Ahh…The Day Today, I found my DVD of that recently along with Brass Eye and Nathan Barley.

My new house mate loves it, I feel a Chris Morris theme day coming on.

Skateboard wheel size seems cyclical in fashion.

I remember in the early 90’s when everything was ultra-tech and it was all about rolling up to a kerb on 42mm wheels at 2mph and switch double flipping whilst hoping you didn’t trip over your marquee proportioned New Deal jeans.

By the time the late 90’s came around I was riding 56mm and people generally rode bigger wheels as tech was out and everyone wanted to be Jamie Thomas.

The local independent record shop of my youth was Stand Out in Salisbury.

I briefly lived near Salisbury after finishing my A-Levels (’94ish) … Stand Out helped keep me sane.
    UNQUOTE.

You must be about 4/5 years older than me then (35/36?)…

In which case you may remember a little skateboard shop called Cunning Stunts?

Yes, Salisbury was and remains more than a little sleepy. Still, it seemed incredible compared to Andover.

As for White Lies, they’re a great band, but like Editors, We Are Scientists and an endless list of other great bands they’ll never break into the mainstream.

Would that be the same Editors who have enjoyed a string of Top 10 singles, seen two of their three albums hit No.1 in the UK album chart, sold approximately 2.5 million albums, had sold out tours in the UK and abroad and headlined festivals throughout Europe?

    We really have regressed musically.

20 years ago (well, 19 but whatever) PJ Harvey was breaking through with some truly exciting music.

    Now? Ellie Goulding.

    Oh well.

There’s a fantastic record shop in Amsterdam contained within Independent Outlet – a combined skateboard shop, streetwear boutique and punk hangout, it’s well worth a visit.

Vancouver has one of my favourite record shops – Zulu…I watched Rocket From The Crypt in there one afternoon. There’s another one on the other side of the city called Skratch that was pretty good too.

I’ve never made it to San Francisco/Oakland, but want to in order to visit Amoeba which I am assured is the best record shop in the world.

The local independent record shop of my youth was Stand Out in Salisbury. They sold an extensive range of punk/hardcore along with much else besides, many happy memories connected to that place.
Naturally, it closed a few years ago. They had a branch in Bournemouth too briefly, but sky high rental put paid to that.

Ear Wax Records in Andover was my nearest real record shop and a great alternative to Our Price (the only other option until local chain Falcon opened near by before turning into an MVC and then closing entirely). Ear Wax was about the size of my bedroom, I recall buying albums by the likes of Buffalo Tom, Senseless Things, Drive Like Jehu, AC ACoustics and Truman’s Water in there.

Now that Essential has gone, Bournemouth has no independent record shops other than dance music specialists. We have two branches of HMV, both of them pretty poorly stocked and with HMV’s downsizing I suppose one will shut.

Brighton really bucks the trend though…Rounder and Resident are both fantastic independents, Ape is pretty decent too and then there’s punk and hardcore specialist Punker Bunker too.

Out of Step (punk/hardcore) in Leeds appears to have closed, not sure whether Crash and Jumbo are still going.

Another mention for the excellent Rough Trade East is surely deserved along with All Ages in Camden (another punk/hardcore specialist).

I’ve got fond memories of Radio 1 in the early 90’s, I used to listen to it whilst doing my homework. Lamacq and Whiley were hosting the Evening Session back then and I was introduced to such audio delights as PWEI and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin.

It’s still quite good in the evenings sometimes, but I miss John Peel…then again, at 31 I’m outside the target demographic now.
They used to have some comedy shows too, does anyone remember Simon Munnery’s ‘Alan Parker – Urban Warrior’ character? I seem to recall a couple of series of that and Chris Morris showcased ‘Blue Jam’ on there too.

What I really miss though is XFM, back in the days when they were broadcasting on temporary test licences (92′-95′?). You used to get the likes of Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Shudder to Think and New Kingdom…and that was during the breakfast show! It was the closest we’ve ever come to US style college radio.

so they are going to loose their jobs soon and you wonder why they are not overly comitted to the organisation.

That’s an interesting deliberate misreading of my post.

They’re having to reapply/reinterview for their jobs (as I and others have this year and last), those who have proven to be lazy and unreliable are more likely to get P45s than their harder working counterparts.

    Reasonable, no?

Ask them what they like about the company and (assuming the job is in the private sector) what they feel sets them apart from their competitors.

They’re reapplying for their jobs next year and at this rate a few of them are going to get austerity measured right up.

Not everyone born and bred in Bristol has a typically Bristolian accent though.

I live in Bournemouth, you’ll find a mixture of West Country, Saaaaaaaarf Coast and Oxford English RP here, all spoken by people who grew up in the town.

    You what?

It’s a far safer bet than the UK.

They have oil, gas and water in abundance. They still make things, they have a can-do culture of the sort that has long since disappeared here and more importantly, they have room to expand.

Never you mind about the mountain bikes (or surfboards or snowboards), these halfwits clearly aren’t au fair with skateboarding culture either!

All of this size of population as core criteria for external fame is way off though. There are cities of 5-10 million in China that you’ve never heard of. Santa Cruz punches way above it’s weight due to numerous references in pop culture. Obviously, American pop culture forms the bulk of Western pop culture and California is the dominant force within American pop culture.

Any British adult that struggles with that answer is on the thick side.

Austin, Texas – Really nice city, had all of the good things about Texas whilst socially liberal and little of the overt bible bashing that is prevalent in other parts of the state.

San Francisco, California – The Brighton of America! Skateboarding, punk rock, anything goes cosmopolitan free for all. Quite expensive, but you can live just across the bay in Oakland for a fair whack less.

Portland, Oregon – Cheap to live, beautiful scenery, indie rock central, good beer (micro-brewery capial of the US).

I used to visit Seattle, Washington a lot whilst I was living in Vancouver. I quite liked that too, but not as much as the other cities I mentioned.

I’d give the Mid West a miss really with the possible exception of Chicago. New York and LA are a little too hectic for my liking too. Boston is quite an interesting city and there’s a real sense of history there, but, the East Coast urban sprawl does nothing for me.

To me, my own personal little ‘American dream’ involves the West Coast, cowboy country or the untamed wilds of the Pacific North West.

Find me the list of permitted weapons that UK police carry/can use

Well, the Civil Nuclear Constabulary are equipped with GPMG:

Just the once, but it was my first serious relationship (5 years) so I have no frame of reference.

I thought I was in love again last year, but she was far too secretive and unpredictable. I could never trust her enough to make that sort of declaration.

It was overwhelmingly love. That over rules everything.

    Life becomes exciting doesn’t it?

Munros, multi-day biking trips, art, music… ideas for the future….

I would give anything to have her love back again.

    Amen to that.

    What happened then?

    1 – We met

30 seconds before I ever knew she existed I stood up and said to my mate – I am going to meet my wife today (I was 21 and it was lunch time).

I was right, I did and we are still happily married although I am 20 years older.

I’m all for dating younger women, but she was 1 years old! 8O 8)

the MD on £200,000 can well afford 30%.

Now i am a left winger at heart so don’t take this the wrong way please but you cannot possibly say that.

    It’s all relative.

Well, I’m a Tory and I think it’d be reasonable.

Those on £15K can’t afford to lose a penny really, so the least that those on telephone number salaries can do is take a harder hit.
If they have to stop filling their moats with Evian, then so be it.

I also think that salary reductions should be proportionate to income.

If the receptionist is on £15,000, maybe deduct 5% if anything, the MD on £200,000 can well afford 30%.

Sadly, real life isn’t equitable like that.
