I paid by debit card and had the transaction refunded on 2 Jan however for some reason Garmin have taken £95.99 from my account today. Perhaps they need the money!

Broadband – it varies from a damp piece of string to fibre, it just depends where you live. Mobile broadband may be a better option.

A blocked road can mean there’s no option other than to turn around as there may not be a detour but it’s rare. At least there are very few, if any, traffic jams. I don’t think it’s a problem.

I only wear a midge hat around once a year in the garden. Just keep moving faster than midges and you’ll be fine.

Food shopping is a bit restrictive with the Coop however Tesco do a click and collect where you meet their van in a car park. It can be difficult at first not walking around a supermarket to choose what you want although not going to a supermaket has its advantages (if you hate shopping). For other stuff you’d get used to buying online and there’s the huge advantage that Hermes and Yodel don’t deliver to Skye, they use local agents instead.

I haven’t tried Affinity but it is on my list as updating Adobe software is out of the question.

I’m attempting to learn Python at the moment and use Visual Studio Code. There may be better IDEs but it seems to work ok for me and it’s free.

It may not fit what you’re after but Eat Me Cafe is great although it’s only small so fills up quickly.

Would something constructive or creative help? A rigid heddle loom is fairly straightforward and you get to see things coming together very quickly.

I bought an FS 94 last year for an area of grass and lots of rushes. No complaints so far and it started first time last month after 5 months of hibernation. I changed the metal blade to an autocut moving head due to a large amount of stones and link fencing to avoid.

vongassit – where’s the last photo taken, the one with the car in?

I’d take a photo in Braes but if I let go of my car it may disappear without trace down a pothole.

I was approached last year by a vlogger for a free night’s accommodation in return for being mentioned in her “holiday” video. I turned it down and although someone did put her up for a night she also spent a night in March on the Isle of Skye in her car! Why should I pay for someone else’s holiday.

There are some businesses in Skye for sale on here http://www.asgcommercial.co.uk/

Not sure whether it’s worth trying a commercial site

I can’t comment on price or easy of fitting as the house was a new build but we have Selkie board that may be worth a look.

I’ve replaced my RoadID this week due to a change of address. With discount (they offer them regularly) and free postage it cost me $15 / £12 so didn’t hit the customs charges.

I always ride on my own and rarely carry a wallet or cards as they’re something else to lose and there aren’t many shops around. If nothing else at least it helps me remember my own landline number.

I only pay £15 a year for hosting with TSOHOST for a simple WordPress site I did myself. A lot of WordPress themes are responsive, (i.e. change according to whether you’re viewing from a mobile, tablet or PC) and may not require any additional work.

As wwaswas said for only a few pages on a straight forward site I’d consider moving rather than being locked in

Does that need to be armoured shielded CAT6 or can I use external shielded CAT6 as I will be burying the cable in pipe?

Also does the shielded cable need to be earthed (the faceplates I have are CAT5 unshielded) or will I be able to get away without earthing the cable?

GFS – no roofspace and the foil backed insulation means planB is out. I can’t get a mobile signal unless I stand outside

Ah jon-n thanks for the offer but I’m on Skye

jon-n – I wasn’t aware of the problem with different ring mains. I have got a PoE AP (Ubiquiti) and although was going to power it from the holiday let side I could as you suggested power it from my side to overcome the potential problem. I don’t think the AP would work in the void due to the foil backed insulation.

handyman – that looks cheap and may be worth a look at that price

croqthomas – those connectors in your link are out of my price bracket and needs. I’ve had difficulty getting anything done on my house so having something that I can replace myself without touching the bit of cable between the inside and outside of the house (should anything fail) and rely on someone else. Ideally I’d go for one through cable but in my circumstances I’d prefer some accessible joins

The RJ45 sockets are to connect the AP in on the holiday let side and in my house to connect my router. The other option would be to have a hole in the walls with the cable sticking out but that would look a bit naff

I agree I don’t need gigabit ethernet especially when my broadband connection is only 6Mbps and is unlikely to get better any time soon

    gofaster / deadkenny

that was my initial thought and I’ve already got a couple of the Ubquiti nanostations however high prevailing winds between the buildings made me consider cable instead

    thanks for the info

One building is my home the other is a holiday let that I need wifi in. Fibre is out of the question on price grounds alone. I only need an AP in the holiday let so no need for a switch in there.

I’m not trying to make it complicated but I need something that once the hole through the wall is done I can do the rest myself as I’m struggling to find anyone to do the whole job.
