Stainless steel bolts ?
if you cant extract them you’ll need cobalt bits to drill them out , way harder than hss , your nearest toolstation sells them , use 1mm smaller than the bolt thread diameter
brownsauceFree Memberinteresting point but I don’t think you’d be able to sell a switch unless the gearbox shift was as quick and crisp as a well set up derailleur can be.
Maybe a gearbox will never be as efficient or slick as a derailleur , but it would be sold on its benefits , such as never getting damaged or knocked out of tune from trail impacts , or having a built in oil bath for the chain , unaffected by mud , etc
and because theres always buyers who want the latest & greatest shiney stuff
====================
it seems many are just considering the short comings , and there are many , of the bike gearboxs available today , where as i’m looking ahead 5-10 years from now when someone has really got stuck into the concept with enough cash to develop real improvements
brownsauceFree MemberIt won’t be cheap
neither was srams axs range , still got made & released
and it might never take off because the derailleur is so well developed
like the 26″ wheel , defacto size for 30+ years , now ignored by the popular brands
Even selling me a gearbox, no matter how good/reliable (an unknown) is going to be hard work if it’s even a tiny bit more draggy.
when coming to buy the latest mtb’s in 10 years time you may not have a choice , refer to the point above as an example….
brownsauceFree MemberTaking the thread in a new direction………
Although i personally think that a derailleur is currently still the most suitable device for changing gears for the majority of bikes , i also think that they have peaked from a design / development point of view
ie ; srams electronic wifi mech is probably the last tech break through / improvement we will see for a derailleur , theres no more real product advancements to be made for it that i can identify or envisage……
and we all know how the mtb world likes to obsolete current tech & standards in the infinite drive for profit.
When all the major obstacles of internal gearboxs’ have been ironed out then we’ll see a big roll out followed by a gradual reduction in the use of derailleurs.
it only takes just one of the component big players to take a leap of faith and sink a shit load of cash into development and I can see them taking off in a few years.
Bike marketing got everyone from 26″> 29″ in little over 2 years , then successfully introduced e-bikes in roughly the same period , so getting folk from rear mechs to gearboxes is every bit as achievable
brownsauceFree Membersomehow i dont think swopping brand will be the cure all solution for those impacts
its like wrapping a ford fiesta round a tree at 40mph then saying if only it was a vauxhall corsa it would just polish out
brownsauceFree MemberYou did.<span style=”font-size: 0.8rem;”>‘I certainly wouldnt interfere with the voting intentions of any persons in my life out of simple respect for the individuals own beliefs’ to me smacks of being too frightened of confrontation to discuss or debate any subject that could be construed as having a political angle because it might offend. Which is a bit crap.</span>
Purposefully twisting my words way beyond original intent , well done you
and how you’ve extrapolated “being too frightened” from a clear position of taking a respectful and non-interfering stance sounds like straw clutching.
but knock yourself out if you believe that ,.makes no difference to me
brownsauceFree MemberSo you are not prepared to talk about (or debate if you will) economics, defence, education, the health service or event the frequency of bin emptying with anyone ever? Because that is what you are saying. If that is the case however do you come to a meaningful point of view of your own?
I didnt come close to even infering any of that so stop making crap up to embellish your own non argument.
brownsauceFree MemberDiscussion & debating is one thing , but thats not the case here as its clear from the O.P. that he is setting out with the sole intention of changing how someone may vote because he/she thinks they know whats better for the individual concerned.
Thats a million miles away from idle chit chat in a works canteen or internet forum.
brownsauceFree MemberI dont understand why the Op & daughter think its their job to change the political leanings of someone they know because it differs from their own view ?
I certainly wouldnt interfere with the voting intentions of any persons in my life out of simple respect for the individuals own beliefs
brownsauceFree MemberI live 3 miles from the frack site in Lancs , never felt any of the tremors , most are undetectable even if you were stood directly above at the time.
