People who refer to “tit monday” when its barely stopped snowing let alone anywhere near Spring should be forced to wear a big sign that says “I’m an attention seeking whore”…

    …. I’ll get my own sign…

experience and advice from climbing friends has led me to only carry what i am comfortable using on myself/friends. you see some people on the hills with those huge first aid kits designed for mountain guides, stitching thread, dentistry kits etc but if an accident occurred, I would wonder first of all just how many are capable of using the kit and would default to mountain rescue and secondly, how many would try to help, panic and make a complete hash of it all resulting in more pain and a delayed call to mountain rescue….

anyway, i have Antiseptic wipes, dressings, surgical tape. clean it, stop it bleeding, get home. anything else and you need more than a first aid kit, add a space blanket and a sling and you’re done.

Not really a clubber but spent a night in Trafo in Bratislava last year and it was ace, really packed, everyone smoking (which was quite odd for the first 15 minutes!) then loads of bad central european dancing with the locals! I imagine it was just like the places mentioned here in the 90s….

Mrs BristolPablo has a Pinnacle Neon Two like this which is really nicely finished, light (22lbs) and well spec’d. She is happy with it and we’re looking at doing some century rides with it in 2013. In terms of the bike, welding etc, is a lot better than any other bike I’ve seen at the same price range and having a specific womens fit seems to really make a difference too. I may stick my old Fulcrum 7s on it and bring that weight down a bit and fit some better tyres on it for the summer too.

This is the best I can find, I’m not wholly sure its accurate or legit, my family are a bit of everything, historically Portugeuse the family history also includes lots of Indian ancestry as a result of the Portugeuse colonisation in the 1500s, then Bombay and eventually Lancashire….

I use Bad Ass bikes for scary stuff like bike builds and brake servicing because they know their stuff and the credit card statement just says “BAD ASS” which confuses Mrs BristolPablo. I try to use BW Cycling and Strada for the other stuff.

Most of the Bristol shops are ok, though it seems to go through stages and three or four years ago, they were pretty much all utterly useless because people had loads of money to throw at toys and the shop staff couldnt give a rats ass about customer service. Possibly now they are all trying a bit harder?….

I havent tried Psyclewerx but only heard good things so if Bad Ass are busy or getting there is a pain one day i’ll give them a try, I love the randomness of Bristol bike workshop, “Bike” opposite habitat goes through phases of being useful and then aloof in equal measures but is ok at the moment, even Evans is pretty good and so long as i avoid the egos at Mud Dock then I’m happy…

wasn’t this guy being chased down by the police, thought I read somewhere else

The car was speeding, Police saw him and indicated for him to stop (usually a flash of the blue lights i think) he ignored them and charged off, out of the Police cars sight, he crashed into the other car and then into the tandem.

Mr Lovell, 38, of West Street, Oldland Common, has also been charged with driving while disqualified, driving with no insurance and failing to stop at the scene of a collision”

I had ssumed there were other factors dtermining his decision not to stop bar speeding alone….

We normally recommend the “STAR” approach, situation, task, action and result so what was the issue/problem, what options were available to you, what did YOU do and what was the benefit/positive result. I appreciate this lends itself to clerical jobs better than all jobs but it need only be a sentance on each element but something like….

“In my current role as a XXX qualified mechanic I am responsible for ensuring all hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic faults are quickly diagnosed and repaired to the satisfaction of my supervisor and within the required timescales.”

    rather than

“I am confident with diagnosing and repairing electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic faults”

    and

“In my current position, I manage a complex and varied workload prioritising tasks and consistently meet output targets. I am flexible and I am often required to work an irregular shift pattern to meet the workload.”

    rather than

“I am used to working late and early shifts and am flexible in meeting workload requirements”

Radon might have something similar (check bike-discount.de) but to be honest, a Canyon for the same price or a CAAD10 will be just as nice.

That Ribble build will be closer to 18.5 – 19lbs. Build it with Sram Apex however and you save nearly 1lb over a 105 build.

i’d go with the female empowerment thing too, so something on the Pankhurst, Jean of Arc or a really nice old copy of Pride and Prejudice, though given the anniversary, prices of the latter will be sky high at the moment…

This has got me thinking, I live near Weston Super Mare which has a big stretch of beach, there is about a mile or so of rideable beach from the pier south to the headland and would be ideal but then there is Brean down to Burnham on Sea which could be rideable too and is something like twice the distance …. any idea who would need to be involved in organising something like this?

Leki alu ones will be fine, I’ve sold hundreds in a past life.
Twist lock will be fine too, you wont be adjusting the height that often to be honest and they will most likely be used for stability if you are running with them. Correct length is personal preference (ahem….) but you’ll soon find what works for your stride aptter on ascents/descents. you will get some sneers and sarcastic comments but I found they really are handy over long distances and there is the reduced slip potential too.

This book is a few years old but gives an interesting overview of UK defense spending. Not sure that I agree with all the authors conclusions but it is thought provoking stuff.

