Tight enough so that the end of the 9mm rod shears off. This allows me to try and fudge a replacement with a rear hope qr skewer before giving up and buying a replacement maxle.

Got some Campag bib shorts in the sale for the same price as the DHB Aeron Pros I thought I wanted. Very pleased with them, been through the washing machine several times a week for a few months and still look like new. None of the stitching has come loose like it has on other bibs I’ve had in the past. Pad was comfier after one wash. Wear them for both on and off road under baggies. Wouldn’t change them.

As an aside looking at the map suggests it should be possible to link with Stainburn from the bottom of the Black or Descent line. Looks like a bridleway goes past Folly Hall and Nether Timble to the YW carpark. Has anyone ridden this? What’s it like? Don’t mind if it’s a bit dull as long as its rideable.

Rode it tonight. I am not sure that I would bother again.

Parked at Stainburn, rode the red to the top of the descent line. Down the descent line to the road at the bottom. Turn right, short sharp hill, then road all the way down to a farm. Don’t go down the farm track, stay on the road up the hill for 30m then take the bridleway to Folly Hall. Flat, across sheep fields, few gates, nothing memorable. Up and the through the extremely rapey looking farm at Folly Hall. Through an unmarked gate on the far side and descend down a farm track. Cross the stream and this is where it gets a bit odd. I couldn’t find the bridleway, so had to climb over an easy style and take the footpath for a couple of hundred metres. As you reach the stream again, turn 90 degrees right to pick up the unmarked bridleway again. Then follows another trek up and across sheep fields. Long tussocky grass, 15%+ and sheep sh*t everywhere. I pushed, others might not. At the top the signs reapear again (6 dales trail?) and you pick up the single track all the way to Swinsty. This should be good – when hardpacked like tonight – except there are 5 bar gates every 100 yards or less. Slow going.

At Swinsty turn right then left on the road. Here I took the permissive bridleway to Fewston and not really knowing where I was going, just lapped the woods to I came across the new trails.

As it turns out I had found the end, so pushed all the way up to the top, checking out the trail. Really good fun actually. Nothing technical despite the obvious features, but really good fun. My favourite bit is the jump into steps. On the way up I was concerned about overshooting some of the landings but the trail is cleverly built to actually control your speed. That isn’t to say you couldn’t pin it, but the gradient is very shallow and every so often they will throw in a flat corner with no berm or a corner with logs buried 3/4 deep horizontally across the corner, just to make you think twice about leaning over too hard.

From the bottom I took the permissive bridleway back to Fewston and then Swinsty. Not fancying the way I had come to much – and knowing that it was quietening down at the reservoir – I crossed the dam and took the cheeky north path round Swinsty. Up the road all the way to Norwood edge. Twisty, rooty singletrack in Norwood plantation, crossed the road and then then finished the red loop back to the car.

Good two hours. I’d go back to Swinsty just to have a play on the new stuff again.

MartinHutch is the man to ask if he is around. Always knows the best routes in this part of the world. Last time I asked he said:

My only recommendation is to keep going on the BWs across the road back down to Lofthouse and follow them all the way back to Ramsgill. Otherwise you’ll miss the best bits, really.”

It was all £70s for me from Leeds.

£70 fuel there, £70 fuel back, £70 tolls there, £70 tolls back, £70 odd for an early booked Eurotunnel return (might have been an offer).

16 hours non-stop. Easier coming back as was setting off after a night’s sleep rather than a day’s work.

UK train? Probably cheaper to drive to the moon.

How many people? Two or more and it starts to get competitive. Plenty of other upsides too. It is a fairly easy drive on the toll roads with cruise control.

Potternewton Lane from Chapel Allerton to Meanwood. Straight on past Waitrose on Green Road, round past the school and into Meanwood Park, pick up the MVT there. Or if you wanted a bit off off road… Take Stainbeck lane out of CA, cross over stainbeck road onto Parkside Road. Right at the roundabout up tongue lane. At the crest of the hill, opposite the school, take a bridleway on your left, follow it downhill (bearing left at the fork) all the way back to Parkside road. Turn right and go down the road to pick the MVT up in your direction (track on your right just before ring road that takes you round to the Cow tunnel).

