We rode Ben Lomond top to bottom two weeks ago; apart from the “Grannytrap”. Have to agree with TJ here, has the boy not just gone round it?

Yes loads of post, but it’s fine as the large is longer, so there’s room for me. I do full days, trail centres, Munroes, etc on it no trouble at all. I bought it for the Megaavalanche and thought I’d be selling it as soon as I was home. My mate is your height and has a 15″ which he loves, in fact some people say the small’s a better bike, with some guys near enough my height riding them.

How tall/gangly are you fella? I ride a 17″ Blood and I’m 6’3″, it’s seems to be the length of the cockpit that’s most noticeable between sizes.

The 520d is pretty competitive on the tax front, granted the car’s value is higher (though not much) than a decentish specced Mondeo/Insignia/Passat but the difference is nominal. I’ve just ordered a 5 Series today for that exact reason, it’s cheaper.

Economy on the mk5 GTI seems to vary car to car. My Edition 30 is often better than the standard GTI I used to have, although even that is generally high 20s if careful (30mpg at an ansolute push). I change the display if driving harder, as it’s too depressing (low 20s on both cars).

That said, I’ve seen plenty other drivers get better in mags, forums, etc.

“Uprated” being the word, the decent Cupra and TT had 225, the mk4 with 150 was far too heavy for the power.

What about a mk5 GTI Edition 30; much livlier chassis than either R32, bigger turbo engine from current S3, DSG gearbox, all the toys. No I’m not selling one, not at all, that wouldn’t be the reason I’m posting at all… God I feel like Arthur Daily on these threads sometimes!

    “Bye bye vRS”

Mat, I’ve driven a tdi vRS and I don’t see there being many quicker diesels out there in real world driving.

Was in looking at an A4 Avant SLine today, quite plasticky interior if you don't get the spec right. Had a look at a Passat CC, a lot of solid well finished car for the money I reckon!

Anyone driven a 2.0TFSI A4 Avant? I know it's a decent engine, but worried about scrabbling about with FWD only (quattro puts it over car scheme CO2 limit). Other option is 2.0TDI (170) quattro, anyone driven that?

Wind will shut it though it's obviously fairly common up there so needs to be pretty strong (sorry not sure how strong). A bigger problem for you is I'm fairly certain it shuts for the season this weekend, check the website.

The value of the car is irrelevant (unless your employer has placed parameters), as others have said above you simply PAYE as if the car allowance is part of your salary, though mine's shown separately for pension reasons again as outlined above.

Depending on whether or not you receive a mileage allowance as well, and to what value you may also be able to claim tax relief and get a rebate as Spongebob says.

Shameless plug alert, shameless plug alert!

    I'm selling a '56 plate 197 that hasn't missed a beat in three years. £6.5k ono, 33,000 miles.

    Sorry, couldn't resist!

PS Not sure what in SurfMatt's words is "crap to own and run" about them? Mine's a hoot to drive and cut above the old shape 172/182s etc in terms of quality. I'm gutted to be selling mine but don't use it.

Cheers BandySteve, I reckon you're right. I suppose a high roof one would be an option, but then you've got all the ferry and car park issues (and they don't look as good!). I reckon you're current set-up is the way to go.

PS My mate has a Kombi with two revolving front seats, works a treat.

Loving your T5, and your set up is exactly as I'd been thinking as I'm committed to a 5 seater for car allowance reasons.

Do you reckon a set up where the bikes sat upright with the front wheel (and potentially saddle/seatpost) removed would be too high to get a bed deck like yours above? I've farted about with mates Transporters, and it's hard to say without actually building it. I've got a Caddy Maxi just now do would have to swap before I could be let loose with tools and scaffold poles! I appreciate the back seat would need to come out.

    Cheers

GW, that was me, and at the time I acknowledged (after a while) that I'd got it wrong. Out of interest what does the **** represent?

From what I could see Hill had the rain as well, though there's an arguement the track wasn't as cut up. That's racing though.

There's nothing wrong with a 17" Blood for a gent of my proportions. The seatpost feels a bit precarious at times, but the bike is meant to be that shape.

I'm 6'3" with a large Blood (which is pretty small at 17") and I've got the 425 GD with adjustment to spare.

Oops, sorry – 1.125 I meant! 34t front which is generally okay but sometimes slightly small on very fast descents. MRP 1x guide which is fine general XC type stuff but fairly flimsy, and has no bashguard/taco etc.

    1) 1.25
    2) Never tried 1×10 on mine, but getting on well with 1×9 on it.

Welcome to a go anytime we're about, give us a shout (bunch of scotchlanders on green Commencal Supreme white Boxxers, orange Socom white Boxxers, black 951 Totems).

Uplift is on most weekends these days.

Although I'm a native, I'm in Manchester now so was having eaxctly the same thought last night, long way for a day's riding! Very good fun though. We were admiring all your bikes but especially the white Alpine 160 with the Cane Creek DB – very bloody nice.

Without wanting to go to off-topic and car geeky; whos was the silver A4 estate, been considering one and wouldn't mind knowing what it's like?

Although big drops etc do exist at Inners, the tracks are more about tight and steep techincal single track, so a 5" or so bike isn't really a major problem. The drops are completely avoidable, the only thing maybe to be aware of in advance are some of the doubles on the Matador as they are a bit blind and fast on appraoch and fairly big.

    PS

Grum, you'll have no bother at all. Virtually everything is completely rideable on a smaller bike. Plenty of folk on the uplifts who aren't riding DH bikes.

Wrightyson – Was that you lot on the Fives/Alpine 160s? All looked to be going well. Cracking day indeed – until my rear mech exploded.
