I think the supernova rear takes a DC voltage feed from the supernova front light, which is why it isn’t compatable with other systems ( unless you supply your own DC voltage ) and it also means it uses the front’s standlight function.

Yeah, that is correct – surely it’s not beyond someone to take the AC supply from the front light and do the conversion in an LED rear light? Having just invested in the B+M front light, I don’t really fancy shelling out again (though I do lust after the E3 triple front/E3 rear combination…… ;-))

    Trout to the forum, perhaps……

Indeed – I’ve got a B+M front light, and don’t really like any of their rear lights (too big – either intended for rack or gurard fitting). The SuperNova E3 rear light looks ideal, but it does say it is specific to Supernova front lights……gggrrrrrr 👿

Can’t add anything to the above really – was only there for a day, except….

Beautiful part of the world and cant wait to go back again !!

It really does sound like you need a proper dynamo setup then, given the conditions you ride in. Why put up with battery lights in cold conditions that are detrimental to li-ion battery life?

Timely (…if a slight hijack) – I’ve run my front dynamo light in anger for a week now, and it’s been great. Although the cabling will be a bit of a faff (the reason I’m still using battery LEDs for the moment), what’s big in the world of dynamo rear lights? What’s going to give me the biggest bucket of (red) sunshine for my 0.6W?

the problem for the lights seems to relate to the fact my commute is often in freezing fog conditions when going up over the tops of the Peaks here… so the 1hr each way in such conditions seems to be a real test for these items.

I’m out then – the few times a year I have to commute through freezing fog (I’m about 1hr each way as well), the lights have been fine, it’s been the various mechanical components (particularly the brakes!) starting to ice up/stick!

@mattjng – well, fair enough. I’ll have to give it another go – though the website looks nice, if a little unfinished. Would be nice if there was something properly ‘special’ within spitting distance, rather than having to go into town.

Smart and Cateye are not reliable enough in the depths of winter imo… water ingress and sub zero temperatures kill them…. thus pretty useless as a commuter light in proper winter conditions.

I’ve got two Cateye Holy Handgrenades and a Smart 1/2W on mine at the moment – waterproofing and longevity are entirely fine (they’ve been there at least a couple of years each) PROVIDED they are out of the direct spray line from the rear wheel – i.e. fit some mudguards! 😉

As an aside, if you’ve not thought about it already, do put a turbo-specific tyre on your turbo wheel to the stop it wearing out anywhere near as fast…..

Casamia in Westbury is some of the best, and swankiest food you will get in Bristol

Really?? Has it had a make over – last time I was there (several years ago, I admit) it was nowt special. Villagers, round the corner, is small, personal and rustic, but a bit variable.

Riverstation, Glassboat and Bells Diner have been very good for me in the past.

@kevj – it has helped that I have a friend who works at the patent office who I could lean on for inital advice before taking things forward. If you do go down the patent route, be prepared for the long haul and the costs – whatever it is you have come up with will have been done before (though not necessarily exactly as you imagine it, or in the same field, but you will tread on someones toes), so having a decent patent writer, legal advice and relationship with the patent office helps.

I would say your numbers (as you suggest) are just guesses at this stage – if it’s a good enough idea, people will pay. Our licensing agreement will yield 20x what we thought it was worth on a similar thumb-in-the-air study and will be good for 15+years, at least.

    Good luck 🙂

My commute is 15miles each way

… over such a short distance?

15 miles each way is pretty serious if you’re intending to do it every day – must be the best part of an hour each way?

How about an Alfine’d Pompetamine – have the choice of flats or drops, with the potential to change from one to the other. TBH, I’d go with drop bars, but raised up a little compared to a fully ‘slammed’ road race setup to allow more comfort and ease of looking around.

Yep,I have a spare mech hanger, but my mech is still stuck to the old one

If you have a spare hanger, it might be easier to cut the hanger off the thread of the bolt. The hanger should be an aluminium alloy, compared to the steel bolt, so saw as much of the hanger off from around the bolt as you can, cut a slit in the remainder of the hanger up to the thread, then wedge the slit apart with a chisel (/screwdriver 😉 ). Maybe…..

    Ignore me….. 🙂

Me and some colleagues at work have come up with an idea that is nearing the end of the patent process at the moment – critically, we also have a licensing agreement with a large multi-national in place to exploit it, so there will be cash at the end of it. Not large pots of money, but it means the companyy won’t have to worry too much about income levels for many years to come…… so I can carry on surfing here and call it ‘work’ 😉

Can’t say any more than that (and it is mind-numbingly dull/specific as well!) at the moment, but actually quite satisfying/exciting 🙂

Alfine 11 here, only on the road. Really like it for its ‘work horse’ intended purpose. Seems bomb-proof for its first ~1000 miles.

Service intervals are first 1000km and then every 5000km thereafter. See my service saga here http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/dealing-with-an-lbs, but it looks like a shop service will cost £20/£30 a time, or sell your kids and buy the service kit and oil.

There have been a spate of similar threads over the last few days, so have a search in those……

I may have misunderstood the ruling, but is it not he case that a lifetime ban could be introduced by WADA as part of its sanctions and then this would have to be recognised by the IOC. In other words, it’s not really the lifetime ban that is at issue, but the fact that it is WADA who issues drugs sanctions, not the IOC.