Sorry – should have said that it was the AC650b in Moonglu, not the TB. Give them a call though, they might have one in too.

Sky’s whole premise is that getting up a climb at the theoretical maximum pace will always be quicker than jumping in and out of attacks.

The reason though that attacks can be successful is if you lose the wheel of the man in front (because he attacked), then you lose the [much smaller than on the flat, but still relevant] assistance, plus maybe something psychological.

So if two men (Wiggins and Froome) rode up a climb, then Froome could win by attacking Wiggins.
If Wiggins had a strong team around him, pacing and protecting him up a climb, allowing him to achieve the optimal possible time, then it is likely that he would beat Froome, who would post a sub-optimal time by attacking.

    Who is better?

Froome. Because he could also ride like Wiggins, but Wiggins couldn’t ride like Froome.
Wiggins. Because in identical circumstances, his optimal time would be less than Froome’s.

Who knows, who cares. It depends on the circumstances.

    Where are you Rik?

Moonglu in Ripon have one hanging up behind the counter. A couple of weeks ago they were just waiting for some 650b forks to build it up. It is the lad who works there’s bike, so I’m sure he would let you have a play on it.

Queing up at stage three, I was watching all these people with their bikes floating in the air, hanging on to the bars. I thought they were just messing about. It wasn’t until I got up on the start hill that I realised that it was involuntary!

I did exactly the same in 2010, albeit when the tax benefits were a bit more weighted in your favour. With some of the added incentives my work threw in, plus some abuse of the reserve-in-store/online sale, I ended up with £1500 RRP worth of bike and components for about £600 in 12 interest free payments. Spent another few hundred on it myself over the next year (dropper, tyres etc…). 2010 was just before the explosion in prices and boardmans were aggressively priced for the component spec. Quite happy really.

Snapped both the chainstays the other day, though. Managed to persuade Halfords to sell me some more this week for £100. Fitted them today, quite straightforward once I got the big hammer out. Keeps me on the dirt whilst the Nicolai fund grows…

Wow – thanks everyone, I’ve got an OS Map and had found pretty much all of those, so the advice around which to go up and which to go down is very useful. Cheers

Duane – I’m a grumpy bugger, you don’t want to ride with me! :-). No seriously, I’m not sure of timings etc. yet and still a small [and receding] chance that I may have to work so I couldn’t give you a time I’m afraid. Might see you out and about though…

Most don’t like you to take them out of the country and if you want to share the driving then the insurance add ons start to add up.

Europcar always worked out cheapest when I have hired a van in this country and if you tell them you are going to cheer on Tommy V then they might cut you a deal 🙂

Adam who manages Enterprise in Hunslet is a good bloke and will tell you what the best way to do it is. Don’t mention me though, I blew up one of their brand new Nissan vans coming back from Llandegla last winter…

How about buy a second hand one, get a months insurance, good breakdown cover and then sell it when you get back. Haggle hard enough and it won’t have deprecated at all.

For me it is where you are blasting down a trail with the seat low, popping off things, drops etc. and are suddenly faced with a big hill. Stood up you power into it, aiming for the top. Half way up, you realise you are not going to make it, instead of failing, seat comes up, handful of gears and spin over the top. Carry on the ride.

The other advantage is that I now run my seat higher at the top of its travel than I ever did with a fixed post. No need to compromise pedalling efficiency so that it is right 90% of the time any more.

Loaded the car this evening with board, bike and sleeping bag and set off for Aviemore. The plan was two days there and then call at Glentress on the way back. I turned round at Kirkby Lonsdale. -4, blizzard and untreated roads. Didn’t seem like the best idea anymore.

We took a novice around MBR, Minotaur and Dragon’s Back this weekend. He managed it all (or at least only pushed when we did!), but he enjoyed Minotaur the most.

I’d recommend a tear around it anyway.
