I’m liking the idea of a curved TT so pretty much rules out 853 there too so it only leaves the DT & ST 853…

853 rear is too stiff – something like 631 will give a better compliant ride

Don’t fret it too much it’s the way it’s put together which is more important

Someone told me Aqua’s frame weighs 9lb too?

I’m going custom steel build from a local frame builder.

Designed around the Reba Team Maxle @ 120mm, which for me is all the fork I need (my WB 135 is up for sale  ), slacked out, short CS’s, curved TT…

The Wolfhound is a gorgeous looker for sure, but is £2K 8O

    This custom 853 is £400

Yup, looks like CRC have them – I was trying to wait going to the most expensive place till last

Looks like I might have to bite the bullet

Could RS be going for the U-Turn version as the new ‘standard’?

If I had the WTB on the back, Id consider turning it around since I ride SS.

Im toying with RR – what are they like?

As it is I have enough tyres to last until the rapture!

RR’s are overall a very good tyre. The best part is their rolling speed is faster than a whores draws on speed. Their side walls are very fragile, and the reason I’m finally moving on is their poor braking traction

Well worth a try though and i think there’s a snake skin version out

I think I dropped a “ton” to get one from dutchman*

*You see what I did there?

I built mine into a superstarcomponents 20mm hub – despite all the shit bits of SSC Ive had, this is a great bit of kit. I got it for a bargin £15 and for an extra £7 you get the QR cups as well. So I move this wheel between my Reba 20mm bolt-thru and On-One QR rigids. WOrks a treat.
Was out on it today with the WTB Werewolf 2.55″ LT. Makes a great front end, but a bit hefty (about 1.6Kg)

A bling front end you have there sir – nice!

I’ve had a Wierwolf arrive today – was going to try it in the rear to replace a RR, but perhaps I should try it up front?

I had a Sultan out on test a couple of weeks ago.

    Very nice it was too.

Hey Stu, you kept that quiet :D – was that the DW – and where from????

Very well explained – the problem is made alot worse with 29er’s and long forks, as I found.

CK do say though the o ring needs anual replacement, but still it’s the design which needs improving.

The Hope does have the split compression ring in the steerer tube which is very good, and alot better than the King

Not sure if we’re particularly expert, we just try and weave the best snakes ‘n’ ladders together we can

Drop a PM to Mick or myself and we’ll put you on our emailing list so you’ll hear about the next ride

Jim – I’m a Clent regular (day/night rides) if you need a show around

Mick – I’m going to try for a 7PM meet tom if it’s Clent

If you will be using a long travel fork then go Hope. CK might start to creak…

I phoned around quite a few builders, both here and in the US and the one I made best/easiest contact with was Justin Burls.

All the others either away on holiday, didn’t return messages, emails, or did not do custom builds, or were too expensive – which is most of the US frame builders.

The Wolfhound (US) looks brilliant but would work out to close on £2K – for a steel frame!

So, Burls has supplied a few ti 29er’s although his main thing now is ti road frames, all made in Russia.

Here is a drawing he has made

Since then I am leaning to the side of steel as I think this might be the the material with the most compliance and alive feel – more soul

I have found a local frame builder looking into a similar full Reynolds 853 design…

I’ve got to say, if I was doing it over I would just go Reba Team Maxle – excellent fork and really all the fork I’ll ever need for a 29er

The WB has been back to MBTec twice for repairs. Going well at the moment though

    Oh dear

Brant was the guy I thought of, he’s working on just the HT geo I’m looking at, but I don’t think he does custom sizing

Quite a few out there who will do ti to whatever spec you ask for. Designers who will CAD them up and then get them built in either Russia or China

Hoping to have a very limited run of Pegasus available before the end of the year, last round of prototypes coming shortly then will be making an order – by all means drop me a line.

Thanks for the reply – I thought you were just a steel frame man (only from looking at your website), but will certainly bear you in mind, as my ti lust has been awakened now, and I like your frames

Panic over I have to say – cured with a cockpit adjustment :D

It’s been ~4 months since I have ridden my HT Niner and throwing a leg over it after riding a smaller bike made it feel too big.

Shorter stem, straight seat post, 2 hour ride and I’m feeling the love again. In fact the best ride I’ve had for ages – god, fancy thinking of selling that bike!

Thanks for the contributions, some good food for thought…

ton – here’s the Lenz thread in all its drawn out detail

Sam at Singular, yes, I’ll shoot him an email

    ‘Longer’ trunk, ‘shorter’ legs

    bonesetter
    Free Member

My long body and shorter legs mean that if I get a bike with the reach I need I don’t get the standover and the TT gets too high along with no seat post

The Lenz FS I have just bought was sized a size smaller on the ST with this in mind

The Lenz also has what must be considered slacker than most geo which I like: HTA 69.5 & STA of 73.8 which compares to say Niner’s and many others of 72. The Lenz is a FS and it’s a HT I’m looking at….? I need to find out how slacker geo would work on a 29r HT

This is why I want to go custom and the On-One way is stock only. I’m sure it’s a nice ride, and good value too

I think the most important thing is fit with a glove. Every glove suffers from failure and durability issues if the fit is wrong.

But, from what I’ve found, for buying gloves, this is the one time for sure to go down your LBS and try them on first, rather than e-buying

Curved trussed fork strangely doesn’t work with the curved seatstays, which themselves look very nice.

As always, a touch marmite. Some redeeming features, though, and an attempt to something more than 8 tubes in a double diamond.

I have to agree with the double curve not looking somehow right – a curve too much perhaps?

This one seems easier on the eye, the Stella I think it’s called

Why can’t ‘niche’ manufacturers make good looking ‘normal’ bikes instead of f*cked up sh*t tips like that thing?

There’s something about it I like, even it’s only because BS did the trussed fork first
