I had a ’56 plate 197 and revved the arse off it for nearly four years from new. It never missed a beat, great car.

    What a RB pit stop!!!

First corner is apparently “easy” but a high profile coming together between one of the top 5 is on the cards if anyone over does it on the start! Obvious candidate would be Hamilton, though perhaps not from the front row.

I hear you, the more everyone foams at the mouth about Alonso, the more I warm to him. I think Webber lacks the absolute raw pace, but as you say he’s made up for it through grit and determination.

    Elf +1.

More than happy with a RB or Alonso victory. I think if anything Alonso probably deserves it as he’s driven/thought his way round not having the best car.

Clever film making, set them up as a pair of tubes, then cut to the body bags, bereaved relatives etc. Not a nice job but still some of their patter earlier was awful.

    All this is just moron-baiting crap. I think you’ll struggle to find many people (apart from the crooks themselves) who think;
“No I don’t think they should crack down on benefit fraud, fair play to them the cheeky scamps.”
    It’s a lazy headline.

However, while all the clowns are whipping themselves in to a frenzy, the genuine poor get tarred with the same brush. Take a look round the poorer areas of the UK, there are not streets rammed with new motors.

I think this is a little exaggerated perhaps.

    My point Druidh is this:

In recent years the UK construction industry seems to have got it’s act together when delivering large projects such as T5 and the Olympics. This is in contrast to public perception of recent history when jobs like Wembley stadium were unmitigated disasters.

In contrast, Scotland still seems to struggle, eg Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh trams – very public over spends and fall-outs.

I then went on to say that the M74 seems to contradict this as it’s going well.

Not an earth shattering post that’s going to change the course of mankind, just a Saturday afternoon musing. All clear now?

Not sure what your point is Druidh; Wembley was a shambles from start to finish.

Sorry I’m talking recent-ish history (last 10 years or so).

I’m keen to understand why going north of the border seems to spell doom for programme and cost on major projects. The reality is if the very public contractor disputes and spiralling costs hadn’t happened, there would be far less bad press and ill feeling about the trams (arguments about distance to airport terminal aside).

Contrary to popular belief, the UK is completely capable of pulling off big construction. The Dome and Wembley are history now; T5 and the Olympics finished/are finishing on programme and budget.

Edit: I believe the M74 JV is well ahead, so maybe it’s just the East ;-)

Edit2: Though the M74 should have been done years ago!

Like it a lot, captures UK back-garden type trail really well. Not keen on sped up sections personally, but you’re not alone and all the big DVDs seem to do it these days, shame really.

Alpine 160 looking more and more like the do-it-all bike. Very nice

Fancy a crack at this, the Commencal’s dodgy paint job is in dire need of sprucing up.

Obviously you need to strip everything off for these guys, but do they deal with masking BBs, pivot areas, etc? Also if you go for the laquer option is it a case of handing in a sticker set with the frame?

    Thanks

You might get an ’05/’06 or so Mk 5 Golf TDI 140. Quick look there, ’06 plate with 40,000 miles for £5,999.

I’d agree, 36s are well suited to that bike. Triple clamps would probably annoy you more than they helped.

“Fiat 500 won car of the year in 2008.”

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you meant winning a “Best…” didn’t mean anything, as the above European supermini won such an accolade without being particularly inspiring. My mistake.

I’m not a fanboy either (I don’t have one), but a very large proportion of the UK biking public can only be so wrong.

The £4.4k doesn’t relate to Orange though does it (the frame price is fairly average), any xc/trail bike with XTR etc is surely going to be around that price? Just find it interesting why people are so against a home grown brand/bike that despite your claims of it being the MTB version of a European supermini, is consistently highly rated time and time again.

SBZ Are you saying the Five is rubbish for being £4.4k, or for being a Five.

PS You should get together with the fannies I work with, I get the “you could buy a car for that” quote virtually daily.

I know it’s bit of a trek (no pun intended), but you can hire a Session 88 from Alpine in Inners. £80 for the day. A lot I know, but a full day on an uplift or push up will give you a genuine feel for it.

Thought about that, but a taco would connect to a guide backplate, not the frame mounts direct (I believe). I find thee plate on the MRP a bit flimsy as well, so want to ditch it.

What is it “you get” (or don’t, as I take it you mean) in state education b r?

It seems to be the usual story on this thread; those that agree get various supportive back slaps and “my kid comes first” patter; those that don’t are lefty/commie/idealistic/vegetarian/lesbians who following logic “don’t put their kids first”.

There’s no getting away from the fact there are some brutal state (mainly inner city) schools in this country, getting steadily worse as fewer and fewer bright kids are sent to them. There are plenty of others however that despite having to operate with one hand behind their back by having all these thick urchins from the schemes manage to forget about class and instead produce great results and great kids.

How about taking an interest rather than making those big social sacrifices like only having one estate car, or not making it to Val D’Isere this year?

Rob, I’m still nursing my chipped (my opinion, others may say bruised) elbow from last time! Bloody great descent though, and fair play to Steeble and co for giving it a crack.
