I’ve got an 330d S Drive and live in (north) Perthshire. I drive all over the Highlands no bother on winter tyres, including up forestry roads. The only issue is they don’t make 19″ run flats, so had to forfeit puncture cover. Suppose I could get smaller wheels.

I was seriously underwhelmed on first listen while pottering about the house yesterday, however enjoyed second listen a lot more.

“Wow, well I’m really encouraged to go to scotchland for my biking holiday, sounds like a great welcoming place….
Oh no, hang on, I’m going to the Alps, phew.”

nickc, I wouldn’t base the destination of your holiday on this thread (not that you would I know). Scotland has some incredible mountain biking, however Whistler Bike Park or Les Gets it is not, which is fine.

wgm I’m bowing out. You’re changing course like a crisp packet in the wind.

For many reasons listed on this thread I don’t see anywhere in Scotland being the new Whistler any time soon. Luckily, instead, there is absolutely incredible non-lifted riding all over the place.

wgm, you’re beginning to confuse me now. Who is it that’s “letting” people go “mincing”, and where is the capital coming from “build I and they will come”, considering the OP has failed to secure £75/day to date?

Ah. So when you said “given that most ski resorts make more profit” you actually meant “given that most ski resorts make more %profit”. Riiiiight…

wgm, I would love to see it (a genuine uplifted summer season) succeed I can assure you.

Oh well that’s cleared things up. Glencoe and Whistler Blackcombe are virtually identical and directly comparable.

Loving that whitegoodman post! Sounds like an outdoor-sports management consultant, which I hope don’t exist.

I’ve found Nevis Range generally pretty helpful and friendly, and Glencoe the same (apart from the miserable bag that used to sell passes at the booth in the winter). It’s a shame, as contrary to some of the negativity on this thread, Glencoe has a lot to offer snowboarding (IMO), and as part of a joined up approach in the area could be great for mountain biking. I suspect however, there will never be the necessary capital available to do it properly.

PS The SDA track a few years back was brutal and amazing in equal measure.

althepal, there is absolutely loads of good riding in the Dunoon and surrounding area. We’ve been lucky and brought up on it, however the vast majority of it needs local knowledge.

The problem is that apart from the main walkers paths (Pucks Glen, Bishop’s Glen, Glenbranter), none of it is particularly obvious. This isn’t helped by huge timber extraction activity currently that has added lots of new forest roads, linking things up, which haven’t made it on to maps yet.

As you say, you need to give tandemwarrior a shout.

bucketboy, which forum for the editing advice? There are lots!

Ridden in Les Angels and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very laid back and un-Alpine.

Cheers. Happy with the results, although as I say, frustrating that the quality isn’t reflected on Vimeo! I’ll have a look at the forums as you suggest.

100m rope worked well. Cablecam was light enough not to cause any tension problems. The way I mounted the sailing blocks causes vibration that slows it down, so only tweak will be changing the mounts. The whole kit fits easily in a 30litre rucksack.

Might get a longer Ram mount as well (or extend it) to take the rope out of shot.

Very good work! The cablecam looks great, especially coming back up the hill which is obviously one of the advantages over my gravity fed set-up. Also like the seat post view!

What are you using to edit? I’m on Sony Movie Studio Premium ’12, but I can’t for the life of me get the quality I produce when I render to the mp4 to be reflected on Vimeo. No such issues using iMove on my iPad but it has limited functions.

Anyway, here’s my effort from last weekend. Cablecam worked well.

Aye the DSLR footage is defo over-exposed, but still looks much sharper on the original mp4 file. Haven’t touched any Vimeo settings, and prefer it over YouTube (up until now).

Edit: Yes, changed Sony settings as per Vimeo tutorial and other online research.

I’m using Sony Movie Studio Platinum.

Had a first attempt with the SLR only today. Do you reckon it’s too much ISO that’s causing it to look a bit bleached? Bog standard iPad iMovie editor app, so that probably hasn’t helped.

    Cheers for the advice fellas.

Fairly typical bit of Scottish single track (ie dark), nothing particularly original. I’m expecting a different look between the cameras, and GoPro will be used minimally.

Without wanting to pedantic PP, it’s a 4×2 unit so 40t is maximum gvw in UK at least. Bloody impressive engineering.

Re the Caddy Maxi Life, great van in all the ways you say, however with more than one sleeping in it you still need the bikes on the back.

    Evening.

Fairly successful test on a long rope today, about 60m of a 100m drum. No problems tensioning it which was my fear. Cablecam a bit slow, but not a huge gradient, so I’m hoping that will sort itself on the right track. No bike today as clan in tow.

    Good work! Looking very good!

How did you get on getting tension in to the line? That’s my only concern going 100m.

Like it fella! Been giving power some thought, apparently cordless drill motors and batteries are a good option.

No worries, been deliberating on rope for weeks anyway. I reckon accessory cord is the way forward too, found a commercial rope access supplier selling it in 120m drums pretty cheap. Got a cheap 8mm floating rope to get me going just now though.

Keep us posted of your developments!

PS Cord also pretty cheap in Go Outdoors if you get the £5 discount card.

    @bucketboy

Thanks for the inspiration. I’ve pretty much copied your design. Went for the next size up with the blocks to open up a few other rope options, but otherwise VERY similar, so cheers. Not used it in anger yet, but garden trials went well. Whole rig fits in bag nicely, unlike the last effort!

My wee one loves hers (Chariot Cougar). Wee video of a play in it at the weekend.

*flame disclaimer* Yes I know she should have her harness and helmet on, she normally does.

I find that as soon as you have to mess about (whether batteries, mounts, editing, whatever), is the moment you stop using it. I’ve got on much better with mine since I’ve started just doing really short, really basic edits like the below. Away with work this week following uplift at the weekend, and this was done in an hour on an iPad with iMovie.

The chest mount is a good perspective, but can be a bit shaky if it’s very rough, although the little white ring helps.
