Urgh – “I want to take my cooking to the next level” WHat the hell does that mean?

    TJ’s got something to sell
    to the capital’s homeless
    at the Crossroads Hotel
    for the no-fixed-aboders

Where you can live life in style
you can sleep in a closet
and if you flash him a smile
he’ll take your teeth as deposit

    There’s bats in the belfry
    the windows are jammed
    the toilets ain’t healthy
and he don’t give a damn.

London is still the 4th best city in the South of England.

…actually, make that 5th best, I forgot about Bath.

    Mixed feelings about that film.

I liked the concept, but didn’t you think that the premise was cleverer than the film itself?

The first two thirds were very good, but then it seemed to descend into a traditional rom com format.

yep and during the strike a lot of current military put on police uniforms as an aid to the civil power.

No they didn’t, you ridiculous nutter.

bravohotel8er where do you get your confidence from? Using the army in support of the civil power was very common in the 70’s and 80’s including sending the SAS in to prison riots. For the Miner’s strike a number of welsh miners came to Yorkshire and found themselves opposite friends and relatives who they had last heard of as being in the army and now found in police uniforms.

Lots of ex-military used to join the police.

Move along son, there’s nothing to see here.

People with more money than you (and me!).

There are still loads of people out there doing well and lots of retired/semi-retired types who did well out of the property boom and are now enjoying their final salary pensions.

“At the miners strike, they had to draft in a bunch of hired thugs with no numbers (Army?).”

I’m pretty certain I remember a family friend who was one of the armed forces personnel drafted in..

I might be wrong though.. got a mind like a seive

    UNQUOTE.

    You’re totally correct.

    About being wrong that is.

No HMF personnel were drafted in, this has been a much a loved lefty conspiracy theory for years.

The closest thing to military involvement was the fact that some police officers kipped in TA drill halls.

BH8; Thats not Goodwins KB is involking,it is a play on Pastor Martin Niemoller

I know exactly what it is, it was a statement made in response to the failure of the German populace as a whole and the intelligentsia in particular to speak out before the Nazi movement reached critical mass.

Godwin’s Law has most certainly been invoked!

It’s taken an astonishing 5 pages before the invoking of Godwin’s Law, I’m truly impressed!

What a packet of poo. So, if you don’t agree with a protest then the police should be able to use unreasonable force and violence against protestors?

    Yeah, pretty much.

Anything that upsets professionally working class (as opposed to working class professionals) ultra-bores and cosseted middle class faux-anarchists is just fine by me.

It’s not as if they’re keeping you from getting to work, is it?

You only have to consider who the people that end up getting kettled are to realise that the police deserve our full support over kettling.

It’s not the compatibility that’ll hit you, it’s the lifestyle changes.

Since I switched to Apple, I’ve lost three stone, routinely team skintight Japanese selvedge denim with New Balance trainers and American Apparel zip-up hoodies, started listening to Animal Collective, decided that £4 isn’t entirely unreasonable for a fairtrade hazlenut latte, had my hair fashioned in an asymmetrical style, switched to a vegan diet, taken out a subscription to Wire magazine and begun fancying anaemic somewhat androgynous girls who look like they might be librarians.

I didn’t want to, I just woke up one day and it happened.

    On a tenuously related note…

My dad’s godson’s younger sister (are you following this? To make it simpler…my friend’s sister!) is married to Jeremy Edwards who remains best friends with Will Mellor…who by all accounts is a lovely lovely lovely man in real life!!!111!one11!

I’ll report on what his dentist’s best man’s receptionist is like in due course.

I have to say, I really enjoyed it!

Sure, it’s not razor sharp satire, but so what?

Very strong supporting cast too. It’s good to see that BBC Three can produce something of merit after the utter abomination that was Coming of Age.

My friend has just informed me that we have tickets to Weezer on July 7th!

I haven’t seen them since Reading 1996. They pulled out of an entire UK tour in summer 2001 and Reading the same year I believe.

Obviously, things went badly wrong after Maladroit, although the most recent album is said to be a partial return to form.

Worth it just for the Blue/Pinkerton content and a smattering of tracks from Green/Maladroit and Red though IMHO. I just try and pretend that Make Believe and Raditude had never been recorded.

If Death From Above 1979, Deftones, Jane’s Addiction, Jimmy Eat World and Henry Rollins were all performing on the same day I’d get a day ticket, but having seen them all between one and four times apiece I wouldn’t pay whatever the weekend tickets costs these days.

I went every year between 1994 and 2004, but I was starting ti feel pretty old by then and I was only 24, reckon I’d feel ancient now I’m 31!

Somebody mentioned 1995 further up the page…that was a great year.

Pavement, Buffalo Tom, Teenage Fanclub, Green Day (at the peak of their post-Dookie rise to fame), Smashing Pumpkins, Hole (with a frankly deranged Courtney Love and sexy new bassist Melissa Auf der Maur freshly recruited), dEUS, Foo Fighters in their second UK appearance, Neil Young, Soundgarden, Bjork, Mudhoney, Guided By Voices.

I think that was as good as the festival ever got for me…seem to recall weekend tickets were about £60 too, less than the cost of a day ticket now 😯

FFS, do the STW cyber-puritans ever take a day off?

You are full of cogent well reasoned arguments to defend your view aren’t you.

    What view?

Just a little lighthearted Friday morning ‘Look at what this sly old dog has been up to’ type fare. Bizarrely enough, it wasn’t intended as your call to arms to defend us all from moral turpitude.

I bet you’re a ‘wow’ at parties and no stranger to paying for it either! Actually, I refuse to believe that anyone has ever permitted you to violate them without significant remuneration, you boring git.

Like if some people in Northern Ireland decided that the use of terrorism was ok and say for example, Libya was to fund it.

    Which actually happened, of course.

So did our great pals in the US…before they got a taste of the rough stuff on their home turf, obviously.