The eco zealots are a pain in the arse though ,often stood in the middle of a busy primary route into the Fylde Coast waving their placards around , oblivious to the hazard they pose to themselves & traffic , has cost the county police millions over the last 2 years of demos shepherding the protestors.
I wish they would all just piss off to be honest as they have had bugger all effect in halting the operation.
brownsauceFree MemberHouns knows…..
Super excited now !
As an aside , has anyone got an idea as to which team the Japs will cheer on ?
At least 50% of the stadium crowd will be home fans , and having that support will defo lift the side being cheered….
brownsauceFree MemberIs this a known/common issue
maybe not common , but i have heard this issue raised a few times ( on other forums )
As to why , my guess would be the regular and constant ( twice per crank revolution ) pulsing effect of an oval chainring through the chain to the mech cage which may put additional wear on the clutch.
I doubt that rear suspension travel would replicate the same effect , even though this does produce mech cage movement in itself – but clearly not as detrimental.
regular service of the mech does noticably help from what i’ve read / heard.
only my 2p tho.
brownsauceFree MemberListening to the big don trashing Corbynov was hilarious.
You just cant buy that kinda public endorsement / entertainment
brownsauceFree MemberIm sure i’ve read that statistically , the week after clocks going back has the biggest increase of traffic incidents over the entire year – as daylight drives home become , in an instant , darkness journeys with no adjustment period for the reduced light levels.
Certainly glad i dont commute thats 4 sho….
brownsauceFree MemberIt’s their opportunity to make history that worries me…first black captain to lift the trophy, first team to win the Rugby Championship and WC in the same year and the first team to lose a pool game and win.
thats just a load of media friendly aspirational stuff and will have no relevence once the whistle blows
play the game , not the occasion – mental preparation 101
The pressure will be on but they almost have more at stake.
There’ll be pressure alright , but nothing is at stake other than the chance to win and team pride – nothing else , and that will be equally the same for both teams
brownsauceFree MemberThis Eng team + manager have just as good a chance of winning the cup as any that went before them – think positive – we’re doing very well getting here
And although the boks are a solid team their performance against a stuttering wales wasnt that amazing or creative.to be fair
And in their defeat to NZ in the first week , although close for most of the game , in the last 20mins the AB’s moved up a gear and completely rolled them over.
so they are there for the taking by this Eng team imo
brownsauceFree MemberIts highly unlikely the landlords building insurance allows for heating via flammable liquids or bottled gas kept inside the building so forget any ideas about kerosne / oil patio burners and the suchlike……..
brownsauceFree Member30kw is a fairly large amount done electrically – you may not have the spare capacity in your power supply for that level of heating – and your landlord will have kittens when he see’s the bill for what is heating for just 3 people – expect resistance on that.
1 problem is the 5 mtr high dead roof space just sucking the heat away – suspened thermal ceiling at 2.5 mtrs will make it easier to keep warm
2nd problem is 10x20m is vast as a 3person workshop so trying to heat all of it to the same temp is going to be very inefficient – can it not be split into smaller work zones and just heat areas occupied ?
On the industrial type units i’ve worked on , that level of space heating would be done by a hot air ducting system with outlet grills and blower fans positioned around the workshop , but hardly cheap to install
brownsauceFree MemberThe whole mobile phone sparking vapours thing is bollox – its a circuit board encased in a dust tight box , not a zipper lighter with a flint
the hazard comes from the zombie like state folk exhibit whilst using them that increases several fold the chance of forecourt fuel spills that makes garages prohibit their use when using pumps.
same with ban on using phones during take off & landing on a plane flights – its not cos the digital altimeter works on the same frequency as your galaxy edge , its because the airlines want passengers paying attention at key moments.
As for the anger issues , well I hope you gave the missus a good back-hander for this unfounded allegation………
*joke*
brownsauceFree MemberI had exactly the same thought doing my shopping in Asda today – several isles of novelty halloween tat that will become landfill fodder within 2 weeks.
