It was absolutely inevitable someone would post that, however it’s hard to get an idea of cost without naming the car. Without wanting to go down the usual path, I really don’t know what this forum’s beef is with Audi, BMW, etc. It gets a bit tedious.

I’m not after anything other than bog-standard, I just want a stub of metal to attach my rack to.

    POSTED 1 HOUR AGO # REPORT-POST

It’s not iCloud though, it isn’t activated, but thanks.

“But in the early days pre ’96ish mountain biking was new and people where amazed at what people where doing on bikes”

Yer smelly arse. I was right in to it by then and everyone thought I was a right wally.

It obviously varies hugely on location, but modern offshore windfarms are generally producing power a significant amount of the time. 40-50% capacity factor is not uncommon, and bear in find some of these are now massive (500MW plus), with total capacities now at least in the same ballpark are fossil burners.

They are still very expensive that’s for sure.

There’s a lot of time and effort being spent on direct drive as servicing and maintaining windfarms (especially offshore) is where a lot of the cost is, so simpler mechanics are clearly an advantage. As a result id imagine there’s a few different avenues being explored by the manufacturers.

Coffeeking – You sound like you know more than me (not hard), the rare metals line was being discussed on the trade press but in retrospect it was fairly vague.

Regarding the rare metals argument, it’s the next generation of direct drive turbines that use considerably more as they do away with a gearbox and do everything with the generator. It is the scarcity of these metals that has partially slowed their development.

Those who aren’t keen on them should try and get used to them, especially if they live on the coast. The amount of money currently being spent, along with the number that will be built over the next few years is MIND BOGGLING!

I’m the same (ish, it’s not built yet).

I just moved and they did check my previous salary with my old employer (very quickly). My new contract was covered in “we may withdraw the offer if your info isn’t correct” type patter as well. Big corporation to massive corporation right enough.

    “gearfreak – Member
Before you get carried away with this renewables malarky, need to worry about this”

In wind this is less of an issue for existing technology, and relates more to the emerging technology turbines that have no gearboxes and do everything within the generator.

“The cost of decommissioning offshore platforms is massive, however, those offshore windfarms are the biggest legacy anyone is going to be left with.
    (I’ll get my coat.)”

While I’d agree the cost of building and running offshore windfarms is very high, I’m not sure the decommissioning costs are going to be comparable to nuclear.

“Can recommend the road from Dunoon to Loch Striven for high speed thrills. Though the front end coming off the ground over some crests is a bit interesting !”

StuCol – Agreed, I was brought up living on that road. There are some pretty quick bits!

Rupert, (or as I prefer to call you “someone else’s second log-in for trolling”), there is nothing wrong with getting a full-suss but a Patriot will be overkill for your needs, after the Dawes If you’re keen on getting an Orange, look at an ST4 or Five, but get along to a bike shop that sells them and have a test ride. There’s a list of dealers on the Orange website.

To answer your Miss Daisy question, there are all levels there. Don’t worry about racing and enjoy yourself, many others will be.

There is nothing to the track other than the length, close proximity of other riders, altitude, and heat. There are a couple of technical bits that are made more technical by bottle necking; there’s one bit on the quali which has a piss-easy ladder drop that looks like the Llandegla car park at the top of it with lots of parked-up shiny Lapierres and Fives.

Staying is AdH is good for the convenience on foot of everything, but as others have said the Allemont campsite is more chilled and doesn’t feel like the set of The Shining.

First night ride in years (about 17!) last night with my new 872 and was absolutely blown away with it although I don’t have much to compare it to. As various threads have said fairly floody, so I had it on the bar and a torch headlight. Battery lasted full Whinlatter red on full power most of the time.

Yeah that’s what I was getting at. Test drove an FR and Cupra before Ed30 and ride wasn’t nearly as good as the Golf’s. Didn’t find switch from 17″ to 18″ wheels an issue on the second car, and looked much better.

I had an ’05 for three years from launch, then an ’08 Ed30 for three years, 150,000 miles between the two. First was manual, second DSG. GTI did 34-35 on long journeys, Ed30 did 28-29, not sure how much was gearbox and how much different engine. Both ‘boxes great. Refined on the motorway, fantastic chassis off it (not the same as a Leon). A genuine do everything car. I’d still be in one of some description if it wasn’t for work car scheme change.

This is a sore thread. My Dad binned my bronze Cindercone (trying to establish year, i think ’92 or ’93) a few years back.

I don’t what all the fuss is about, I wear one all the time. There’s all sorts that can go wrong around the modern home these days. Usual anti-DH and everything associated with it thread, sorry topic.

PS Do you like my Banksy mug? My daughter got me it for my birthday which is impressive as she’s only 1.

Good to see the “serious cyclists” frothing at the mouth again over this sort of thing. I mean imagine riding a bike with the wrong type of clipless pedal…

Agreed, although the slightly chaotic nature and obviously amazing track of India is a nice change to the usual sterile Middle East effort about this time in the season.

Possibly a bit late in the year now, but see if there are any Orange demo days planned to have a ride of the 160 and Patriot.

If this thread was better placed (while everyone was on company time), it’d be a classic. It’s got it all; young whippersnapper with a bit of lip, the Scotch versus the English (with token Welsh folk trying to talk their place up), punctuation pedantry, massive potential for a political left v right tangent, and an Edinburgh theme holding it all together. Brilliant stuff.

    Project – it’s “uni’s” not “uni,s” :D