NB: This may be an over-simplification of a subject that is, at any level, a complete minefield

Get yourself to a garden centre with a shed display – they’ll be selling off this years display stock right about now. Got a new shed half price/free delivery/free assembly coming at the end of the month like this.

Its funny as I am not really a fan of many of the bike shops in Bristol, but Terrys is the one I always find a pleasure to deal with.

In all fairness, they are gernally a very nice bunch to deal with – they are local to my office so I use them quite a bit for small bits and pieces (and the occasional big spend). My only real quibble is that their prices are quite high, perhaps because they are a well stocked small shop out in the sticks (relatively)?

*whines* but what am I to pitchfork?

Simmer down at the back – I’m sure a suitably incendiary thread will be along at the moment, complete with Daily Mail levels of righteous indignation, knashing of teeth and mouth foaming.

I’d never go to a tyre place (kwikfit or similar) out of choice now they’re proper cowboys. much cheaper and more convienient to book/pay online and have someone come to your house/work and fit them…

Quite – only use Etyres now.

If you’re with the same insurance company for a few years on the same policy, they might want to look back at these to see how many miles you’ve done between MOTs

What if you change cars during the policy?

    bristolbiker
    Free Member

My assumption would be that it will affect your cost of insurance

Clearly, but they don’t ask what your exact mileage was for the last 3 years, just an estimate of what next years will be. Might consult the T+C’s on my policy to see what it says…..

I’ve often wondered this as well…. nearly tripled my ‘estimate’ one year.

maybe i an a cynic, but I do wonder if you would have had such a result without this thread………

Ha! I knew it was BikeUK! Think at least one of the guys is on here a fair amount….

you may well be right (in which case this thread simply served as a ‘virtual’ letter to the manager) but, TBH, I don’t really care – from my point of view a problem occured, it has ultimately been dealt with to my satisfaction, no-one needed to get shouty and I’ll be back in the shop buying stuff again. Result all round me’thinks.

I thought to start with it sounded just like that bloke from the shop nearest to your work he is a right misery

Hi Jase 😉 Never had a problem with Terry’s…. but you are correct about occassional grumpiness! How are those forks going BTW?

    Anyway……

UPDATE TIME: Quite clearly, words had been exchanged internally and someone senior had decided things had been handled badly at their end.

Whilst riding home last night I missed three calls from the shop – by the time I got home it was too late to call back. So, I popped in there this morning to pick the wheel up, and when the assistant on the desk saw the service card I was immediately directed to the senior workshop spanner-er who first handed me my wheel, talking through the service and the findings, and then apologising profusely for a communication failure, both internally and with me (it would appear that any non-collected service BIKES are picked up in the system after three days of the work being finished via their work book – there is – currently – no system for WHEELS….. so mine just sat there…. and sat there….). Without any prompting all parts and labour costs were waved for the service and I recieved a £25 voucher by way of compensation. Have to say, I’m pretty happy with that and how it was (finally) handled (…even if I didn’t get to vent my spleen at the rude spanner-er from yesterday!! 😉 ) – an apology, an update to their inventory procedures and a free service.

So, to the good folks of Bike UK in Bristol – I will be back. For those interested, I did ask how much the service would actually cost for future reference and the feeling was it would be £20/£30 – consisting of about 1/2 hour of spannering, plus a contribution to the cost of the (snake)oil for these hubs.

For riding up, down and across the “shires” you don’t need anything else. Are the RS Judy SL’s yellow as well to add to the colour overload?

They are indeed yellow which, combined with all the other colours, is indeed a a bit of an assault on the senses. My red one, on ther other hand, was tasteful red/black/silver….. complete with red Chicken Stix levers, straight-as-a-straight-thing red bars and X-lite bar ends and red brake boosters….. Oh, the shame! 😉

Sheriff – Mister P of this parish was under the impression that Noah’s Ark might have a service kit as well, which may be a little more local to you. I cannot confirm if this is the case, but could be worth a call if it saves you a few miles……

I have a mate who still rides his ’97 anodised blue Zaskar complete with 8spd XT and thumbies. He has some fully functioning RS Judy SL’s of a similar vintage as well.

Everytime I have a go on it, I wonder why I sold my ano Red ’96 version with Judy XC’s and period XTR. Miss that bike 🙁

I appreciate that this is a bit of a how long is a piece of string question, but realistically how much do we need to save to pay someone to come in and do the work (inc. buying the suite / materials)?

Depends on so many things. Get some quotes and find out – that’ll cost you nothing?

Report back when it’s done – I have a project that has had to go on the back burner, but I’m looking at getting ICS to do a frame soon so am interested in what you find in the area…..

    bristolbiker
    Free Member

    That is so very similar…

… but not the same – the other frame clearly cracked all the way along the weld toe – exactly where you would expect.

However, in the new pics, it does look like there are two weld passes, with the ‘crack’ between along the fusion plane between two of them. My money is still on a paint crack but, as has been said, without a bit of digging you’ll never know for sure.
