mee old man used to stick a couple of broom shafts into the runners of our garage door. Certainly a cheap way…

You’d be lucky to increase the limit to £3k let alone £35k! Especially as you only use the card once or twice a year.

There’s only a certain amount they’ll jump up to, speaking from my experience trying to raise the limit on mine to cover a new kitchen.

On a particularly boring night shift one we ended up playing indoor cricket. A magnificent hok shot looped over and landed squarely on the emergency shutdown button for the mainframe…

I love the quote on the BBC website about the Ghostbusters film

Plans for a follow-up have been mooted ever since, but appeared to have been scuppered by Murray’s reluctance to sign up for it.

Harold Ramis’s death last year appeared to make it an even unlikelier prospect.

I’d kinda say impossible, seeing as he’s dead!

Some of the Karndean stuff gets expensive very quickly.

Don’t forget you’ll need a decent base – plywood or scree underneath which addd to cost.

Theres another company called Polyflor (that used to do shops and now getting into domestic market) which is basically the same stuff, just cheaper (think the brand names are Camaro and Colonia) – a more limited range of wood effects but better prices.

Respect to the guy I was following last week – had a nice shiney rear light.

Alas, the long (black) trench coat he was wearing that completely covered it made it a bit pointless…

10 day ones are perfect if you’re selling something that people might want to view in person before bidding.

Actually, yes thats a good point – I do forget eBay sells much more than the bike tat I flog on it (and buy off it 😀 )

I know the architect who did our house very well. He is saying so many people are doing up their houses rather than moving that all the builders he trusts are snowed under with jobs and are basically charging what they like.

But conversely knowing you’ve got £60k in the bank that will cover your £50k mortgage at any point in time is a pretty good feeling too.

And knowing you could get that new boiler, or car if required without actually having a job might be a good feeling too…

See, I think the ten days auctions are a bit of a waste – why bid on something in ten days when you might get the one thats up in seven.

The bidding action never happens until 10 seconds before the end, you just need to tempt the punters watching/bidding on your auction.

But Sundays finishing at 20:00 for the win.

with today’s mobile technology does it really matter

Doesn’t matter if on mobile or desktop – you need the buyers to not be having dinner/sleep/sorting kids out.

I imagine they couldnt be arsed with getting a present, wanted to offload their spawn on the grandparents. Great though they are kids LOVE going to parties.

Or maybe the terminally-ill grandparents have come over from Australia and it’s the last time they’ll meet their grandson who adores them (and he hates the annoying kid whose party he’s been invited too)? 😉

Don’t forget to add all the costs up, like getting to/from the random airports.

I’d thought I’d found a cracking deal for my folks last year from the local airport, but oh no, a ‘friend’ of my old mans found something a few quid cheaper. Turns out instead of me dropping them off at the airport 20 minutes away, they had to drive 3 hours there and back, and pay airport parking for the week 🙄 which did make a mockery of the £30 saved…

I’m still puzzled though. Surely she’d be out of pocket if the kid came or not, unless of course the kid was supposed to pay for the skiing and she had to instead.

Not defending her in any way, but it does appear offending child was doubled booked in advance so maybe if they’d bother so say “we’re at grannies that day” beforehand she could have let the ski centre know – usually you’d get the money back for poor johnny if you give them notice.

tbh, I think most parents do a little ‘cost per party place v value of present received calculation’ and reckon to break even on most younger kids parties (not sure the £16 skiing one would meet this rule though)

My mate in Singapore has just come out of a kids party where there were iPods in the party bags 8O… I move in somewhat less rich circles – a bouncy ball, a couple of refreshers and screamer balloon and that’s your lot.

To be honest, the perfect girl for most of the STW forumites would appear to be that woman who sent on £16 invoice for non-attendance to a kid who didn’t turn up her sons birthday party…

I’ve been near to breaking the 30 minute barrier for my commute for a while, managed it this morning, 28.17!

Won’t be quite as fast on the way home somehow!

I’m the opposite of you – it’s gonna be a quick one on the way home soon…

I think cadence is a more important thing in road cycling – the 1×10 block might have the same range of gears but you’d have some pretty big jumps between the gears that aren’t really a worry on the trails (especially if the trails are coming alive…).

Out on the road I just want to drop one cog (for a gradient, into the wind etc.) and try and keep the same kinda cadence, so I think a narrower range block and a double chainset wil be around for a while yet.

I was watching that BBC2 dieting program last night, interesting stuff but kinda spoilt by one guy saying he couldn’t find time to do some exercise everyday.

