I’m in Bristol. I used to commute down the A38 but the buses, lorries, vans, cars, motorbikes and other cyclists kept getting in my way. Not to mention the 31 sets of traffic lights and assorted pedestrian crossings in a 3 mile journey.

I now use side streets and bike paths. My journey is all together more pleasant and not at all stressful.

They’ve been hammered at Afan without issue. They are laterally stiff but seem to soak up the bumps.

I would avoid the Havens as they have proprietary spokes, and a reputation for a dodgy rear axle preload. I built a set of the LB rims onto DT240 hubs. With Stan’s tape and valve, they were easy to set up tubeless. A light set of wheels which ride so different to any alloy-rimmed wheel I’ve tried. For value for money though, you can’t go wrong with the STW Standard Pro2/Stan’s build.

My recently ordered Van Nic Ti post is oversized. So much so that it will not fit in my Van Nic frame!

I bought Ice Spikers so I could ride my bike in the snow and ice. Alas, I didn’t consider the fact that I now have no excuse to stay at home when it’s icy.

I was only really ever a red run skier with occasional black runs. Moved to a board in 2005 and haven’t been back. I found it easier to pick up than skiing, albeit initally painful! Comfortable kit, especially some armoured shorts with tailbone protection, is a must.
