    I live in Bournemouth.

Some great suggestions on this thread already…

Chez Fred is quite possibly the best fish and chip restaurant in the South, Westbourne is a little bit of a trek from your hotel though.
Westbourne is also home to a fantastic Indian fusion restaurant called Indi’s and a vegetarian place called Zucchini which serves lovingly prepared and reasonably priced food that should even appeal to ardent carnivores.

West Beach and Urban Reef are both excellent restaurants too.

Sticking with Boscombe (your hotel is at the mid point between Boscombe and Bournemouth town centre, both can be walked within 10 minutes), there’s Urban Reef’s sister eatery, Urban Beach. It’s a boutique hotel with an excellent (and very lively) bar/restaurant downstairs.

Reef Encounter is next to Sorted surf shop, a little further down Sea Road (heading towards the Pier/seafront), great ribs and American food, friendly staff.

Koh Tapas is on the edge of Boscombe and you’ll walk past it if you walk there from your hotel. Great Thai place with a tapas format so you can mix and match dishes.

Back to the town centre, Tapas Plus is a lovely Spanish owned/run tapas restaurant. If you’re in The Square (heart of the town centre) you walk past another tapas restaurant (La Tasca, not very good – chain restaurant) and head towards the town hall to get there).

Just around the corner (base of Richmond Hill) is a lively little Mexican place called Sombrero (formerly Coriander), reasonably priced and attentive service, food not bad at all either.

Old Christchurch Road plays host to lots ofthe usual chains (Pizza Express, ASK etc) as well as a few decent indies like local chain Alcatraz.

Head towards the seafront/BIC and you’ll find 60 Million Postcards on Exeter Road. Arguably the best bar in town, some good food too. Nice and informal. Great steak restaurant, ‘Steak out’ just across the road from there along with a couple of Italian efforts and Funki Sushi which serves Greek food…okay, it serves sushi.

If you end up in Charminster at any point (15/20 minutes walk up Richmond Hill) there are a load more tapas restaurants, Baraca which is a superb Moroccan restaurant, a brilliant Italian (the name escapes me, but it’s part-owned by Harry Redknapp and has lots of football memorabilia in the windows) and another great Japanese joint called Nippon Inn…terrible pun, but it’s a good place. There’s also a Thai restaurant just down from there in what estate agents are calling Lower Charminster (but everyone else calls Five Ways), it’s called Tuk Tuk.

Okay, that’s all I can think of right now!

though i believe animal testing for medical research is essential

I agree. It’s the shampoo and lipstick testing that p1sses me off.
Of course the beagles love it; shiny hair and pouty lips. (JOKE)

…and all the fags they like!

I don’t agree with animal testing personally. Sometimes the bunnies can’t remember the answers and they get really anxious.

I used to eat at this vegetarian place in Boscombe. It turned out that they held fund raisers for ALF.

I’ll be furious if I’m on a no-fly list now, I only popped in for some falafel.

Oh, and knocked over a glass in a bar in Bleacker St.

I bet it was one of those contoured ones. They’re quite expensive.

Rosetta stone from less official channels

I was tempted, but you’re still talking a couple of hundred quid and there seem to be a lot of scams out there…the Latin American Spanish course getting sent to you despite ordering the Spanish Spanish one, incomplete sets, software that won’t load etc etc

Thanks for the Michel Thomas recommendation(s).

It seems to be the subject of universal praise and the basic/foundation course is half price on Amazon (and less than one tenth of Rosetta Stone!), purchase made.

    Muy bien etc etc!

I’ve been using a Finisterre Etobicoke.

They’re £90 at the minute (rather than £130) and really warm. I think I’ll use it under my Goretex shell when I go snowboarding too.

Has there been an STW film ever?

Portly chaps on Orange Fives (in 160mm AM configuration) riding to the Happy Shopper in full face helmets, whilst the bland musical stylings of Elbow meander away non-offensively in the background.

It’s a shame they don’t let you combine weight allowance with the person you’re travelling with anymore.

We used to get 2xdecks, bindings, boots and some outerwear into a Dakine High Roller.

Now we each take one. More weight, more space taken in the hold, but within the rules. It’s all quite silly.

I thought DH stood for downhill.

No wonder they banned me for asking whether they liked 8 inches in the front.

    It was no war crime.

The exclusion zone applied to neutral shipping only, not to enemy combatants. Indeed, the Argentinians didn’t even recognise it.

Some of their vessels had been skirting the periphery of it, popping in to mount an attack, then leaving in the mistaken belief that they wouldn’t be attacked, but that was their mistake.

As hard as these ultras seem to think they are, they never seem to put in an appearance on the away leg.

Either they can’t afford the flights or they’re just happier stabbing people in the bum on home soil and then legging it.

    Yes. It was grammatically incorrect.

All joking aside, we’re in serious danger of getting ‘lapped’ by other countries in terms of proficiency with our own language.

It’s not just India that’s producing hundreds of thousands of graduates per year with faultless spelling, punctuation and grammar. The likes of Germany, the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries seem to be able to educate their children, to a higher standard of English than the average Brit now.

    Just watched this one too:

    “Brazil: The Killables” –
Evan Williams travels to the resort of Recife in Brazil to investigate allegations that the police are involved in death squads that are murdering thousands of ‘undesirables’.

I think I’ll work my way through all of them over the next few weeks.

    Outstanding television.

All Hallow’s Eve actually began in the British Isles.

However, it took the Americans to turn it into a fiesta of petty vandalism at the hands of little brats buzzing off a Chupa Chups induced sugar rush.

Obviously, they also introduced the venerable tradition of top heavy girls dressing as slutty witches too, so it’s not all bad.

I’m not sure what kind of tight selfish friends you lot have, but…if I broke a friend’s property, I’d pay for a replacement immediately.

    How so?

well most comments have been quite reasoned for or against the americans, apart from bravotel who declared anyone who doesnt adhere to his blinkered views was a cock

The only ‘view’ that I expressed was that this troll thread was attracting kneejerk anti-Americanism from the usual suspects.

Is objecting to kneejerk anti-Americanism blinkered, then?

Yes, I described those who indulge in this as cocks. They are. Same goes for anyone who tries to lump a disparate group of people together as one homogenous group with shared character traits.

I guess you chose to forget this then…

I think the ‘Special’ in American Special Forces is possibly short for special needs.

and this ill informed bollocks about the ‘American psychi’ (sic)
…ahh, 300 million people who think as one, like The Borg.

    MSP – Member

I think the mistake the American military make is in trying to create a media image, in courting the media as they do they also highlight the mistakes. There may be something in the American psychi that causes that, an optimism that can cloud the possible negative outcomes.

and someone else bringing friendly fire into it for no apparent reason.
On that subject, the Americans have been responsible for more ‘blue on blues’ principally because they have many times more troops in theatre at any given point in addition to providing the vast majority of combat air support. Still, don’t let that stop the fun. All aboard the bandwagon, hey?

More kneejerk anti-Americanism from clueless morons.

    Grow up.

For any Americans that happen to be reading this thread, the majority of us are not like these cocks, who appear to have got lost on their way to the Guardian’s CiF site.

I was staying in the HI hostel in Banff, Canada and there was a girl from my office in Bournemouth staying in the same room.

Later that year I moved to Leeds. The first weekend I was there the sister of one of my housemates came to stay, it was that girl again.