So they strapped him up to a bike for 20 mins (or something like that, might have been 30) to measure how many calories he burnt.

Then tried to recreate it using ‘everyday’ things like
    – shopping. Scientific shocker – apparently the heavier your basket the more calories you burn 🙄
    – walking a couple of tube stops
    – talking on the phone for 30 mins
    – erm, walking up stairs for 5 mins

All that actually added up to more than cycling. which is great, but though what they kinda glossed over was the guy would have to find over an hour to fit all this in rather than shorter cycling. Not really sure what they had proven with this in-depth study.

Not sure about comments re boot space – ours is an inch longer than the golf but way bigger boot space – road bikes in with wheels attached, etc.

Petrol is fairly wheezy but will chug along at 70 – for short commutes don’t bother with a diesel.

In snow, with winter tyres the 2wd has driven where an awful lot of other cars haven’t managed.

The rear boot lock is rattling in ours, just a slight inconveience and not worth the mental money they quoted for replacement.

Stops, starts and has been reliable in the 7 years we’ve had it – it’s a workhorse – tip runs, bike in back, IKEA visits. Plus it helped we knew someone at the factory so mahoosive discount. Sits around a lot as cycle in so low mileage so can’t really comment on any woes for big milers.

Think it’s one of those cars people like to get superior about (especially people who ‘know nothing about cars but ‘know’ a Quash is rubbish’….). Never gonna win any prizes for looks, brand quality etc. but, touch wood, not let us down so far. Not in desperate hurry to get rid of it.

Shimano M424, or maybe the T400 version as it’s got reflectors built in for the commute?

I’m probably going to end up soon with some Oakley Crosslink Switch glasses – you get two sets of ‘frames’ to mount the lenses in and whilst they’re obviously not frameless they haven’t got the thick frames my old Jawbones had which I didn’t link (got in the way looking over my shoulder for cars whilst commuting).

Then any optician can fit the lenses or Ciliary Blue can do them for pennies, at their prices it’d almost be a consumable item.

Stumpy – thanks for that but as yet she has no transport.

If she’s at either of the Uni’s in Newcastle then she’s bang in the town centre so transport really shouldn’t be a problem.

Used a couple of That Cable ones – their stuff seems pretty good and actually good value, as opposed to the above mickey take.

I cut a split in all my crown races. Never have a problem in many moons.

Just try and make a nice clean cut and tidy up the edges a bit with a little file.

FSA have split races anyway normally so whilst in theory there is now a tiny space to crud/water to get in, a bit of grease in there usually would resolve that anyway.

Malcolm Steward has offered to teach how to build a good sounding NAS drive. to be published in the next issue ………

And so we get to the point.

pdV6 – can’t remember where I saw it (might have been teletext) – one of the database companies (might have been Immobilise) have just fixed a flaw in their website that apprently would allow people to access other peoples details.

I’d struggle to see past that £65 quid Seiko Chronograph on Creation Watches. Pal has one and it’s looks an expensive watch on.

    Maybe a nice Strela?

I think you’re first port of call should be CRC as they sold you it, though to be fair they’d prbably just pass you across to the legendary Hope service team.

Hope will sort you out, I’ve used them a worryingly large number of times including fractured flange on a hub around the spoke holes and a completely split freehub body. Not 100% sure I’d recommend their products now but always sorted stuff for me.

Canon for the win – mine just warns me it thinks the ink has run out but will happily keep printing with it until it actually does run out months later.

Unlike the previous Epson which won’t print once it thinks a cartridge is empty, including not printing a simple black and white letter if, say, the cyan is on it’s last legs (or half full to normal people…).

I suspect any cost ‘savings’ are based on said mother and child not clogging up a hospital bed after the birth, rather than costs at the actual moment of head popping out.

The only tip the midwife gave us if we were considering a water birth (we didn’t as it happened, thankfully similar sorry to others as intervention was required) was if you’re going to ‘pop’ into the tank with her then keep your trunks on.

Apparently one guy got a bit carried away with the moment and removed a few too many garments and realised afterwards he was standing slightly awkwardly in a water pool with nowt on…

The Muso is certainly getting rave reviews from everywhere, though I’ve not heard it yet. Though it should at £895…

I think there were a lot of complaints on the Naim forums about the app basically dumping all the old Uniti users in the proverbial which worried me slightly that the app support might be limited once the ‘next big thing’ comes along.

Don’t worry about it – if you’e seeing £5k as a bit, then another bidder must have bid £4900 so somethings a foot.