I didnt give any consideration to the Ex.R aspect but did conclude this event is grossly over commercialised and wasteful
brownsauceFree MemberStrewth that was hard work
and deducting 60mins @ 2am is not really in the realms of impossible maths to be fair…..
;-)
brownsauceFree MemberAlthough a certified engineer , his is still only 1 persons opinion , not gospel.
and yes his BB’s are considerably better than most brands , but thats because his are custom made costing 2-300 quids a piece in comparison to a £40 mass produced item.
his vids are informative but get a bit boring fairly quick
brownsauceFree MemberSpent a month in Bali few years back , great place to visit , eye opening culture & fantastic people.
As for mountain biking well most of the islands interior is jungle and the humidity is like a brick wall , i was pouring with sweat just walking down the street – wouldnt like to do any serious exertion unless well conditioned for the heat..
I wouldnt go all that way with expections of it being a great riding vacation to be honest although i dont doubt someone somewhere caters for it
brownsauceFree MemberAnd if England win, ditto. They haven’t beaten their nemesis….Scotland. 😁
what are you babbling on about ?
they never played each other in the tournament.
brownsauceFree Membertotally doiminated NZ in the last 5 min
brilliant performance by Eng
brownsauceFree MemberMega excited this morn !
got up early to get all my shit done in readiness
too early for me to be boozing so i’m wired on caffine lol
Will be a great match , , good luck England !
:-)
brownsauceFree MemberTo be fair , there was quite a lengthy period where S.A went fairly shit , mainly due to a unsuccessful management period and a large team rebuild following big name retirements.
All culminating when they got their own asses handed to them by Japan a few years back.
They’re looking good this year though.
Lots of power upfront and will try and dominate with the forwards.
But certainly not unbeatable regardless of what odds the bookies give.
brownsauceFree MemberI’ve alot of respect & admiration for the Wales team , but they needs to muster a performance twice as good as their game against France or the Springboks will give them a right good kicking.
brownsauceFree MemberMeh , we’ve got the A.B’s so rattled they have resorted to spying on Eng training camp this week with a telephoto lens from a balcony lol.
And being underdogs and written off suits Eng just fine from a pyschological point of view – it takes the pressure off if everyones expecting Eng to lose….
Trophy no. 2 is virtually in the bag , i can almost taste the gold ;-)
brownsauceFree MemberIts saddening to read all the anti dog / dog owner sentiment.
Its as if some riders think they have a god given priority over everyone else to hoon around the countryside.
they sound like entitled ****ts to me
brownsauceFree MemberFantastic performance from Japan over the whole tournament , they have been a joy to watch and I salute them for their contribution.
A final between a northern hemisphere team vs southern hemisphere team would be a fitting & mouth watering spectacle to end the world cup.
i’d expect NZ and SA to get the nudge at the bookmakers but both semi’s are too close to call by this rugby fan…..
brownsauceFree MemberAgreed.
But of the 4 other remaining teams only Wales are capable of beating Eng or NZ on current forms.
all blacks already beaten S.A.in first round , and Eng would beat them too looking at how they dispatched Aus today.
brownsauceFree MemberEngland no-where near their best today but got job done thanks to more tactically astute field kicking , selecting where & when to play their running game , and not to be underestimated , the sheer power of our front pack. – case in point at around 70th minute , england scrum into rolling maul , we pushed the aussies off the ball like they were schoolkids.
Whoever wins the NZ vs Eng will be odds on to lift the trophy in my op.
brownsauceFree MemberXT gives you 90% of the features & performance of XTR at 60% of the cost
SLX gives you 90% of the features & performance of XT at 60% of the cost
laws of diminishing returns innit
SLX is where the bang 4 buck is just right
brownsauceFree Memberedit ; last time i used an avo was whilst building a transistor radio in electronics class at college
about 30 yrs ago……
edit edit : re needle gauge backlights – many models had this feature as standard , if not lit up when switched on , tiny lamps inside may have blown.
