To the chaps recommending carbon rims and building a wheel yourself. How tricky is it to build a with the carbon rims? Suitable for a first timer wheel build or practice on something old first?

It’s no more or less difficult than building with alloy rims. And I third the light-bicycle carbon rims. I have them built on DT 240s hubs and I’m rather pleased with their performance.

Smear some neat washing-up liquid around the bead, put 60-70 psi in the tubes, and the tyres should snap into place.

My mate took a Dremel to the post mount on his Fox 36 in order to use a floating rotor…the alternative, which would be my preference, is to use a normal rotor.

Edit: I also had this when running a floating rotor on a centre lock adaptor. The alloy carrier for the rotor is too thick. Going to normal rotors solved it.

Yes. In fact, you can pull it all of the way out once the axle is removed. Twist it anti-clockwise as you pull the driveshell.

I think UV light accelerates the breakdown of rubber so storing them in the dark might help?

I don’t bother with UST tyres anymore – too damned heavy! Tubeless-ready does just fine. I do use sealant though which adds weight, but I also used it with UST.

I’ve not broken a carbon frame. That might be because I’ve never owned one. The same cannot be said for steel, aluminium or titanium.
