Just switched from 2×10 to 1×10 as I rarely use the very lowest gears anyway.

The trigger was crashing a chainring on a rock so I took the opportunity to get a Wolf tooth Drop Stop N/W 36t. Free postage from the States was a sweetener but I didn’t have much choice as this was the only ring I could find that was compatible with my cranks.

Not ridden any big hills yet though, I’ll let you know how I get on.

Use Strava to compete with myself and see what my mates are up to, why would I care how fast you are? No offence.

I’m waiting for one of the bike mags to do a group test on those Chinese Crees instead or better still up against the £200+ set. Waiting in vain I suspect, no advertising revenue from the ebay lot.

I’d be very surprised if they don’t have evidence, there’s an awful lot of tech in police cars these days. Good luck.

I carry my drivers licence in my wallet and my wallet with me on most rides so in fact I do carry id should the need ever arise. I expect this is the same for most cyclists, particularly in towns.

Impressed with WTC shipping, let’s hope performance matches up. This goes on the Superlight tonight.

    I use OutDoors GB

Which has OS maps. National parks are free and other areas are a tenner.
Batt life on an iPhone can be a pain but I turn bluetooth, mobile data and wifi off and then it gives me a good few hours.

I ride FOOTPATHS, I also ride a Santa Cruz but I try always to be courteous and take care when passing pedestrians – I also run and hate the nettles 🙂

A fair rant. Props to Matt

    Riding along the Calder and Hebble canal I encountered an angling competition;
    Ting Ting went my bell
Don’t do that, said the angler, it scares the fish
    Fair do’s says I,
    Further along……….
    An angler pipes up..
Is that one of those silent bells you have?
Me, first bloke back there says it scares the fish….
Yeah, but he’s shit at fishing, says the angler.
    1-0 to the anglers I feel………

ha ha, tomorrow I’m buying a bell.

What scandal said. Depends where you ride.
For local XC, bridleways and the like I ride my hard tail.
At trail centres and in the mountains I’m more likely to take my FS.
In general I’d steer clear of cheaper full sussers because they will be heavy and have poor components.

Get any of the cheap Crees on ebay in the 20-30 quid range and throw them away when they break, which will be quite a while, I’ve had mine over a year and they are still great.
Why spend £200+ in the hope it will last longer when battery and led technology is progressing so fast that pretty soon the new cheap ones are better than the old expensive ones?

Stem flipped on my Look carbon road bike.
    Eggbeaters and MTB shoes.
About to buy a Trek (didn’t know this was wrong til I read above), can’t decide between Madone and Emonda and only just realised they are anagrams!

Still looking and decided probably to ditch the C2W scheme as too limiting, plus my most local LBS and the one I like the best doesn’t do Halfords scheme.

Currently looking at a Trek Madone 3.1 with Shimano 105 kit like this one and a Trek Emonda S which has Tiagra one here

There aren’t many reviews of the Emonda yet and those there are are for the featherweight and bank breaking SLR.

    Any thoughts or other suggestions?

    Thanks

£1000 is the limit, no flex. 🙁

But, just discovered I can get a Planet X Pro Carbon. Either Sram Rival or Shim 105.

This is looking like my favoured option but unsure which version to choose”

They do an X Large but not clear whether that will fit.

My one concern is I’ve read a comment somewhere that they are a bit flexi at the front, does anyone have any experience of this?

NFU Mutual aren’t always the cheapest but remember, when you buy insurance you are really buying the claims service and NFU’s is second to none.

Thanks all, some good comments here. Looks like I just got unlucky, either in the actual impact or the pre-ownership. If I do buy carbon again I will avoid used but more likely I will seek a decent alloy bar like Thomson or Easton. Off to post in Wanted again.

bruceonabike » The Muppet in the video should be banned.
Made to drive instead, or do you think he’d be safe walking?

Banned from the road altogether as he/she clearly has no road sense and when the inevitable happens some poor sod will have to live with the knowledge that they killed someone. Anyway I only said should and I know it would be quite impractical. Mores the pity.

I understand your point NW but the bike wasn’t mistreated before I owned it and not crashed, believe me it was “as new” though of course I can’t prove that and hence am not seeking to blame.

    stuff breaks in crashes

That’s all I wanted to hear, yes I guess it was a light weight bar as the other components are all XX, so if you are saying light weight means won’t last then that’s fine and I’ve learnt my lesson. I will replace it with a decent alloy bar.

Presumably if you tot up enough points you also get banned from cycling.

The Muppet in the video should be banned.

Not sure that being second hand has any bearing on whether I complain, though perhaps “complain” is the wrong word. I’m not looking to blame anyone nor am I worried about the cost, I just want to establish whether carbon bars generally or Syncros carbon bars specifically tend to snap in this way from a relatively light impact when only 2 years old. Hence I asked the question to the experienced hive mind that is the STW community to see if anyone has had a similar experience.

Syncros may not be interested but I think I’ll just email them the photos to give them the chance to comment.

Thanks all for the replies, I particularly liked Rorschach’s intel on nettles, thanks bud I’ll bear that in mind. @scotroutes I think bearnecessities answered you better than I could have.

Regarding over tightening, no I don’t own a torque wrench but I didn’t fit the brakes either, that was a bike shop in Nottingham I think. The bike is 2yo, I’ve had it 18 months having bought it through ebay.

    Here are some pics…

The Sektors are dual position right? So just run them at 120 if you like.
I have the Sektor DPC on my Ti 456 ( a hardtail) and they are perfect, if a little flexi at times.

I’m 49, so you’d probably call me middle aged, I also work in IT. I ride an SC Superlight but earlier this year I built up a Ti 456 from a frame I got on Ebay just because I’d always wanted to do a build and always fancied a go on a Ti. I now ride both in equal measure though the SC is faster and lighter it’s hard to say which is the most fun.
My SC wasn’t new when I got it but it still wasn’t cheap and I had to do some soul searching to part with the cash. I don’t look back though I just absolutely love the bike.

I use my iPhone 5 and it never misses. I have a Garmin Forerunner too but prefer the phone because it auto syncs to Endomondo or Strava whereas I have to plug the Garmin in. Only trouble is the gps sucks the battery life so I revert to the Garmin on long rides.
