I’ve got a pair of those single sided ones in alloy. Pretty much the same weight as my ATAC Roc double sided ones on the CX bike which kinda defeats the object!

Seller on ebay flogging them for £26 posted – search for “time atac clip in alloy pedals”.

Come on STW’ers, there hardly a mention of “I climb everywhere on a 53t front chainring and 21t rear. FACT”. Poor showing in my opinion.

Try climbing something like the Ryals on the NR Cyclone after 100 miles then sometimes just a bailout gear is a nice to have.

Chucky – what shifters are you running on the roadrat?

If it’s road STI shifters then bear in mind most are double only these days so a triple might not be worth it if you have to buy triple compatible shifters too. If it’s flat bar shifters then you should be okay.

Plus not sure if mtb front mech it going to handle a 50t front road chainring, probably will but again something to consider especially as road front mechs have different pull than mtb ones (though I’m sure people do use them successfully).

If you thinking of touring then got for a triple I’d say.

Has he got an electric trolley? We all chipped in to get my old man a decent one of those.

You can get the pro to follow him during a round rather than just a half hour on the driving range.

In my experience all you need as a designer is an understanding that the developer could probably do it, but it won’t be pixel perfect.

And design for the worst case (i.e. words wrapping over two lines thus creating more space) rather than hacking word spacing etc. in Photoshop to make it look perfect.

The developers could then work some magic on that kind of design…

It’s not really the blingness, it’s more a reflection of the quality of the unit (bigger the number the better quality. Whether it lasts longer is always open to debate.)

73 will be the width of the bb shell the bottom bracket came out off. 110 (or 113 or whatever) will signify the length of the bb axle – always try to replace like with like unless you’re fiddling with chainline.

Finally if you are diagnosed dont rush into any treatment because none of it is very pleasent and possibly life changing

Yes, I did look up one of the options, and even the missus cringed when she realised which hole they went in via to pull bits of the protate out of…..

Alloy cranks are Shimano compatible. The Carbon ones need the special mega exo version.

Main reasons – no threads to screw up (either in manufacture, or later when the seize/crossthread/wrong threading) and lighter weight. Are those benefits worth the hassle

Yes, because there’s no possible problem with me hammering a set of bearings in at a dodgy angle into my expensive carbon frame thus ruining it.

Basically it’s quicker for manufacturers to build bikes therefore they make them cheaper. Then they make up some hype that it’s better for the punter.

Check out repayment mortgages if they are cheaper to set up – like I say you could overpay (up to 10% a year IIRC) and I’ve still got access to it so it works almost like an offset.

Road BB cups are approx 1mm wider than the equivalent MTB ones

Presumably you are talking about external bearings here….

To OP – you won’t die if you use a roadie compact. I use one during the winter when the hardtail gets turned into a 1×9 commuter.

(the UK is the victim of being the leader in trains in Victorian times and we are now stuck with that infrastructure).

I thought it was because we blew up most of the European rail infrastructure during WW2 and then paid for it all to be rebuild properly to more modern (i.e. non Victorian) standards.

I will probably use all my savings initially as a deposit, but would be building these back up again over time), whilst retaining future access to those savings if required without having to remortgage (for example to do work on the house or if I lost my job).

Not following you logic really – you will have no savings after using the money as a deposit so you won’t suddenly be able to decide you need £5k and ‘take it out’ of your offset mortgage – it just won’t be there.

My repayment mortgage allows me to overpay, and I can still take it out if required or take a repayment holiday.

Mates going, strangely the following week he’s also off to see The Saturdays (with youngest daughter ‘of course’).

Better news, week before at the Newcastle Academy is Magazine with a fairly original lineup (apart from the late John McGeough obviously!)

how much are you paying for the op?

Not sure if that’s a dig in terms of “well, the op is free so MTFU if it all goes pear shaped”. If thats the case then the pedant in me might start totting up the taxes I’ve passed to aforementioned NHS to fund said surgeon.

I do think a letter of complaint might be in order.

They’ve either got a very confident lawyer/solicitor sitting there with bags (see what I did there?!) of evidence, or it’s going to be a complete “there’s loads of footballers but we can’t tell you anything”.

    Good luck with that search.

