its comfortable, fast and fun to ride. However im just about fed up with how crap the brakes are in the rain, im switching to a fast tourer or CX bikes.
My current list is:
Kenesis ATR Tripster
Sabbath September Disc
Genesis Croix de fer
Charge Plug
Planet x Kaffenback 2
Whyte SuffolkBuzzlightyearFree MemberYup got a lot of kites,
Benson Deep space
Also got a Revolution, couple of Hq ones and an old flexifoil stranger. kitesurfing I have all slingshot fuels, 7m and. 13m
BuzzlightyearFree MemberSitting in 8th at the moment, might have to start logging my weekend riding to try to catch up as it appears you all above me are pulling away. Only been logging my commutes so far.
Thanks for that bikehike site Ton, looks good that and will use it to try and find some new commute routes.
BuzzlightyearFree Memberibnchris
My commute is 22 miles each way from Caterham to Hounslow, google maps walking directions for CR3 to TW7 and you will get the rough idea. My average speed is pretty good until i hit Kingston and then the traffic slows me up.
I know someone that commutes into central London from Sevenoaks so i could ask him what route he takes, you would just have Sevenoaks hill to contend with!
BuzzlightyearFree MemberMy set-up consists of:
Bike:
Genesis Equilibrium, full guards with long flaps, rack, panniers, conti gatorskins.Winter Clothing:
Gore Bike Wear Power 2.0 Windstopper Soft Shell
Light pac n bag waterproof that goes on top of windstopper for heavy rain.
Cheap Lidl/Aldi Baselayers.
Various Dhb Bibs.
Gore Bike Wear Countdown Goretex Gloves.
M&S Walking socks
Lidl thin summer cycling socks
Shimano Shoes
Castelli Toe Covers
Northwave Extreme over shoes.
2 x Buffs, one round neck and one under helmet.I am also lucky enough to have a hot shower at work and a dedicated cyclist drying room, the shower really helps!
BuzzlightyearFree MemberNice effort – mine is also 22 miles but only once a week.
How long does it take you?
I wear normal road shoes with thick socks and Endura neoprene overshoes. No issues this year with cold feet but the weather has been quite mild. This combo kept them warm last year down to -8 apart from the last 5 miles where my whole body starts to freezeThanks, the fastest ive done it is 1 hour 10 and the slowest is 1 hour 50! I average 1 hour 20.
Ive currently got normal road shoes with Castelli neoprene toe covers and Northwave Extreme overshoes on top of these. This combined with a thin sock and long walking sock and with the shoes done up loose i just about manage on the coldest days. I tried Endura MT500 and my feet froze, I think I have poor circulation down there.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberYup, 22 miles each way, 3 times a week. Only bail on heavy heavy rain days, ive got soaked this past few months more than I can ever remember.
Its all about prep, i have all my gear ready to go in the morning so i can just jump on the bike. The hardest part of the commute is from my bed to the bike, ive got better at forcing myself to get up.
Having the right clothes really help, ive most struggled keeping my feet warm.
BuzzlightyearFree Member6th, 562miles all commuting, think I got rained on every ride…
I’ve done another 100 off-road but I don’t bother to record them.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberI do 22 miles each way 3/4 times a week, you could do that mileage comfortably 2 times a week.
I started off driving half way and then cycling the rest, i did this 5 times a week but i got fed up of packing the car up and finding somewhere to leave it. So i started riding all the way but less days, i prefer it this way as it makes the two other non riding days bearable.
Have a look at the bikes on trains restrictions, as some restrictions only start at certain stations before it is enforced. So you could get on a travel up to the start of the restriction and then ride the rest. I know this was the case on my old Hastings Line when i lived in Kent.
BuzzlightyearFree MemberVery nice, tempted to get one myself, I have a normal equilibrium that I use for commuting and have just replaced the rims from worn out surfaces. They disc version wasn’t out when I bought mine but would have got that.
I would say you need some mud flaps on the guards, i originally bought the sks pro flaps that fit straight on but I still got huge amounts of spray up. I went searching everywhere for some decent flaps and finally found the raceblade long flaps for sale in 35mm, they fit straight on the chromoplastic p35.

BuzzlightyearFree MemberI agree in the winter it is pretty hard to average that, I average that in the summer but have struggled since October.
There is a endomondo winter challenge running already in this thread,(just commuting though):