I dont know Lewis Page (ex RN) but having spoken to people who did know him whlist he was serving, he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder so “Lions, Donkeys and Dinosaurs” should be treated accordingly… at best its a closing time “and anohter thing….” style rant at worst, its pure Daily Mail hyperbole….

Quite a few other clubs use ticketmaster as an outlet but it really depends on the game.

I’d look at Aston Villa, you will be able to get tickets straight from the box office at the moment given their dire state of form. Its a big stadium and wont be selling out for any games in the near future. Its also pretty easy to get to from Bristol as we make the trip every now and then, funnily enough, when watching Bristol City becomes too hard to bear…. we normally get tickets in the Holte End quite easily and they are around £35. Its the home end so obvious rules apply etc etc

Sadly the London clubs are harder to get tickets for, certainly for Arsenal, I know despite the empty seats, the tickets go through various levels of members priority before they go on sale to the general public and invariably, they never get that far. I cant see you ugetting Chelsea or Spurs tickets that easily for the same reasons.

Fulham might be worth a bet but its a smaller ground so they are also quite hard to come by. Ticketmaster is worth a look sometimes as is viagogo or seetickets.

Occasionally, some games are a pay on the day for away fans but this is quite rare in the Premiership, again its worth a look.

ah, yeah, sorry about that… I missed POW and LPDs…..

Brazil and India dont have much of an new equipment procurement programme to be honest, they buy old capability from various countries. I think up till recently they both had old RN carriers for example. I think Brazil recently bought some of our old Type 22 Frigates too.

Dont get me wrong, Companies like BAE are developing and delivering cutting edge technology to cope with our modern warfare requirements but the big stuff like Ships, Planes and tanks, I’ll confess we are all pretty poor at but the “blame” can be attributed to many sources.

I work with the MOD – we are one of their major suppliers – they are bad at procurement.

The MoD would fare better if it didnt have to sustain half of the UK Engineering industry…. ;)

BAE have a major issue regarding a 2-3 year gap between the QEC build completion and the start of the T26 builds, they have already been touting a few new OPVs for the RN which the RN neither want nor need but political whim and the power of the company could well see them built regardless…. so dont assume that the procurement failings are the fault of the MoD and not also as a result of UK Industry trying to sustain its workforce and weak politicians unable to stand up to them for fear of losing voters….

I went to the “Down under live” expo in London last year which was ok but mostly full of agents and shipping firms touting for business. The same company publish a magazine which is quite useful. You really dont need an agent to fill in the forms, there are loads of forums out there to help.

Anyway, the immigration rules have changed as I am sure you are aware and its no longer a “pass the points test and youre in” exercise.

Now you take the points test, and if you pass, go on a waiting list based on your skills and experience for potential jobs, obtaining the visa isnt automatic. You stay on the waiting list for a period of time, if nothing comes up, you have to reapply.

as others have also said, getting an australian employer to sponsor you is the best bet but they have tightened up those areas too and the employer has to go through several hoops to justify why the vacancy can not be filled by an Australian National.

forgot to say, the book “Pitch Yourself” is very good and well worth reading, it describes the elevator pitch method to cv writing and job hunting using a competence approach rather than the standard “education/employment/interests” approach and shows that you have tailored your cv to the job by picking out the key words from the advert/terms of reference.

    BristolPablo
    Free Member

Your cv should be tailored to the job that you are applying for, a generic cv rarely gets much more than a cursory glance and its quite obviously vague and ambiguous. You really need to research the company, find their competences/values and that sort of thing, tailor the cv to their business and provide evidence of experience in the function/role that you are applying for.

The difference between a generic cv and one that is tailored to the role is easy to spot and as a recruiting manger, I will assume that if you cant be bothered to tailor your cv to the role then you are using a scatter gun approach and trying to find any job rather having an particular interest in my vacant position.

as I said on another thread, its my understanding that the Cooke vs Armitstead thing goes back to 2010 Nationals when Armitstead, Pooley et al all rode for Garmin Cervelo and Cooke was on her own. They kept breaking and Cooke was forced to chase it down, eventually Pooley broke free and Cooke rode to 3rd. She complained and said it was too tactical but I gather Cooke was fairly gracious in defeat but the Garmin riders were far from magmanimous in victory… could all be wrong, i wasnt there and its all hearsay.

its an interesting statement for sure, Hamilton may well have a big bank balance but Cooke has an Olympic gold (Hamilton doesnt) and Cooke also has a ten year unbeaten national road race championship record from 99-09(?) to look back on (it was something like that, wiki it if you are that keen!).

she probably was a bit tough to work with, she must have been hell to ride with, the Garmin team ganged up a bit on here in 2010 and although it was all fair enough, it was a bit savage to watch but in that race where Pooley won, Cooke rode her heart out.

I wish her all the best and hope she stays in the sport becuase it needs her, this is her incredible, multi-discipline 2001 Palmares:

1st UCI Road World Championships, Junior, Lisbon
1st UCI Time Trial World Championships, Junior, Lisbon
1st UCI Cross Country MTB World Championships, Junior, Colorado
1st GBR British National Road Race Championships
1st GBR British National Mountain Bike Championships
1st GBR British National Cyclo-cross Championships