You might be able to take the freehub off Mavic hubs and swap with a Campy version but I’ve no idea if that’ll work.

My Ambrosio road wheels have a Campy freehub and you can get Shimano reaplcements – think the hubs are actually made by Novatech so possibly you could find a Novatech hub you can swap out the freehub, but again I’m not even usre that’s possible.

In reality it’s probably cheaper to buy a Campag spaced cassette with a boggo standard Shimano hub and have a spare chain with a powerlink if you’re worried about chain wear.

As for overheads – once again – find some facts.

Okay, I can walk into any supermarket and pick up a pack of ibuprofen for 20p. I know for a fact that my local hospital pays much more for them, and on top of that has to pay a fiver for ‘pharmacy’ costs. Even I can see an overhead there.

I don’t think the issue is NHX vs private. I think the issue is NHS managers and successive governments just being a) plain lazy and just signing any deal and b) just not having the knowledge to come up with requirements that could in anyway shape or form be watertight enough for companies.

happens time and time again (see most government IT projects). They get the soundbyte out. Some shoddy requirements, companies bid then the requirements change and it’s kerching, that’ll be £1 billion please to change it.

As you said, TJ earlier, you want better managers in the NHS – you’ll have to (in theory) pay good money for good managers so costs go up.

Just had bay window refelted, PVC soffits & facia boards and new guttering all round the semidetached and it’s cost us £1445. Knock off £300 for bay window roof. Roofer the black facia boards were 4x the price of white ones so maybe a saving if going for white.

From your original post about some ‘damp’ and other remedial work etc. being required don’t get too carried away with the bidding. You could end up paying over the odds for a house that then needed £20k on top of that spending on it.

If you do go to Prague and visit some of the special night clubs, for gods sake make sure all of you keep the little paper ticket they give you when you go in. You won’t get out alive without it.

Yes, definitely get the full survey.

Everyone on “help, my house is falling down” always starts with the word “It was the cheapest house on the street and we never bothered with a full survey and it just looked like cosmetic problems…”.

Always used Assos but just tried some Sportsbalm Chamois-balm. Opened it up and thought I’d just bought a 9 quid tub of mentolated petroluem jelly (I know, I know, technically it is…) but I’m quite impressed with it.

I feel a bit ashamed for even posting without finding out more. I shall find out more.

Gawd, don’t feel back about that.

I regularly get emails from the golf course where I play pleading to attend expensive charity events for the golf club owners niece – he’s one of the richest people in the North East so you’d kinda think he could dip in a bit himself.

Really not sure if it’s an ‘improvement’ having to hammer out bearings on potentially an expensive frame. The DIY guide in Cycling Plus just looked scary and I’m a reasonably competent bike fettler.

Sounds like one of those things that are possibly better for manufacturers when they are on the production line but don’t translate as well to real life (though the hype says otherwise…).

As mboy says, take a deep breath, chuck the SIDs and go for some longer travel forks.

Front mech and seatpost are the only two things you might get caught with in terms of sizing. And some new cables. Oh, and possibly headset. At a longshot bottom bracket too.

    Starts adding up!

Took a golf club through security once (present I was taking, all wrapped etc.). Security guard took a wobbler, then got confused, then took me down to the gate with it and thrust it into the guys hands who was checking tickets for boarding and left muttering something about it was a danger, etc. etc.

The boarding guy just looked at it, shook his head and gave it to me to take on board.

You takes you chances. Don’t be surprised if it gets taken off you (it should shine like a beacon through x-ray).

0% offers get cleared off first, that’s the magic trap on c/cards. You might think you spent £200 this month and paid £200 off you interest earning total (i.e paid off in full) but you didn’t touch the £200 that gets hit with 18% APR, but took £200 off you 0% balance.

To be honest, I’d say eventually they’ll realise. Then they’ll ask you for, say, £500. You kick up a fuss, complain to the finance section of Daily Mail, blah blah, they’ll say, okay, just give us £200.

Cycle fitting? Probably a decent outlay on one of those fancy adjustable frames thingies but £25 for a fit.

peterfile has a decent idea – fitting charge for bought in bits that people buy but don’t know hwo to actually fit, or haven’t got tools for.
